I heard mechanics will rip you off if you look like you don't know anything about cars. Tell you your car needs parts replacing when they're actually working fine.

Is there something I can say to sound like I am an expert so they won't try it on me?

I am thinking of hiding my incel/neet vibes with a line like
>hey there, this old banger needs a checkup. she's served me good for the last few year but summing ain't right recently... reckon just an oil change will do the trick. care to take a look?

Any other words that will signal to the mechanic that I am a car guy?

yes, the best way to seem normal is to compulsively rehearse the things you say, it will always sound very natural and not strange at all
>>
Make some jokes about bangin' fat chicks. Excellent ice breaker.
Imo mechanics would sniff you out instantly if you try to bs them and you're probably better off just being a quiet neet. When someone looks at you as a neet, they don't see moneybags. I'm a neet. I do know about cars thankfully.

Okay what can I say to not sound like I have the tism? I don't even know what I would ask. "Hi my car is broken can you fix it?"
>>
>>28887858
Mornin, pretty quiet in here / the weather sure is something. Anyway my car is making this noise in these conditions. Or my car acts like x when y.
Sometimes I think even suggesting the correct thing to look at pisses them off more than impresses them.
>>
>mechanics will rip you off if you look like you don't know anything about cars.
Pretty simple solution then, fix it yourself retard
>>
unironically I've never seen this in an asian shop. You quickly build up trust, believe the guy when he brings things up, and they start throwing in tons of stuff for free like bulbs, small labor, filters, etc.

Parts aren't cheap and people need to make a living. There's a major difference between a fair price to repair something labor intensive and having some teenager at a quick lube place claim your transmission is shot

Describe the symptoms and what/how, if anything, happened the few drives before where it felt like it was running together than usual
>>
>>28887863
that applies to literally anything. plumbers, electricians, builders. you can only fix everything yourself if you're unemployed.
>>
>>28887831
Look up a few chrisfix vids about the issue you are having, dont tell the mechanic you looked this up and just go in and say you suspect its something to do with xyz.

Just having the most base information about whats going on with your car will more or less warn off any fuckwits. Also you could just take your car to a mechanic in a smaller town or run by Asians. Asians will suffer the wrath of their ancestors spirits if they act dishonourably.

That depends. If you actually know what's wrong, and you're taking it to a shop just because you don't want to do the work yourself, you should be clear about what needs done. If you're just guessing about it (it won't start, someone online said it needs a new alternator or something?) that's probably annoying.

They'll know you're in there to get your car fixed lol
Just say hey what's up, I've got a Make/Model that's doing whatever weird shit

Not many Asian mechanics round here. Where do you live?
>>

I'm a leaf so lots in the greater toronto area

It's just a baby boomer myth.
Which is funny because they think everyone they interact with is trying to rip them off but will do anything some jeet scammer asks over the phone without suspicion
>>
>>28887853

This isnt a thing is it? People dont do this?
>>
>>28888482
Literally my 74 year old uncle.
>accuses kid at chistmas tree lot of putting the tree on his toe when measuring the tree
>also called a phone number to give his credit card number because a popup ad told him he had a virus and he was afraid of getting found out by his wife and daughter

In reality, if you don’t know them you really have to tread carefully not to bruise their delicate egos. You let them know what’s wrong and then make a suggestion on what it could be but I dont press it or they think I think I know more than them. Which is exactly what I’m trying to figure out. If I know more than a mechanic then I am not using that mexhanic.

lots of chronic overthinkers in the world
especially with all the autism in here
>>
>>28887895
no? do your shit break constantly?
>>
Just plug an obd2 scanner and find out what's wrong with your car before you take it to the mechanic, do some research, learn what kind of work it would need and how intensive it is, etc
>>
>>28887831
What is best is to be able to describe the symptoms of your car problem in autistic detail.
>My car is due for a service, but it's also making an odd noise. When I turn left it goes swoosh-swoosh, but if I'm braking as well the noise is much louder. It sounds like it's coming from the front right. Can you have a look at that? Also when I start it it squeels from the engine for a few seconds, etc.
>>
>>28887831
going to a mechanic is all the proof they need that you know nothing about cars
>>
>>28888625
this honestly. especially if it's something like an old german. nothing wrong with having mechanics repair everything on a normie a to b car like a corolla but not diy'ing an old bmw yourself? you deserve to be scammed.
>>
>>28888482
It's not. A friend got charged for an adjustment of the hydraulic tappets once. Too bad that his car didn't even have these. It was "a misunderstanding" and got cleared up, but they probably do this to all of their customers. And how many percent of them would even know a detail like this about their engine?
>>
>>28888817
Meant that he had hydraulic valves and they tried to charge him for an adjustment.

It's actually insane seeing autistic bubbles like this on the internet.
BMW and other Germans sell a combined 10,000,000+ cars every year. There's literally one on every road in the world. The VAST majority of these people just bought one to drive and can do basic maintenance at most. And here we are, spergs thinking "if you can't repair everything yourself you are an idiot and deserve to be scammed".
Not to mention if you're getting a government mandated test you have to take it to a garage even if you're the world's best mechanic yourself.
>>
>>28888828
Third party state verification isn't a issue, being a helpless nu male is.
>>
Just don't go to a shop filled with brown people.
>>
>>28887831
You say stupid shit like that and you're meat on the fucking table, for them. You better have some idea what it might be, research it and say why you think that. Get a cheap code-checker, grab the codes and look them up. They might respect you enough to use lube when the bend you over.
>>
>>28888507
I refuse to believe that people don't do this. Every time I end up in a situation I haven't rehearsed for all the normies can tell literally instantly because I pause too long before responding.
