Can someone explain to me the extreme inflation for used car prices? I don't understand. I get that during COVID, there was a chip shortage, which led to a general supply chain shortage, which meant that manufacturers could not make new cars fast enough. This means that buyers couldn't just buy new cars easily, and sometimes engaged in bidding wars at dealerships. Thus, due to the low supply, dealers increased the prices for used cars. Classic supply and demand. Lower supply of cars, with same demand = higher prices. I understand that. It makes sense to me. But that was a few years ago. The supply chain issues are fixed. Manufacturers are able to produce new cars at the rates they were doing pre-covid. And not even that, for some unpopular models, you have brand new cars that have been sitting on the lots for 6 months sometimes over a year, that haven't sold yet. You would think that with such an over-supply, the prices for cars, especially used cars, would be dropping and maybe even going back to what they normally were pre-covid. But that's not happening. Check pic related. I saw this last night when browsing since I'm in the market for a new car. This makes no sense to me. On the left you have a brand new 2026 Ford Maverick, selling for around 28k. This seems like a perfectly reasonable price to me for a new hybrid vehicle. But right next to it, at a different dealership you have a 4 year old 2022 Maverick with n early 70k males for 22k. Barely $6000 less for a vehicle 4 years old that's approaching 100k miles. Seems like insanity to me. If the new one is 28k, the 4 year old used one should be 20 grand maximum, but really 15k would be an actually sensible price. Am I crazy? Why are the used prices still so high when the new prices aren't even that bad? If I was determined to buy one of these cars, what's even the incentive to buy the used one instead of spending just a little bit more for a brand new one?
There are many, many factors.I could ramble on about some factors I speculate on, but it wouldn't do anything.
trucks project a masculine image and insecure men will pay HUGE money for shitty awful-riding crude slow trucks just to project machismoyou won't find these prices on sedans

You are the problem. You never considered that maybe you were living above your means all along. You never considered the absurdity of every trailer park white trash driving these massive cars around as if it was their God given right. I'm glad mutts are finally waking up to their own shit. It's going to get worse. Gas prices will go up. Prices will go up. Wars will spread. But hey atleast your orange pedophile was funny on TV!
>>28897842used car prices represent the overalll economy of a country. if its good people buy new cars and give away their old ones for cheap, if its bad fewer buy new cars and they dont sell their old ones for cheap. its about time you understand that you are in a downturn economicly. used cars are not as cheap as they used to be here in norway so it affects us all, but the mid range priced cars still exist. its hard to buy a 500€ car today but you can find a 2000k to 10 000k car thats fully functional and will last you a lifetime.
>>28897928In Norway you can get a cheap used EV and electricity is cheap and everyone earns good.
>>28897933ev's are not that cheap since everyone want them. and all fossile fueled cars are taxed into oblivion. but somehow used they are cheap, unless its a toyota landcruiser. i got a citroen berlingo almost brand new for 600 since it had "broken transmission" lol i just hooked up the shifter linkage and it was fixed. i got an e250 7,3 diesel van for 180€ also due to transmission issues, i just hooked up the transmission controller and it was fixed. people here give away their cars for free because they are too dumb to do basic repairs.
>>28897933cool story salmon boy

>>28897842Used car prices were fucked and pointless way before covid. It was only high depreciation shitboxes that you could "skip the depreciation" by buying them used. High resale value vehicles like pickups were always priced a few grand under the MSRP for a 4 year old truck with 50k+ miles.
>>28897982>Used car prices were fucked and pointless way before covid. It was only high depreciation shitboxes that you could "skip the depreciation" by buying them used. High resale value vehicles like pickups were always priced a few grand under the MSRP for a 4 year old truck with 50k+ miles.OP here, please explain why this. I posted the pic in the initial post specifically because it's a Ford Maverick which is a relatively popular high selling vehicle. >>28897893>covid revealed that people were willing to pay fantastically retarded prices just to get new thing NOWYeah, but it's not COVID anymore. I understand why during 2021 or 2022, people would pay a high price for a 3-5 year old used car with 50-100k miles, just to have something to drive now, rather than order a new car and have to wait 3-9 months. That makes sense. But it's not COVID anymore. Both of the cars I posted in the OP are available now. What is the economic reality to where a 4 year old car with 70k miles is only 15% cheaper than a brand new car with 0 miles? To me, the used care should be at least 30% cheaper than the new car. I just want an explanation. Is it just dealers being greedy as fuck, and knowing that some retard will eventually buy the overpriced used car? (I understand most normies are basically retarded). Is it that the dealers would prefer that you buy the new car, and so they'll jack up the price on used cars in order to make the new cars seem like the better deal, even though you're paying more money?Or is it that these newer cars built since 2020 are really just so reliable and well-built that they hold their value well, and that a car that sold for 25-28k brand new in 2022 really is worth 22k 4 years later with 70k miles?I'm just trying to understand the actual issues behind this absurd pricing
>>28897996the explanation is no one buys a new car. it got nothing to do with dealers, jews or whatever, if none buy new cars there wont be cheap used cars. you might start to look for used cars in europe, if you can import them.
>>28897996Mavericks are not that popular or high selling. As a used vehicle they're a hybrid with a million failure points and it's a Ford so have fun getting fucked up the ass for parts. That's going to lead to a low resale value.
over supply is bad. dealerships are big and stupid and are hungry for cash. smaller shit dealers have to copy them and are scumbags in general.
>>28897842Why should used cars be cheap when every year the bees cars are worse?
>>28897842Cars get shittier every year which makes the older car more valuable than traditional depreciation mechanics would imply.

