How do you decide whether it's worth keeping your old shitbox on the road versus just selling it and putting all that money into a newer car once the really expensive parts start wearing out? The cost of repairs can quickly exceed the value of the car, especially if you do it right and get new OEM parts which will last the longest, and with the wishy-washy state of emission regulation laws who knows how much longer you'll be allowed to drive it. On the other hand a newer used car might end up being a bigger money drain with more expensive things to break and an unknown history.
I go by sentimentality. If i love it too much and beyond affordability i basically turn it into it's own tombstone on my lawn.
There's no definitive answer to this.Love the car, won't be able to get better? Might wanna fix it.Aweful shitbox, 100% not going to remain functional? Might be better not to.The 'value' of the car only really matters when you're looking at prices worth months of pay, where it's clear your replacement wouldn't be just as clapped. If it is clapped, fixing it properly would at least mean that part won't fail again too soon.
>>28892090The most expensive part on a older vehicle is still less than one of your monthly payments on a new car. If you already have a bunch of money into the old car then you might as well keep it on the road for as long as possible as long as it's not about to rust in half. There's also going to be a point when you've replaced everything and it's almost a new vehicle at that point anyway.
>>28892090They don't make what I want anymore at all, so I will keep my old one forever.
>>28892090>The cost of repairs can quickly exceed the value of the carIf you ever take the cost of repairs into consideration you don't actually care about the car.
>>28892090>The cost of repairs can quickly exceed the value of the carBut after its repaired its now worth more.Especially in todays market where more and more people are looking for older vehicles without screens and tracking.
>>28892090>The cost of repairs can quickly exceed the value of the carSo?
>>28892161Ehh not always, there's a lot of shitboxes out there where the appeal is the price, like who's gonna pay 2x to 3x the price of the average old Honda Fit for one with all new parts?
>>28892090Repairing older cars is cheaper than financing and maintaining and repairing a new car.I do not care, I would rather put all my money in the devil I know than to adopt one I don't know. New cars blow, to hell with em. Worst comes to worst just throw a newer engine and transmission in the old car if you're truly at the end of the line of parts supply (you aren't, you're just lazy)
>>28892178It depends, old car maintenance can get pretty expensive pretty fast, moreso if you use brand new OEM parts. When you add up the cost of parts plus what'd you'd get if you were to just sell the car instead you can easily get in the tens of thousands of dollars even for random unassuming shitboxes and at that price bracket you start having options for significantly newer and hopefully less beat up cars, or even cheap new cars which will be under warranty for the first few years so even if they break you won't have to pay for it.
>>28892336>old car maintenance can get pretty expensive pretty fastI'll take expensive over parts starting to dry up, like one of my cars.
>>28892336Well first off don't own old shit with expensive OEM parts. OEM quality parts for my 20 year old SUV are dirt cheap. Even big ticket items like a fuel pump are $500 which isn't that bad considering you'll only have to change it once. If your shitbox needs tens of thousands in repairs then you obviously aren't getting the current market value for it so it's pointless to think of what it's worth.
>>28892149That's completely reckless thinking. You should always consider the cost of repairs so you can budget accordingly and plan for future maintenances. If you care you truly cared you'd plan for a future together.
>>28892428>You should always consider the cost of repairs so you can budget accordinglyNo. I will make it work without a plan regardless because I'm unreasonably attached to my shitbox.
>>28892172People don't fix expensive items on a Honda Fit just to sell it off immediately.
>>28892336>(new car) if they break you won't have to pay for itYou've already paid for it.
>>28892446>paid for itkek bro he probably financed it so he won't have it paid until 2028
>>28892438>I will make it work without a plan That's half-hearting it and you know it! Living in the moment only works until your luck runs out. Then what?
>>28892515Going with the flow is where it’s at. And that’s the dandy way to live.
>>28892532>the dandy way to live. The dandy way ends up with you broken down at a shitty truckstop keeping a stray cat company while you wait for a tow. If you're lucky you might be able to get some food with the pennies you have left, but there'll be no tobasco for those eggs...
>>28892090Does the maintenance on your shitbox cost more per year than a new car payment? No?Keep the shitboxIt's that simple
>>28892172A full suspension rebuild for a 2nd gen fit is like 550 bucks on rock auto. Controll arms with ball joints, struts, tie rods. Literally the only expensive part on that car is the cat if it's rusted out. Everything else is piss cheap. So to answer your question: who's gonna pay 2-3x market value for a used fit? A retard, a wrenchlet, or a combo of the two
>>28892584It is what it is. The cat might be a retard but at least he's there and the show must go on anyway.
If enough people stopped buying nucars then the manufacturers would have to stop making rolling subscription based spyboxes. If more people refused to purchase nucars and instead maintained older cars repair parts would be cheaper and more plentiful.>allowedYou get what you deserve. A man of principle will spend as much as necessary. It's about the message.
no fun driving a soulless car, and new cars being made all look identical. different grill, different OS on the repulsive ipad stuck in the cabin, but the underlying blob design is always the same. lame as fuck. what happened to style? self expression?wake me up whenever they come up with a new design.
>>28892336>so even if they break you won't have to pay for it.Broke wrenchlet goyslave take
