Automatic miata fag here, some days I really want a manual, other days I like to pretend I'm in a race car and use the paddle shifters. Some days I really want an NC, other days I envy my neighbors NB, some days I wish I had an MGB.

At the end of the year what I really want is to not live in a gay country filled with grey skies and roads that only go straight with no changes in elevation.

I know what you mean, out of all the thousands and thousands of cars I pass in a month, I'll see maybe 1 MGB if I'm lucky, and it's usually the same one, yet if you go to a car meet/show, hundreds of the fuckers suddenly burst forth from their hiding places.

It makes sense, though, as from what I can tell, MGBs have survived the best out of any classic car in the UK, with howmanyleft.co.uk reporting a total of around 25,000 registered on the road in 2025. Makes sense to me, considering that they are an enthusiast car, of which over half a million were built worldwide. MGCs are a bit rarer, with only 8,999 having been produced and only 1,202 surviving on the road, and factory built V8s are the rarest of the lot, with only 2,591 being built and 736 still on the road as of 2025, mine being one of them.

desu auto miata anon if you're gonna get an auto, if you absolutely need an auto for some insane godforsaken reason, there's only one choice. ND2 with a supercharger. the auto can take the extra power whereas the manual often can't, so if you're going to get the worst transmission, you might as well pair it with a more potent engine so aren't completely consumed by the inevitable regret, and have the chance to realize the value of swapping in an NC or walter motorsports tranny

Replace the valve stem seals, or live with it and top the oil off as needed, though the oil going through the exhaust can kill your catalytic converter. It can be done with the head still on the car but it's not a job I would recommend for a beginner at all.

>>
>>28905629
You kind of already did. Blue smoke after sitting that goes away after driving it isn't really caused by anything else besides valve stem seals that are starting to go. If it didn't go away, then you might suspect the piston rings, a PCV issue, or even valve steam seals that have simply disintegrated completely. Short of pulling the head off and pouring oil into it then watching if it leaks out of the valves, there isn't really much else to do to test them.

You don't, especially if it's only sunny 3 months of the year. I should've bought a project, not a brand new miata. Still would take it over a normal car any day. Anyone have whirring noises after a timing belt replacement that went away? I'm getting it mostly when accelerating in first and 3rd gear.

All signs point to an over tensioned belt, but I'm pretty sure I adjusted the tensioner pulley correctly while in there (loosened the tensioner at TDC, then brought the slack down towards the pulley before tightening back up)

It's a continental belt and I replaced the tensioner and idler pulley while I was in there.
>>
>>28906535
when I changed the belt on my 1.6, it took all sorts of hell to get it on and needed zero tension from the spring (and probably didn't get any since the belt was so tight). I followed the proper procedure of spinning the crank by 1.6 times or whatever to move the slack around...
I didn't have a tension measuring tool at that point, wish I did.
Anyhow, the point is, it made a lot of noise and didn't go away. Maybe it would've after a bit. I suspect the belt was NOT correct even though the part # and all of the shit said it was, it should not have been THAT difficult. I changed the belt on a 1.8 vvt I ended up swapping in and it was not nearly as difficult and does not make noise...

I got mine from the flyin miata 91-93 timing kit. I would HOPE that the parts are correct.

The belt was a little tricky to get around the tensioner at first, but there was still plenty of slack between the cam gears after, so I don't think the belt size or tensioner location are an issue.

I just cracked open the middle timing cover and the tensioner is about center with the bolt, so the spring is definitely doing something. I'll try loosening it and running it through again to see if it's any further left. I suppose it's possible I slid the tensioner over to the right a big when torquing the nut.

I've come to the conclusion that the ND is actually too powerful, I can't even enjoy the exhaust note on my car because within a few seconds I'm already doing near 100km/hr in 3rd gear from a full stop. The 1st gear power boost when you get near 4500 rpm just launches the car and since the ratios are short you're still making peak power after shifting. I have to basically skip first gear to enjoy the long acceleration sound, and still it sounds kind of anemic and not really nice with a straight piped exhaust. It's gone too far away from being a small british roadster.
>>
>>28906871
More the perk of an attentive owner. Very little brake fluid has been spilled, and the little that was was probably wiped up very quickly. Lucky bastard.

turbos seem like such a headache. But there really aren't great options for power besides that...
>>28907056
that's tough. Those are all great cars. part of me would say brz or gr corolla because if you're in an accident you probably have a better chance of not being completely btfo but at the same time that's just being neurotic.
Those cars do have the benefit of more seats, though. Maybe sometime you want to drive the fun car with a kid or two in it as well.

Decisions...
>tfw rx350 and cx5 and deciding between those same cars too
I'm thinking a brz. I don't want to get caught with a 2-seater like a miata when i suddenly need to pick up the kid or some shit...even though those are some of the most coolest looking cars on the market right now.
The GR Corolla is a close second but I think it's pricier and it might just remind me of my old civic type r...which was a great car but for some reason I just want a brz. and used 2.4L aren't terribly expensive.

My new NB1 doesn't have any gas in the AC, as tested by poking something into the OC line valves and it lightly hissing for a second then nothing.
Is this 28yo car likely to just need a regas or is a leak confirmed? The oldies in my life talk about regassing the AC like it's standard practice so I was thinking about picking up a can of HyChill and seeing what happens.

