unironically I've never seen this in an asian shop. You quickly build up trust, believe the guy when he brings things up, and they start throwing in tons of stuff for free like bulbs, small labor, filters, etc. Parts aren't cheap and people need to make a living. There's a major difference between a fair price to repair something labor intensive and having some teenager at a quick lube place claim your transmission is shot

Just plug an obd2 scanner and find out what's wrong with your car before you take it to the mechanic, do some research, learn what kind of work it would need and how intensive it is, etc
