I see no obvious downsides and it would instantly render all arguments SUV/hauler fags have over sedan invalid. You can literally fit a whole house into the trunk of a liftback sedan. Look at this shit. Who needs more? And you get to drive a sedan that is actually FUN and responsive and not just a boat on wheels. This should be the default car type you'd see on the roads, not SUVs or station wagons.

People who live among nonwhites need a place to store things that can't be seen/accessed from a car window
>>
>>28896572
liftback is stupid, worst of both worlds
you either get a sedan or a proper estate
>>
copeback
shoulda bought a hatch
>>

>liftback is stupid, worst of both worlds
Why is it the worst of both worlds? It sounds like the best of both worlds, you get the elegant shape and design of sedan and almost all of the practicality of an estate. Do you or most people really use up 100% or even 90% of all the cargo space in an estate?
>>
>>28896582
>you get the boring looks of a normiemobile and only lose most of the practicality of an estate
>>
>>28896588
Sedan is not a normiemobile. Estate is (now replaced by SUV). Sedans are becoming almost exotic around here. You don't lose most of the practicality of estate, a fraction of it. Which you probably don't even use 99% of the time.

It's so weird how this really hits, sedans used to be the standard vehicle, I'm a pre Internet human so I remember a lot of weird things. Also, bring back wagons and hatchbacks
>>
>>28896596
I don't consider Toyotas to be cars or Toyota drivers to be human. Sorry.
>>
>>28896598
>sedans used to be the standard vehicle
they still are
go to any parking lot, 99% of vehicles will be CUVs, sedans, and trucks
>>28896601
>my sedan isn't a normiemobile because its heckin german engineered
engineered for german normies to drive from Berlin to Frankfurt at 160km/h so they don't miss their corporate luncheon
>>
>>28896582
you get a huge heavy rear door opening for no benefit other than "muh elegant"
sedan is lighter and stiffer
estate is lighter (turns out if you don't make the door comprise quarter of the roof you need less door), got way more (and more usable) space and better visibility
>>28896594
>estate is
boomer lives in the 70s before minivans replaced estates as family cruisers (and then got replaced by suvs themselves)
>>
>>28896606
>engineered for german normies to drive from Berlin to Frankfurt at 160km/h
This is far more than you can say about Goyota's hybrid shitboxes that will rattle like shit the moment you hit 100km/h.
>>
>>28896607
So the issue is weight? have you considered going to the gym? Most cars have automatic openings anyways. Estates are god awful boxes and they block the view for the drivers behind you.

That's a refreshing sight in traffic amidst an endless ocean of view blocking SUVs and estates.

a liftback doesn't make sense if you have proper sedan proportions

The wagon looks way better.
>>
>>28896811
but anon, think of how that extra 2/3rds of an inch will block everyone's view, and don't even get me started on all the extra cargo space
my groceries would have so much room to jostle around back there

>>28896816
you've actually got better vis THROUGH the wagon because the rear window is taller

It's kind of insane how a thread can get so many posts from people so passionate about a subject yet ultimately don't even know what they're talking about in the slightest.
The real answer is most people with sedans don't need it, since it really only allows to you fit one thing that's very big. It's not like the trunk is bigger, it just lets you use the backseats as cargo space. Now even when you're not using it, you've still got this open air cargo area sucking up the hvac and anything rolling or rattling around back there can be heard while driving so it's just a worse daily experience in exchange for a very occasional utility benefit
>>
You tend to get more road noise when the cabin envelops the rear wheel area versus when the rear wheels are in a separated trunk space. Road noise is one of the most important yet most frequently overlooked aspects of how enjoyable a car is to own.
>>
>>28896792
The sedan does not block my view in a traffic jam.
>>
>>28896572
>I see no obvious downsides
Louder interior due to the trunk not being isolated from the cabin
>>
>>28896945
What "view" exactly is being blocked in a TRAFFIC JAM?
>>
>>28896572
Noise.
>>28896945
How short are you?
>>
>>28896574
cargo covers should be standard in all liftback/hatchback
also, everyone should have at least 20% ceramic tint on their rear windows
>>
>>28896736
agreed but the b10 gen actually looks like a sedan. dont like the old a5 or a7 silhouette at all
>>
>>28896811
the a4 sedan always looked ugly, but this gen the trunk lid is truly hideous even in person
>>
>>28896606
even german shitboxes are decent at high speed. coworker couldn't beleive my beat to shit, heavily modified golf was smoother on the highway at 170 than his brand new rav4 was at 120
>>
>>28896960
>following civic
>see a few cars ahead in most lanes
>following escape
>can maybe see one car ahead, and only in alternate lanes
the wagon comment is retarded, but for anyone who genuinely believes you don't need visibility over the sea of crossovers and suvs, let me take this time to remind you to renew your bus pass
>>
>>28897029
Not sure why you'd need to see any further forward than the car in front of you when you're sitting in a traffic jam and can only move when the car directly in front of you does.
>>
>>28896945
They are the same size, anon. They take up the same amount of your view.
>>
>>28897067
NTA but once you see those crazy 18-wheeler accident webms you understand why you want maximum visibility and off-road capabilities
>>
>>28897025
lol my old golf would just about hit that speed if you held your foot to the floor for a couple minutes

>>
>>28897107
once again, the estate and the liftback have the same rear cross section, they take up the same amount of your view
>>
>>28896705
heavy door means heavy car
retard
>>
>>28896574
Nah. They just bust the back little window and pull down the seat to see if there's anything in the trunk.
Just look up San Francisco car breakin on youtube and you'll find a video of someone busting that window, pulling down the seat, and taking a look in like 10 seconds.
>>
>>28896572
Well the downside is clearly it's going to be more expensive to manufacture.
You're going to need more powerful gas pistons to lift up that much more mass, and it's going to take more careful designing during development.
>>
>>28896572
What about something similar, but instead of going straight up the truck door slides forward over the roof? this way it's not a problem in low ceiling areas like parking garages.
>>
>>28897025
Rav4 is a glorified oversized toy for soccer moms. Past muh MPGs, it's awful in every way.
