Partial to GM trucks, and I would like the 8.1 since there is no replacement for displacement, and diesel engines have taken enough of my money. This is a third vehicle, not a daily or even a weekend vehicle, so gas mileage and running costs don't matter.

I am guessing the 8.1 GM or V10 Triton are my options, and I'm going to assume the V10 is cheaper to own and run since there are more parts and replacements. The 8.1 seems like a better engine though, and the transmission is much better on the GM trucks.

Just bought a V10 dodge.
Let's play some numbers.
How much money you have to bet against me?

The triton V10 is a piece of shit compared to the 8.1. The 8.1 and the Allison are hard to beat on a budget. Shit like spark plugs and coils are still cheap on the 8.1.
>>
>>28886366
Yeah. I'm thinking the 8.1 is worth it over the 6.0 for the transmission upgrade alone. The engine itself may not be as modable, but I'm not planning on doing mods to the truck.
>>
>>28886391
I got the 6.0/4L80/3.73 combo and probably wouldn't recommend it for towing anything more than a few thousand pound's. The 6.0 is definitely not a low end torque monster and 4 speeds suck. I'm sure 4.10's would make it a lot better but the 8.1/Allison would still be a lot better stock vs stock. If you were open to mods you could still mod a 4L80 to handle a lot more power than the A-1000. The same goes for the engine.
>>
>>28886411
Yeah. The mod ceiling is much higher on the 4L80 and 6.0 LS. Its just I don't want to mod shit if I don't have to. Not really chasing performance nor trying to dump tons of time and money into a truck that ultimately gets used to move shit around every once in a while.
>>
8.1 actually has an aftermarket. Raylar makes new heads, cams, intake, rods/pistons, lifters, headers (long and short tube), plug wires, stroker cranks, and supercharger kits. The 8.1 also shares enough with the LS that some of those parts are interchangeable (certain throttle bodies, ECUs, wiring harnesses off the top of my head)
6.8 Triton is a piece of shit, avoid it.

8100 + Allison is really the best. 3v v10 is ok, but it's only paired with the 5r110, it's reliable but not a step up from the 4l80/4r100. Id really take a 6.2 6r140 over the V10. The fords eat ignition coils and the 2v can blow plugs out, the gauge cluster is pretty inaccurate necessitating live data for any troubleshooting, but the 6.2 is on par with the 8100 for reliability. I had one and it didn't have a problem towing 20' enclosed trailers full of furniture at 85mph on the interstate

If I were in that boat I'd go 7.3 f-350, but I'm in the rust belt so the aluminum body counts for a lot in my mind. CCLB SRW, at least Lariat preferably higher trim.

If you can find an 8.1L paired to an Allison that’s in good shape, buy it. One of the most stout powertrains ever put into a pickup. Nobody mentions them when it comes to their unbeatable reliability is because they’re just so rare because GM hardly sold any.

Back in the early 00s, GM desperately wanted to gain marketshare in the exploding light duty diesel market, so they offered their dealers major incentives to move Duramax diesel units.

It’s why when you find an 8.1, it’s almost always a special order with other weird options, either for fleet or by some old fella who liked big blocks and disliked the smell of diesel. Dealers rarely 8.1s on the lot because if you were looking for the extra towing power over a 6.0, they wanted to sell you a Duramax to maximize their profits.

There are more 8.1's out there than you think. Keep in mind they weren't just pickup truck engines. They were used in motorhomes, box trucks and delivery trucks. They were also an option for the Suburban, Yukon XL and Avalanche 2500's. While super stout they still have their issues, oil burning being one of them. These burn a lot of it and that took out a lot of fleet engines as they ran themselves dry.

I want to try driving one but I don't know if I'd like the extra 300lbs over my LQ4. At that point you might as well just go with a diesel.

I paid $4k for this school bus. Its got 5.88 gears and will pull everything I own combined like it's not there. This one has big cummies, but you can get them with big blocks. Question is, are you cool enough to be a bus man?

>8.1L

You are trying to jump on a hype train that already left the station. Those things are way over priced right now, especially considering their age. Your only saving grace would be the USA (Israel fluffer) Iran war driving gas prices through the roof and you find them sub $2,000 like they were about 10 years ago.

Relatively decent. I paid $300 for a 6 month policy. Minimum liability, but this thing would total out for literally anything, so it's whatever.
>no room
This one is the shorter model of the full sized freightliner frame. It's only 31 feet from bumper to ball hitch. It still is big, but I park it in a standard half of a driveway at a duplex. I used to have a full sized pickup and its only a few feet longer. The skoolie crowd hasn't jacked up the price on the shorter ones yet because they don't have as much room inside for being a camper. I use mine to pull a travel trailer though, so I don't care about that, and it can't even tell it's back there. The v8 piggub struggled with the same 7k lb trailer, but this is like situation normal.
