Looking to get my first enthusiast car and I'm between these two. Specifically I'm looking at the mk8 manual and fl5. Don't know how to drive stick and I'd be learning on whichever one of these I get. Which would /o/ recommend? I think the Type R is cooler but spending 15k less is pretty cool too.
>>28888601the R is what makes use of the DSG so if you're getting a stick and have no urgent use for AWD just get the GTIif you're looking for cheaper hatchback alternatives there is also the GR Corolla, also in manual and is reportedly more engaging to drive
>>28888617I meant the civic type r not the golf r lol. Probably should've clarified
>>28888601>>28888624There is a reason he thought you were talking about the Golf R - the GTI is not a Civic Type R (CTR) competitor. You are better off comparing the Civic Si to the GTI.So really, your question makes very little sense unless you decide on the price point. CTR smokes the GTI in every way, end of story. Golf R is faster than CTR in a straight line, but has a shittier interior and doesn't offer a manual iirc. Plus you have to own a vape and go on Reddit to buy one.But yea, if you have any questions, I own a CTR and can answer them. Based on what you told us so far, just get the GTI.
>>28888624the Type R is more of a comparison to the Golf R to give you an idea of the class it's inthe GTI has the practicality of the hatch and the softer suspension but the Type R just beats it across the board in the driver engagement and performance the Golfs are more mature but more mutedthe GR Corolla is still in the conversation as wellbut at the end of the day the best car for you is the one you enjoy driving the most so try and test drive all threeif you are too scared of looking incompetent stalling out in front of the sales reps odds are they know how to drive stick and will give you some pointers or drive it for you to give you driving impressions
>>28888624>>28888629the '22-'24 mk8 has the manualthey axed it with the 2025 8.5 refresh
>>28888629>>28888630I know the CTR is in a league above the GTI, I guess the question I'm asking is more of a financial one than an automotive one. What I mean to say is the 15k upcharge on the CTR actually worth it if it's mostly going to be a daily for me. I can afford both and neither are a stretch for me, I just don't know if it's 15k more of car if that makes sense
>>28888642if you're looking for a practical daily than GTI the CTR can be worth it if you want an engaging driver as a dailylike I said, give them both a test drive and see if the CTR feels like a good extra couple of grandif you're willing to spend CTR money you mind as well try out the Golf R too
Look at the Elantra N and WRX. GTi is only good if you want a automatic commuter (best interior, best automatic, most comfortable) CTR is awesome but $50k is a lot of money.WRX is better as a all around car especially if you live in a cold/winter state (4WD is a game changer...all the FWD cars can't hook for shit when its below 40F so its just wheelspin/understeer) and its huge inside. Interior isn't as nice but that's one of the tradeoffs. Subaru has competitive financing/lease deals too, 0% for 72mo on any leftover 2025s for example and 3% for 60mo for 2026s. Elantra N is 90% of the CTR experience at 30% discount. Its good for a Hyundai product, honestly don't see them with too many issues (not worse than the Hondas really). You can get either for under $35k.
Elantra N or i30 N.
Why not an equivalent audi version?
>>28889003>Why not an equivalent audi version?and they haven't sold an A3 hatch in north america since 2018
>>28888637The Golf R used to seem so fucking legendary to me back in the day.>>28888642> I can afford both and neither are a stretch for me, I just don't know if it's 15k more of car if that makes senseAnyone sensible buying a 50k car can afford to buy a 150k car in cash, whether it's "worth it" depends on a 1000 factors though.Like, I am genuinely not sure what you are asking. The CTR is way more of a performance car, it's also way more expensive to maintain that a GTI or a Si, it needs two set of expensive tires - summer and A/S or winter, the summers would crack if driven in sub-zero C. Some maintenance is way more expensive, for example pads are 3x, etc. To me it made sense for one reason and one reason alone - the CTR is not going to depreciate NEARLY as much as the Si / GTI, so it's not a loss over lifetime, probably, or close.>>28888666Sup devil, desu I sometimes give sideways glances to the BRZ and the Z, even though they are both slow as shit. Muh RWD.>>28889003Not manual, expensive, depreciating was my take. RS3 is kind of a beast, but I still wouldn't feel comfortable with it and get a Supra or M2 if I had the money.Anyway, OP, I still don't have enough information to answer your question. Non-troll numbers - if you don't have 500k in savings ( yes, house equity counts) and don't make at least 120k, don't get a 50k car, full stop.
neither of those are enthusiast cars lil vro
Daily driver? WRX with a manual.
