is it project car suicide?
If you have to ask, yes. Unless you gotta 3d printer, two or three scrap, parts car and or infinite money good luck
>>28884118Not unless you're looking for something that looks good with moss all over it and 6ft plants all around it.
>>28884118>is it project car suicide? No, its murder. You're basically spending more money on a car than it ever could be worth. You're killing your wallet. Project cars are only "worth it" when theres sentimental value, or you're simply crazy in love with the car and will never sell it or trade it for anything else. Then again, thats true for fun second cars too. You're spending incredible money on basically nothing.
>>28884118Its not that bad but you gotta bear in mind 320hp/3800lbs was fucking fast in the 1990s and kinda mid in the 2020sAny turbo Subaru will handle better, and a turbo BMW will be just as unreliable but a lot faster. I personally wouldn't bother unless I really liked them. Even in the 2000s you were weird picking one over a lighter simpler DSM.
>>28884157why the fuck would anyone ever choose to drive a subaru though?
>>28884206They used to be cool. You used to have that unique engine growl. You used to be able to get them for fairly cheap, hop on COBB's website and spend a couple hundred bucks and get a noticable difference on your car. The AWD system was robust enough that the only thing you were likely to harm was your clutch. They looked japanese and different enough from every other soap bar on the road. You're not old enough to remember those days, are you?

>>28884118At their age they're not really daily drivers anymore, 90's was a long time ago and its only harder to keep them going as time goes on3si.org, 3sgto.org are full of technical and mechanical info, 3sx.com for partsNothing in them is particularly complicated by modern day standards but like anything from that era its also not usually the easiest to physically work on and if you don't like working on cars you're going to be shit out of luck.
>>28884238I let the results speak for themselves. I have touched every fastenerI have replaced every gasketI have very few oem parts nowAll I need left is a proper tune, but I've shelved this to prioritize another car but this is my favorite car of all time and I'll never sell it. It is overbuilt for 500awhp (after taxed hp) but will be set to 400awhp so the system is understrung rather than stressed.
>>28884118maintaining a mitsubishi is like swimming against a current and the 3000gt vr4 is one of their most complicated designs, it's not just project car suicide, it's project car kamikaze

>>28884249Very reductive of you, surely this isn't sour grapes and you'll be posting your own cool project right anon?I've upgraded the turbos, fuel system, standalone flashable chrome ecu, chrome maf sensor, Forged internals, performance heads, powder + cerakoted headers to help fight heat soak, upgraded the cooling system, went from 1g brakes to 2g, evo x MR bbs wheels, new sound system, short throw shifter, bushings galore, timing belt, tensioner, front and back Pitt Road M strut bars for chassis reinforcement, went with a performance gas strut and lowering springs to replace factory ECS, AC delete, steel lines everywhere, remote oil catch can, light weight flywheel, beefier full face clutch so it doesn't suck ass to drive in the real world, and a 2 piece billet transfer case to reliably put all that power down. Probably forgetting a bunch of shitWhat have you done to your car anon? Installed spikey lugnuts and an overpriced head unit?
Also OP, the more I thought about I'd say the hardest part of these cars is just working on the interior. The clips aren't the best.
>>28884260don't let em get to ya anon. this website and the internet in general has become filled with third world monkeys that get a taste of american life from social media which then fills them with a deep sense of resentment since it's completely out of reach for them, so they lash out like this any chance they get. no point in engaging with them, just let them wallow in their misery and keep doing what you're doing.
>>28884230I have a job and a family and no desire for a car to give me shit on top of all that.

>>28885229Ship of Three-sius.
>>28884441He won't. Just like anyone else whenever they're called out here.
Do people ever evo swap these? Theoretically could retain AWD, lighten the front end alot and get rid of the transverse v6 nightmare. Evo engines can easily make the same power or more.
>>28885408You could, but you're giving up a lot of torque and there would still be a small nightmare of re-engineering the front to make up brackets and probably custom axles all through it to reach the front hubs. Then someone will figure out that you need a new propshaft and diff ratios.Even my old 97 GTO gives an Evo-7 a pretty solid flogging by several car lengths in a straight up drag and it walks away from modern Subaru WRX's. Its not the fastest car I've ever owned or even a decent track-day distraction but its kept going solid for quite a long time.

The key aspects about them is their torque is fucking insane for the era, nearly 1:1 (320hp, 300ftlbtq) where you'll be lacking in torque with the 4G63. However for SL/Base model ones (fwd NA) they're perfect swaps because you dont have an awd system and turbo system to weigh you down. You can make a lot of power on a 6G for relatively cheaper than a 4G just because all the evo bros buy up the performance 4G bits so price goes up.>>28885412Yup, exactly.>>28885637Theres nothing wrong with the 6G72TT engine, even for a transverse motor they're pretty easy to work on and make power with the issue is 90% of the dudes who got these cars neglected them and because it's an interference motor if you get lack lackin you get sent packin. 4G63 if you have unlimited budget and are only chasing top speed6G72 if you don't have unlimited budget and want something better for canyon carving / day to day fun / twistiesI know its a meme now but I enjoy taking my car in the mountains and racing my ghost with a stop watch.
>>28884339>>28884260>>28884241>>28884230Pic of the cars interior too, which I did myself. Totally reversible, it's just a way to pseudo-protect the leather interior. One last fun fact is this car began its life as a 1g stealth twin turbo but I converted the front end and the rear end to a 1g 3000gt with japanese amber tail lights, 99' final year center garnish, and a 2g 3000gt rear bumper

>>28884157Ok but you're not really restoring these for speed or dyno. You're doing it for the soulful 90s japanese kino that is getting rarer and rarer. Took my 97 sohc to a car show with my buddy who took his 2014 s4, and I got way more compliments on my car and people taking photos. The cars from that era have so much SOVL that it's almost unbelievable. There will always be a faster car, but these are from a lost era, meant to be cherished and will reward you with smiles and piquing the interest of the next generation of car enthusiasts
>>28885668pic related is mine for reference
>>28885671Very nice evo x wheels, you have made your wheels nearly half as light thanks to those. While I agree there's always a bigger fish, these cars can genuinely boogie. Their handling is also quite nice, just a little loose. However a front 3 point strut brace and a 2 point rear strut brace dramatically transforms it for the better. You'd notice it too even with an SL (btw 97' was the 2nd rarest year, next to the fabled 99') The best years areFor 1gs: 1993, all the refinements still got the tech and the pop upsFor 2Gs: 1997, further refinements, less tech, 50-50 chance to get glass headlights Then of course 1999 for the final 3G year, which featured bigger bore oil lifters thst everyone puts in their older year cars.
>>28885493i have a car its just shit and i love ms wong

>>28885678I'm still not wrong; Subarus used to be cool and fun. Same way Mitsubishi used to be. And Dodge, and Mazda (sans miata), and Nissan, and and and. They all used to have good cheap fun cars. Now they're targeting median household incomes (of $120k) telling people who want a very fun $35k car to fuck off because not enough profit margin.