>>28898103>Why are you not a bloodthirsty kike puppet like we are in AMERICA?Your country is a joke. Your obsession with trucks says everything about you and your failing nation.
>>28897842The problem with the maverick is basically only 2 companies make these things. You got the maverick and Santa fe. If you want a hybrid theres now one company that makes them. It genuinely is one of the best npc cars you can buy right now if you can only have 1 car. Demand is extremely high and prices reflect that. Ford has no issues selling these things and interest rates are fucked on these. I have a general rule to never buy brand new vehicles but I broke it in this case because it was literally the same price as a used one. Until more competition hits this segment (it might never) prices will always be retarded.
>>28897842>Can someone explain to me the extreme inflation for used car prices? I don't understand. normalcattle are fucking retarded and banks are more than happy to enable their retardation with massive lines of credit.
>>28898124The question is not "why are prices high" it's "why are new and used prices almost the same?" Saying "there's high demand" doesn't answer that because there is plenty of supply of new vehicles to fill the demand.

Oh hey guise, buy 5,000 lb Shitbox5000. It's got driver cameras with AI that scores you and sends whatever scores to the manufacturers who sell it to data brokers and insurance.Man, Ibet you love that you can't twist off a headlight bulb anymore - you love paying some HS grad $750 for a headlight because the bumper has to be taken off and a radiator hose has to be disconnected so new coolant! Bonus!Proprietary bolts, parts that won't work unless synced to the car with dealer only tools. It's got APPLE CAR PLAY AND LED INTERIOR LIGHTING OMG.
Someone hit and ran you when you were parked?Bummer, there are a whole lot of sensors around here, that'll be $8,000 with okay repair quality.Meanwhile the 2010 owner gets it all replaced for $2k.