>>28888601I like my GTI but if you have type R money I would go that route
>>28889093Engines blow up. Soft suspension.>>28889087> didn't get CTR gap insurance> got gapped> mad
>>28889099>Engines blow upWeird, 11 years and mine hasn't blown up yet.
>>28888601Neither of fhem are enthusiast cars as they are literally just tarted up fag-wheel drive 4cylinderlet economy pikachu bullshitshatchbacks are the least practical body styleWhy just get an actually good car?Something like an E28 M5, E30 325i with a HUGE turbo, E31 85CSi, E36 M3 with subframe reinforcement, E39 530i with M-Sport suspension, E46 M3 with subframe reinforcement, LCI E90 M3 Competition, LCI F10 M5 Competition, a 965 Carrera RS, a 997 GT3RS 4.0, or a C5 or C6 Z06The Rs stand for rice, by the wayRicelet stancelet slowfaglet boyracelets don't @ me

>>28889111>Hatchbacks are the least practical body style
>>28889116hatchbacks ARE the least practical body style THOUGHEven my SPORTS COUPE could fit more cargo AND passengers than a fucking hatchback>inb4 noooo you don't understand I NEED to move a fucking washing machine EVERY DAY!!
>>28889116They really are. Coupes may not have the rear seat room, but they all have decently sized trunks, whereas a hatchback does not. Sedans have both good rear seat space and trunk space. Wagons are also great, but they're not performance cars - built for practicality first and foremost.
>>28888601FL5 looks like boring crap compared to the FK8. A Type R should look aggressive and a bit gaudy. That's the whole point of it. The FL5 looks like an Accord. Get the Golf R!
>>28889119>>28889125I can fit bulkier itemsWas never able to fit a fully assembled desk chair in my accordAnd my GTI is shorter than my accord while doing that
>>28889131>inb4 noooo you don't understand I NEED to move a fucking washing machine EVERY DAY!!I fit a fully assembled Herman Miller chair in my sedan *shrug nigmoji*
>>28889131Could you use the rear seats with that chair in the back, though?
>>28889135chopped asl. wrap is buttcheeks too
>>28889135I bet I could fit a washing machine in the back if I really needed toNever thought about that before. That's kinda coolI love my hatchback
>>28889137>ebonics>>28889138Just beause you like something doesn't make it goodThe reality of the situation is hatchbacks are ugly slow n gay as fuck and much less practical than their sedan counterparts
>>28889111>>28889114>>28889135>>28889142Can you form your thesis into a coherent statement that is less than two sentences? What car, specifically, are you recommending to someone who is looking for a NEW GTI or CTR?One, specific car, new, in that price range. Try to contain your autistic screeching, I know it's rough for you.
>>28889142Hot hatchbacks are literally Goldilocks carsComfy when your gf is in the passenger seat. Fun when you're alonePlenty of room for 4 of your mates but you fold down the rear seats and you have 1500L worth of spaceEnough power stock to put a bit of a smile on your face while being completely controllable for new driversMost are popular enough that the market is flooded with bolt on mods if you want even more powerAll this while being small enough for anxiety free city driving and 14kmplIf you can only own 1 car, the hot hatch is nearly perfect
>>28889145Why does it have to fit such homosexual criteria?new cars are pieces of shit with too many dealbreakersYou can get a BETTER car for LESS money if you get a GOOD used car, which I already recommended a HUGE list to go through>>28889150I can do all of those in a sedan THOUGH, and I wouldn't have to fold down the seats just to put a vaccuum cleaner in the trunk lol
Lease or buy?Lease: GTIt. 149€/month for my 8.5 GTI
>>28889164Iirc VW has a ton of lease promos so it may be worth it to lease to buy>>28889162How many times do you drive around with friends in the back and a vacuum in the trunk? Is it actually worth the extra length of the vehicle? Not for me. My trunk is clear other than a first aid kit and a roadside kit when I'm not actively hauling something
>>28889169Extra length? What the fuck are you talking about? How often do you transport ANYTHING that requires a hatch?
