You do downshift before you approach red light to increase engine braking effectiveness, right?
>>
Brakes are able to overpower tires and lock up the wheels.
Engine braking does not "increase braking effectiveness".
In fact its detrimental by causing imbalance between drive and non-drive wheels.
It also causes premature wear by reverse loading gears, bearings, synchros etc.

Now turn off the computer go do your homework before mommy gets home.

Notice how frog posters dropped to 1/10 after the new Captcha? Just saying.

>It also causes premature wear by reverse loading gears, bearings, synchros etc
Does driving in reverse also causes premature wear to your gears and shit you literal retard
>>
>>28889968
meh sometimes. i'll downshift all the way if i expect the light to turn green before i stop
>>
>>28889968
No because I'm not a try hard boyracer and brakes are cheap
>>
>>28890070
>It also causes premature wear by reverse loading gears, bearings, synchros etc.
this. the brakes are a wear item, the engine is not. never engine brake.
>>
Just took an hour drive, fresh on my mind.
I often seem to downshift 5th to 3rd, engine brake 3rd hoping for green, then brake in 3rd or put it in neutral and use the brakes.
Probably 70% of the time I just say fuck it and put it in neutral and brake.
Very occasionally I'll shift 5->3->2 for maximum boyracer. Didn't today.

>In fact its detrimental by causing imbalance between drive and non-drive wheels.
>His axles aren't equal-length with a centered driveshaft and diff.
Bummer.
>Increases wear
No shit, just driving the car causes wear. I've done this in 300+k mile turds and they're just fine.
There are few (if any) real reasons to engine brake in a straight line on the road, you're not reducing brake temp by engine braking. So what? Live a little, it's the simple things.
>>
>>28890170
>the engine is not a wear item
your whole car is a wear item and will be rusted away into dust in 100 years
>>
>>28889968
Of course. I wouldn't want to wear out a massively expensive set of brake pads. Much better to eat away at those disposable little synchros in the trans.
>>
>>28889968
>You do downshift before you approach red light to increase engine braking effectiveness, right?
No, I shift up and roll, timing it so I don't have to stop.

>>28890070
You're listening to myths:
>Engine braking does not "increase braking effectiveness".
When engine braking you get an increase in total braking force when the calipers are applying a set braking force. That is your effective increase.
>In fact its detrimental by causing imbalance between drive and non-drive wheels.
That same 'imbalance' is present during acceleration unless your knocking it in to neutral and braking from there. Most cars are designed with 'imbalanced' brakes to account for this.

>It also causes premature wear by reverse loading gears, bearings, synchros etc.
The wear is caused on the reverse side of the tooth, and thus inconsequential, you're still going to wear through the front side faster. The only time this would be a concern if if you plan to disassemble a transmission and reverse the gear orientation to squeeze some extra life out of it. At which point you likely have bigger issues.
>>
>>28890142
I hope you realize reverse doesn't work by spinning the same forward gears in reverse.

Podracing

On a motorcycle red lights simply mean 'give way'. You don't have to stop for red lights on a motorcycle.

And that's a phacked.

My pdk downshifts for me though.

Fucking develop some personality for christ sake.

I still think it should be a basic maths question on a short time limit that cancels if you tab out to filter out these fucking retards
>>
>>28892290
This except I already downshift but without releasing the clutcgy.
>>
No, I coast in whatever gear I'm in, then I ride the clutch a bit like a motherfucker and then I shift into neutral and break.

needlessly and several times, in an automatic even
>>
>>28889968
Get your fucking ass to the light and use your brakes you piece of shit.

You can if you want to.

Cool and all, but who asked?