>>28897996>To me, the used care should be at least 30% cheaper than the new car>Is it just dealers being greedy as fuckYes. I keep seeing videos online about how there are tons of new models like Jeep Wagoneers and Gladiators sitting on lots for nearly a year. >>28897906>let me tell you about your countrykek but that's literally all europeans do that's where the whole "obsessed" meme comes from
>REEE why isn't [thing I want] cheaper!>I'm so smart I can explain why I think it should be cheaper!>You have [thing], you must sell it to me for X because econ 101 says...You are buying things from people, why should they give away their assets to you because "it's oooold?"A clean low-mileage stock, LSD+leather NA8 miata (for example) kbbs for like $1,500, but don't expect to pay $1,500, expect $12-16k.Older cars will never be built at scale again. Demand for good ones always increases as supply dwindles.People aren't making as much spendable income now so they want a fair deal when selling their assets.
I things got better you wouldn't need to to vote
I think part of the reason car prices are high particularly desirable models is that people have no impulse control and will spend any amount of money to get what they want even if they don't have it and the price is completely irrational
>>28897842>>28897996The answer is not that complicated. We can go into the details but the simple answer is that it's the market who sets the prices. Not the dealerships or even the manufacturers. Meaning they sell at that price because people buy them at that price. And before some idiot in here greentexts that particular line to try and clown on me, yes, I'm aware that cars are sitting on lots for far longer nowadays, but the simple truth is that one sucker out there will buy it. Nowadays people will buy the car online across state lines sight unseen. If people would just see the prices and go Fucking NO! this would fix itself, but nope, all people care about is if the car payment fits into their monthly budget, which is why you have seen the rise of the 72-84-96 month car loan. Using this they've been able to stave off having to drop prices since with these adjustments people are still buying cars, at a much slower rate for sure, but it's keeping the market limping along without having to do massive price adjustments.
>>28899358>Sure but these are two cars from the same model. The newer one is even a refreshed/updated version.Yes it's newer and refreshed with even more bullshit, tracking, screens, and not-user-serviceable systems.
>>28897842That's about 5.1% loss per year Looks like a normal depreciation curve anon.
>>28897842People don't want to buy new cars because they are crap. EV, hybrid ICE? To hard to decide. Used car market is high because people don't want any of that shit.
If its a car made before 2014 it's valuable, if it's made after 2014 it's worth literally nothing. No I won't elaborate, if you know you know.
>>28900384I do know.Picrel + making you log into your google / apple accounts.
>>28897895>maverick>godzilla sizedRight from the mouth of an obsessed eurocuck bus rider. The maverick is tiny compared to any quarter tons and might as well be a smart car compared to an F250. And OP is right that used car prices have been getting asinine over the past few years, there’s no reason why a base model maverick should cost $20k+ used, especially if it’s usable bed space is that of an SUV trunk with the top of it sliced off.
>>28898223A collision bad enough to pop the AC is not a minor fender bender. A minor fender bender would bend the fender. As the name implies. You have a bunch of other shit. Why are you retarded? Do you vote?
>>28900513Vote red no matter what
>>28900161The refreshed maverick is straight up just an update to fix it's weak points. Stronger axles because people were lifting and putting on big heavy tires and breaking them on the old ones. The new gauge cluster and infotainment are extremely basic and not expensive to replace if something goes wrong.Out of ALL the vehicles the Maverick has the best chance of lasting a long time>Mazda 4 cylinder Duratec engine known to last 300k+ miles>Aisin planar gear based transmission>Hybrid system licensed from Toyota>Engine is actually very understressed because it runs at 75% load all the time, and 85% load when you tow. Prius runs the engine at 95% load all the time.>XL model has pretty much no creature comforts just the tablet and speakers, no power anything.Anyways OPs post doesn't go into detail the trim differences of these vehicles. One is an XL base model and the used one is a higher trim. Adding the XLT pkg and heated seats pkg to the Maverick increases the cost by like $5000 from the dealer alone and definitely isn't worth it
>>28901515>packages increasing costwhile true to a degree, I always notice it's even further diminished returns in a used vehicle. I purchased a used 2020 sedan in 2025 with a similar mileage split with a handful of creature comforts against a bare bones base model, but the price difference against that base model was still close to 55-60% for a 74k mile car. hell, I could get the sport model (not the sport package) for "only" a few thousand more, but I know those fuckers are flogged on, so it's less of a tempting buy with that kind of mileage for a dd
>>28901515There's zero reason to buy a car larping as a truck. Get a ranger, at least it has an actual frame.
>>28901584Uhh why would I want to get half the gas mileage and less interior space for 6 more inches of bed? For 30% more cost? I can throw a fridge in the bed of the maverick just the same as a rangerLets not forget the maverick has subaru style AWD you can't turn off and the ranger is 2wd most of the time
>>28901599>the maverick has subaru style AWD you can't turn offIncorrect. It is AWD at starts and stops but goes to 100% FWD once you're moving unless slip is detected.
You forgot about the volume of unsold vehicles just sitting in a hidden parking structure or warehouse to enforce artificial scarcity.
>>28901604Nope. You haven't watched videos how it works. It's ALWAYS CONNECTED at 30mph and below, it disconnects at highway speed and any significant acceleration (pressing the pedal 60% and engaging the engine) reconnects it. I actually spent a lot of time trying to find out if eco mode disabled AWD or if there was a way to turn it off and there isn't, it functions the same in every mode and is in use at all times besides when you're very lightly gliding on the highway.
>>28901659That's just more detail of what I said.If you want me to be argumentative:That shit isn't anything like Subaru's. Subaru is longitudinal, centered, with the driveshaft centered and equal length axles. It is always engaged all the time because it's fully mechanical and simple. The simplicity makes it good. The maverick will go 100%FWD a lot of the time. It's transverse so you've got to turn the power around. It's complicated as fuck, with a "disconnecting power transfer unit" and "electromechanical rear-drive unit" that's managed by a computer that takes in various data from the throttle to the ABS wheel speed sensors. These aren't alike at all.Maverick's probably fine, and that system looks like a practical balance between grip and fuel economy, but it's no Subaru AWD.
>>28897842
>>28901695It's still active pretty much at all times. There is a display in the dash that shows you how much power is going to what wheels. I have never seen anything besides power going to all wheels on that display outside of highway. It's still better than a 2wd ranger at all times
>>28901599It's a cuck wagon, you might as well take the trunk door off and use a civic.
>>28901695Subarus use a shit mechanical CVT transmission design with sheaves and a chain. Maverick uses a far superior eCVT design licensed from Toyota, similar to the one in the Prius, no chain belt, just a pair of electric motors, gears, and shafts. While the symmetrical Subaru AWD is a great design its let down by the CVT which is much more failure prone. The eCVT is by comparison bulletproof. I quickly ditched the idea of getting any new Subaru after doing some research into the transmissions and seeing that high-mileage owners are still complaining about head gasket leaks. The Maverick is an excellent and relatively inexpensive truck if you can tolerate the cheap interior (which looks better than it actually feels). The AWD in these is more than good enough for snow and rain even if it is more complex, had a 2013 AWD Escape with the 2 litre turbo and it was great in all weather, I expect my 2026 Maverick hybrid will be similar.