>>28889169yeah over here in krautland VW has crazy lease promos. shits so tempting no wonder every other car you see on our roads is a VW
>>28889172I don't live in the US so how big your car is actually matters>How often do you transport ANYTHING that requires a hatch?Often enough that not needing to buy an entirely new car to haul something is worth it
>>28889178Girl in picrel isn't in the US eitherI haul stuff all the time in my sedans and don't have to buy a new car to do so *shrug nigmoji*I've also driven halfway across the country, picked up four (4) other people AND their luggage from the airportI literally wouldn't have beem able to do that in a hatch and would have had to rent a car
>>28889187her face my ass
get a based vr6 golf
>>28889126Literally zero type Rs in the past have looked gaudy or overly riced compared to base model. If anything, they were just lighter, wider and with big performance changes in the drivetrain and suspension. I like the fk8 but it is ugly and all the fake ricer vents are retarded.
>>28889084I still think they are a pretty good value to performance ratio and a very good daily driver on top of it.$50k is high for a new one but only 2 or 3 years removed and they're closer to $40k for sub 40k miles which is decent. The warranty only being 4 years/50k miles not so good but so far they seem to be sturdy apart from the electrical gremlins of the first model year of the mk8, '22, and the classic plastic water pump.
>>28889301I have had 0 issues in a year and a half, but I also know you can smoke a sports car in a month if you are an idiot. I have driven a $1500 and a $3000 car for years, but I would not get used if you don't plan to rebuild it from scratch, which obviously isn't logical with a new car.If I went used, I would just get a boring daily or build something MUCH cheaper, like in the sub 10k range and do FI. Speaking of FI, you feel the fucking turbo lag on the CTR BAD if you are coming from lol-vtec.>>28889253They were also way lighter than the new pigfat CTR. I get back into my 2009 Si and miss it, definitely says something bad about the CTR.
>>28889119>>28889125Why lie? There's no coupe as practical as a basic hatchback.>durr... Bootspace? Got plenty plus I can put the rear seats down for more. I drive a 3 door clio.
>>28889333I'm not lyingI had a mirage rental and literally couldn't fit a vaccuum cleaner in the back without folding the back seats down, negating the entire back seating areaFits just fine in my cute little bluEee coupé
>>28889245Seconded. I'm picking my Golf R32 up next week. >>28888630Overall best and most reasonable post. I've test driven all sorts and this is one of the most important things to do after you've read a good amount on each car you're considering (more than just muh 0-60 numbers). I test drove a mk7 GTI TCR for example and that while nice, was not worth it when you can get an R for the same money with better odometer numbers. Personally when I'm in this looser stage of purchasing, I test drive dealer cars, and only test drive private seller cars if I'm nigh-sure I'm buying it anyway. The whole "Golfs are more muted/mature" is true across the board, and it's a big part of what I specifically like. Personally they're (for hatches) are the best for me, they're the most reasonable and balanced overall. But some people specifically want more flare or rice which is okay, but not for me. Pic' is a great example aesthetically of what I'm talking about. The only Jap cars I'd consider are old ones (90s). But for something more modern I find most cars to be pretty ugly in the realm of actually buying and owning one.
>>28888642>mostly going to be a daily for meYou sound like me, and I drive a GTI. I came from a car that felt excessive for something I was mostly driving to work and back with, even though running costs were no problem, but it still felt like the wrong fit for me. GTI fits me like a glove. Maybe it will for you too.
My stinger gt costs a fucking shitton to keep up and I want a real hatch for my dogs, do I put it towards a GTI/R instead?
>>28891710You need to give me more information. What's "a shitton to upkeep"? Like what are you paying for?CTR is still going to cost you in at least pads and tires. The Kia is also .5 faster to 60 than a CTR, but not the R.To me, it seems like a very lateral move unless you are having a ton of reliability issues with the GT.As far as the "hatch for the dogs" - never used it like that, your mom crawls in just fine though.
