Why were you tailgating a dump track? They make frequent stops and never get up to speed, the best thing is to hang back so you're not constantly braking and can look to overtake.

I had a chip just like that and fixed it with one of those repair kits
I think it was from rain-x
basically just thin super glue, some suction to pull the air bubbles out and it cures with UV light
it did last for a few years until I sold the car, and no one that looked at it when I sold it noticed what was left of the crack
for something like 10-20 bucks it was well worth not having to get a whole new windshield
