E30 is a shit car anyway I don't understand the hype
It's just a larger ke70 corolla

It's nowhere near as good as an RWD corolla, especially in terms of reliability

Ever heard of Carl Benz?

rwd, good sounding I6, M20 takes boost very well, decent torque, 5sp manual, 2500-2700lb weight, good handling, a ton of aftermarket, look amazing inside and out, E30-E46 engines/transmissions are cross compatible, easily upgraded to LSD, decently easy to work on, and they're built decently well. Yeah they're a solid option.

I was gonna say that no person who has ever even looked at the specifications could call them comparable, much less assert that the E30 is just a larger Corolla. They're not even bench racing them based on magazine specifications; they're just wrong.

My 200,000 mile E30 had a lot of problems, but reliability was not one of them. That bitch was so damn dependable. I kinda miss it...

You can get a decently clean manual 325e for under $8k. You just have to be patient. You can have plenty of fun with that engine and it's fairly straight forward to swap in either a M20B25 or 24V (M5x or S5x) engine later.

Fucking hell, my '87 325is wasn't the cleanest, but I paid $3k for it in '08 and sold it to a friend for like $4k in '15.

95% of e30s are all a gutless little 90hp sohc 4cyl
Their suspension is archaic
Creaky rusty bodies
Just like a ke70 but heavier
>>
>>28889473
>95% of e30s are all a gutless little 90hp sohc 4cyl
Where do you live? In the U.S. the exact opposite is true and the majority were 325I or 325IS.

Not to mention the later twin cam fours.
>>
They mog on a corolla IF:
1) You get the 2.5L inline 6 this is the only engine I will abide. Even twin cam 4s are meh.
2) You swap out the steering rack for the Z3 one the stock rack is so fucking slow man.
A 4AGE swap modded KE70 vs 325i modded I can see being a contender, but the E30 is still better built

engine swap worthwile if idc about performance aside from mpg? are the common swaps even more efficient or cheaper to repair? should I decide to buy an e30 I plan to own it as long as possible, is it possible to recoup the cost of the swap from increased efficiency and cheaper parts/repairs long term?
>>28889279
what were the problems you encountered?
>>28889296
jelly
>>28889329
I often see manuals for much under 20k, I don't rly care about it being "clean" just not gonna fall apart I found a pretty decent listing, that is a "california car" and doesn't have much rust if any at all.
obvi they always say that but the guy seems pretty autistic about his records so looks legit
>>28889348
I see m50 swaps talked about alot, is it mainly a for fun swap? or viable looking at it purely pragmatically as well?
thank u all
>>
>>28889943
(also I recognize that caring about mpg and economics of a engine while talking about a 1 gorillion year old bmw is retarded in the first place)
>>
>>28889943
well the M5x engines are DOHC so they breathe better, whereas the M20B25 is SOHC, drop-in compatible and simpler. Rotating assemblies are cross compatible between all of them if you want to go to a 2.7, 2.8 or 3.0 stroker.

>what were the problems you encountered?
Rust, worn out suspension bushes, bodges from the previous owner(s), and oil leaks; all the staples of a cheap and neglected BMW, really, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. Also, it being a 318i made it absolutely gutless, but it was still quite fun to try and push to the limit, what with it's comically soft suspension and ridiculously tall steering rack ratio. They're stepping into "too much money for what you get on paper" territory now, and they need shitloads of aftermarket mods to make them in any way sporting, but I do still think they're great cars.
>>
>>28889943
I feel like M50 swaps are a meme unless you plan to turbocharged them as well ( even still M20 turbos are no joke )
the HP gain over a camed m20 is pretty low for the work needed imho

NVM GUYS IT GOT REPOSTED!!!
sent the dude a msg, it's 3400 ish for a 4 door (which I prefer for my usecase) 87' 325e, the body looks pretty much perfect, like legit no rust I can see.
did some research and it'd prob be somewhere 800-1400 to fix the stuff that needs fixing, you guys think its worth? the super nice body is really getting me hyped, and the majority of stuff that needs fixing isn't critical for the actual operation of the car, just nice to have stuff.
how much would a 87' 325e 4door go for all fixed up? thank u all <3
I WANT AN E30 SO BAD BROSSSSSSSSSS
>>
>>28893800
It is worth if you ask me
Here in Euroland where we had the 4 cyllinders be common you are lucky if you'd find the 318i for 4k instead of the 316i and 316(carbed)
>>
>>28889943
Replacing your M20 with an M50 is pretty straightforward, production years and emissions ratings overlap so it can be done in countries with some rules around swaps
Horsepower difference isn't too big if you start with a 325i (although the M20s usually don't quite reach their factory ratings while M50s and M52s are pretty strong here), but it makes a lot of sense for euros with 320i and 323i or burgers with a 325e
>>
>>28893841
Why fucking bother? The m20 is more than adequate for this shitbox. Just put a non-e head on it.
This wrenchlet is going to do neither anyway. I swear this board is fucking retarded about shit like this.

100% worth it, if that's what you want and it is what it seems to be. I wish you luck, bro.
>>
>>28893859
Because "e." Low-revving, low-compression variant of the M20. It's good for making a 327i, but if you're building an engine, you might as well stuff the rev-happy M50 or even S50 into that sumbitch.

>>
>>28893875
You've never done it. It's more than a head swap.
