The urge to buy a YZ 250 is real.. talk me out of it, bros. I’ve had 250 2 strokes before, and every time I’ve concluded they’re too much power for me to fully enjoy. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love 2 strokes- the power and simplicity, but it’s just not practical.. Talk me into an old Suzuki DR, or a Yamaha TT or something I can enjoy on and off road.

way too slow for the street unless youre 5'3 120lbs. get a 500.
>>
why dont you jusdt get a 125cc?
>>
>>28892471
>way too slow for the street
Which bike are you referring to?
>>28892473
I’ve never ridden a 125, but I have this perception that a 250 is just an all round better bike (despite thinking it’s too much power to fully use).
>>
>>28892443
Dual sports are shit.
Sacrificing performance in both offroad and onroad to be able to do the either in a mediocre fashion.
>>
>>28892443
I thought that was Kramer.
>>
>>28892564
So would having a street legal 250 2 stroke be unironically more based?
>>
>>28892588
Same. Dubz Czeched.

I googled Kramer Suzuki trying to figure out in which episode he got a dirt bike with mangos on the back.

No.
Because race bikes suck dick on the street.
>Wrong tires.
>Foul the plug sitting at lights.
You might be able to power lights with the stock stator and modern LEDs.
But then theres that little snippet in my CR250R manual:
>replace piston and ring after 8 hours or 2 races

If you want to ride in the dirt, get a dirt bike.
If you want to ride on the street, get a street bike.

Now that you mention it, I think my CRF450r had something like that too. That’s why I got rid of it.
>If you want to ride in the dirt, get a dirt bike.
>If you want to ride on the street, get a street bike.
No like I get that, but I kinda want to do a little of both.
See I live near a lot of dirt roads in the a rural area. Initially I wanted an old 80’s Honda XL just to “putt” around on. But then I was like “you know, it’d also be cool to ride into town for when I need a few things here and there”.
So that’s why I’m looking at enduros. I’ve had dirt bikes, and I’ve had road bikes, Road bikes are cool, but I never ride mine anymore and I’m trying to get rid of it. As for dirt bikes- well I’d prefer to have a street legal one with not a lot of crazy power. I mean 250’s are cool, but as we’ve established, I forgot about the insane rebuild hours, and oil changes (assuming it’s a 4 stroke).

I can provide some input here having owned two Honda XR650R’s and 3 DR650’s

A proper racing dirt bike is a wonderful machine for its intended purpose. But that purpose hardly ever translates to being enjoyable to ride amongst traffic. It’s doable, don’t get me wrong. Previous owners upgraded the stator so I had lights and stuff. What got me in the end was the increased, more involved maintenance and the fact that it liked to sometimes just die at lights. Which is a pain in the ass since it was kick start only. This also goes for off roading it. I’m by no means a skilled off roader so I spent most of my time between 1st and 2nd gear, which if you’re in 1st, there is more heat generated than dissipated so you run the risk of pissing coolant. If you drop it, carb is flooded and now you’re kicking it over longer than what you want

I now have a 2024 DR650 that I got with 1400 miles. It’s not as hardcore. Suspension is bouncy, power not as exciting, but it’s infinitely more pleasurable to ride casually. Air cooled so basic maintenance is quick and easy. I’ve had it die on me at longer lights before, my guess is just the carb is a little gunked up from sitting for a while. Restarting it is as easy as pressing a button. The weight adds to stability at highway speeds. It’s just an under stressed, easy to ride bike, that’ll go anywhere eventually

I appreciate that information and explanation anon.
So essentially you’re saying that a 650 is better suited for road use because it’s more stable and it’s actually built for the road?

I’m glad you like it, Anon. It’s an amazing bike, and I’m going to use it until it explodes. Which will never happen, as it will outlive myself and every single person who reads this post,

Hahaha based way to look at it honestly. Now that you mention it, if it’s anything like the Honda forwheeler I had as a kid, you’re probably right.
How much did you buy it for?

I didn’t pay anything for it, but it’s probably worth $1500

You wouldn’t enjoy it if you’re the kind of person who needs a mechanic to keep your shit going, just saying.

>>28892808
Are you always having to do repairs?

No, but I am always doing preventative maintenance. Luckily most everything it needs I am able to do with a Leatherman, sometimes on the trail. It’s a 40 year old motorcycle that’s been dogged on damn near every day of its life. I’d say it’s got like a 10 to 1 ratio on riding and wrenching. So for every 10 hours I ride, I probably spend an hour going through it. Sometimes thats split up too, like i might spend 15 minutes checking stuff every 2 hours. Tightening bolts, checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc. a lot of oem parts are no longer available, so some stuff on it is just like, cheap Chinese universal shit I’ve had to make work, like the brake levers and reservoirs.
Luckily the important mechanical parts are still available because this bike was made for a very long time.

It’s fucking bad ass though. Kick start only, it’s had the same dead battery in it for 10 years, doesn’t even matter. These things were really built to last, and they have. The new stuff can’t hold a candle to it.

It literally just needs love. If you just want to beat the snot out of it until it’s in the dirt get a KLX300, or a DR-Z. I keep saying if my Yamaha ever blows up I’ll go out and find a pristine late model version of the XT350, but realistically, it’s never going to die lol

Unless you're a competitive rider it's so lame to care that much about performance. Dual sports may not be perfect but they're practical. I can ride on the road to get to my favourite offroad spots and then get back home.
>>
>>28892905
I gotcha. It is a great looking bike. I’ll look for one, but I’ll probably wind up getting an older Suzuki DR or some Yamaha.
Idk much about them (wrenching either), but some guy has an 86 street legal TT for sale on marketplace which is pretty interesting.
In terms or dirt bikes, I’ve had Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki. Of those 3 Yamaha was however my favorite.
