So i just got my license and managed to scrape up around 5k eur to spend on a shitbox. Problem is, i live in a southern balkans microstate. Pros - almost no rust. Cons - cant have shit here. Additional complication - i cant wrench for shit and will have to learn somehow, i have a very basic understanding of how ice engine works but no real experience.Based on the local used car market my options are:A) gen 3/4 golf 1.9 tdiB) e46/e87 n47/m47C) taxi spec W210 2.2 cdiD) maybe a W124Off the list are cars that are fr*nch or too rare to get parts for or anybody to know how to work on them. Anything gasoline fits *too rare* description. What option from the above will not rape me financially in case something breaks? What to look for when buying an old diesel? How to not get scammed by Zoran and his brothers?
>>28899546definetly vw, and dont rule out french nor italian. diesel is fun it can easily be tuned, you will end up looking for that so choose an engine model that can easily be tuned.
>>28899546dont be a faggot and get e39 530d m57. if you werent a poor i'd suggest the petrol six pot version ONLY manual (that was the time when autos weren't that good and were slower). easily the best starter car for DIY. e46 is fine if you can find a six pot manual one but nowadays impossible to find one.
e46 my beloved. but proper ones are out of your budget BIGLY
>>28899546e46 so you can be a balkan final boss, plus points if it's on steel wheels with no hub caps and has completely fucked paintwork. Oh and a rosary hanging from the rear view mirror. Why does it have to be diesel? I'm surprised that gasoline cars would be particularly harder to find parts for, in Croatia I saw loads of Twingos and other assorted petrol 1L shitboxes. If it weren't for that I'd suggest a 1.2 Panda, they're pretty bomb proof and I've never had issues getting parts.
>>28899640> I'm surprised that gasoline cars would be particularly harder to find parts forThat's just my smoothbrain assumption since almost everyone drives diesel here
>>28899546buy a bicycle
>>28899546Octavia I or II depending on prices. Thank me later.
>>28899694Nigga wtf are those prices lmao fucking how??????
>>28899546e39 530d manual only
>>28899694At least from my experience (in the UK) the stuff that breaks on the Panda isn't the engine anyway. I've had to replace a few CV boots, the wiper motors, the exhaust once and the front suspension wishbones (the rubber joint had worn out) in about 7 or 8 years (in my ownership, car is 2011).I did have to do the clutch once as well (that is an expensive and engine related job, don't recommend it), but I blame that more on the driver than the car. That's the one drivetrain replacement it's needed (even then it got me back home half way across the country). It's not at all sexy (especially because yellow fiat = meme in the UK) but for me at least it's been a cheap shitbox. I wouldn't buy one with high mileage though, I think I read somewhere the engine is meant to have overhaul around 140-150k miles (225k km).tl;dr:- Not sure how the diesel engine is in the car, 1.2 and 1.4 petrol is good (don't get the 0.9, it's anemic)- In my nation most cars are petrol and I never had issues getting parts, I won't speak for your country because idk- Most of the parts which broke on mine weren't engine related- I found mine to be cheap to keep running, much more so than I would expect from a merc or bmw- Panda 4x4s are really well regarded, not sure about their mine resistanceObvious caveat that I am a perfidious albion and my experience might not match Balkan reality.
>>28899750shit I forgot to mention that actually lmao.Don't pay that much for a Panda. Mine cost £2500(ish) back in 2017 and might sell for maybe £1200 now. The 4x4s command more money, I'd argue more than they're worth in most cases. That 0.9 for 4550 Euro is a joke, everyone I've ever spoken to who's driven a 0.9 twin air powered car says the engine is pathetic.>>28899749Was Octavia the same 1.9 diesel as the Golf? I seem to remember them being the same engine but idk if I'm going mental.
>>28899777no the engine is an original design by skodawhat the fuck do you think?
>>28899786No need to get your panties in a twist xister, I know the HRT is hitting you badly but it was just a polite question about cars on a forum dedicated to discussing cars, perhaps /lgbt/ would be more your speed?
>>28899970why do you come to a board dedicated to discussing cars if you know nothing about the topic of discussion
>>28899970uh oh stinky oopsie you must be on the wrong board :-( >>>/n/
>>28900012I think I am the only person in this thread that gave any kind of detailed response. If you're such an expert on cars why do you come to a forum to discuss them? pretty sure you must know everything there is to know by now and you clearly aren't interested in answering questions so what are you doing here?
