Tires start to feel sketchy at 4/32 tread. Dry sunny California conditions.

When I go over lane markings, I can feel the car get loose and slip around. So if I pull out to pass someone on a 2-lane, I nearly lose control.

All the stuff online says you can wait until 2/32 or 3/32 to replace, and you shouldn't lose dry grip at 4/32.

depends on the tire, obviously
feel will always change but a set of linglongs will feel different than ps cup 2s

Have you considered reducing throttle position when you lose traction?

Something is wrong with OPs car or its all psychological after he just checked his thread depth.

On a dry road, having less tire-tread is not going to make this worse, rather better actually. Tread is needed to remove water.
Either your tires are getting old and hard as fuck (the other reason why a tire might need to go) or theres another issue at hand.

I've noticed what OP's talking about, when the tread depth gets down to the last couple of 32's grip just goes to hell as if the tire is too hard. Somebody once said tires work-harden and that's the cause of the loss of grip. Don't know about that but I do know that when the tires are worn and don't perform like you want anymore, even though they're still "legal", just get new ones and be happy.

I think it's just a skill issue. I use my tires till they are bald.

They're probably aged then. Got them off a car made in 2023

I only drive rentalboxes so I can not feel bad. If I had a 100K Corvette I would suicide if a bird pooped on it

What tires? Some change compounds partway through the tread.