>>
>>28907426
The only reason the AC refrigerant will ever be low is if there's a leak, it can't get burned like engine oil. You might be able to find it just by looking for oily spots on the AC system, otherwise while it's already empty, put about 15 mL of PAG oil with UV dye in it first and then recharge it. Depending on the size of the leak you might need to drive it for a week or two before any dye comes out that you can use a UV flashlight to make it easy to spot. The most common leak sources are the discharge hose, service port valve cores, and the O rings on the hoses that go into the compressor.

Help me! I have a 04 mint with 30k miles on it and the ac isn't bussin. Like the compressor kicks on and cycles seemingly normally and there's juice in the lines but the air out of the vents isnt very cold. I have another 04 clapped with like 200k on it and it works better and I never touched the ac before. Any ideas? Chat gpt said it's some expansion valve or some shit.
>>
>>28907429
I have the auto and it's unevenly spaced, 1-2-3 is close together and then a gulf between 3 and 4 and 5 and then 5-6 is close together. Or maybe it was 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. Either way it's not good, it was made for high speed acceleration from a stop up to cruising speed and then low fuel usage at cruising speed.
>>
>>28907104
If it's a stock miata leave it the fuck alone, maybe do some mild suspension work and call it good.

If you want to turbo one, find a beater.
>>
>>28907617
Both fans working? Hard to diagnose AC performance over text without a set of gauges on it. It's possible it's just low needing a recharge, with just enough in it to engage but not really do anything. Moisture in the system can also do that which is also solved by an evac and recharge during the vacuum pull, which boils any moisture off. I've also seen the filter-drier clog but it doesn't look like that's available separately from the condenser for an NB2, unless the one on rockauto just shows the wrong picture (it shows the NB1 style drier).
>>
>>28907617
check the pressures before you go throwing parts at it. A low pressure is the most common cause (which means a leak, somewhere)

>>
>>28908238
I think they fixed the rod knock issue that the fa20 had, but the fa24 has rtv problems (maybe fixed on newer models?) and severe oil starvation issues when taking right corners hard. there are a bunch of aftermarket bandaids but idk if anyone's come up with a proven dry sump. even aside from that it's just not an inspiring engine

the GRC has its own issues with oil cooling and diff cooling when being tracked on warm days, particularly at high altitudes. both have aftermarket fixes (oil cooler, exhaust wrap, diff cooler, and a real diff temp sensor instead of the retarded guesswork the stock ECU does) but it's kind of lame that Toyota didn't really address either in the refresh. clutch kinda sucks too, even in my '25. can't imagine how bad the original clutch was, it has a very bad rep in the GRC community

ND2/3 likes to eat 3rd gear tho that seems to be something that shows up fairly quickly, and Mazda has been good about replacing them. they really should just put the NC trans in there but would get bad press for the 21kg weight increase

Goddamnit I love miatas. After 5 years without one, I'm glad to be back. There's no point to this post, but these cars are everything I say they are, what a great time.

I don't know what to tell you other than that's just false. Literally just read the manual. The amount of power that the engine makes has nothing to do with it. Is a 2l engine making 180 hp supposed to be some feat of engineering? Fact is, that this is basically still just a mazda3 economy car engine with the redline bumped up a little. The engine was designed around regular fuel despite the high compression ratio.

You can of course put whatever you want in it, Mazda engineers have told you that it's not required though. Arguing that it is is just ridiculous.
>>
>>28909310
you won't save any money because your fuel economy will drop on regular.

Some chick rear ended my NA on Halloween '19. I had it 11 years, it was flood damaged in Hurricane Katrina and I restored the fuck out of it, probably spent $15-20k, got $900 from full-coverage insurance. It can disappear any day.
I'm so happy to have one again, I was starting to think it was over.

I have stock Bilstein's and suspension for sure not made for fast tracks, going to install tecna's this summer.

A lot better on street than Brembo pads on stock brakes and when gets some heat brakes even more amazing, you can feel how they bite into brake disk.

EBC Yellow Stuff isn't great for track use, and EBC says as much on their website, something that wasn't mentioned on BOFI's website when I bought them. Bear in mind that my track car is an NA that's virtually stock performance wise, with only the NS-2R tyres making any appreciable difference to braking ability. My first track day with them was at brands hatch, and I got brake fade coming into Paddock Hill Bend after a few laps, something that never happened with the Brembo HP2001's I had previously, and the second track day was a Thruxton with similar results, though nowhere near as dramatic as Brands. I have yet to have a third day out with them, but I think I'm going to be swapping them out for something more suitable. They seem to be a good pad for exactly what they're marketed as - a fast road pad - but they cannot withstand lap after lap of abuse.

As much as I love the older gens, they're not practical at all and finding one in good condition and then taking care of it isn't easy. It's also a 30+ yo car. This is a much nicer dailyable car. Also the hardtop roof goes all the way down in the NCs. I think if you try to find a nice NC2/3, you'd be surprised at how difficult it can be

Are you looking at one of the handling packages? Just the Koni yellows by themselves is showing $979 for me, while the cheapest Tecnas are $1399. The NA stage 1 handling package isn't such a bad deal at $1208 though, it adds in their FM springs and you definitely have to get stiffer springs to match Koni yellows' stiffer damping, can't use stock ones. I don't get why the version that adds top hats in is $300 more, I'd get those elsewhere for less. They even say they're just KYBs which are $51 each on rockauto right now.

For daily driver the nc, for weekend the nd. Nc has more room, nd is a better sports car
>>
>>28912907
yeah I was looking at the version with the springs and top hats, since that's equivalent to what you get with the tecnas. at that price point, I think the fm kit should have the extended rear top hats. when my miata was running the konis it really needed them, and it was barely even lowered. but I guess fm wants you to spend another $300 for those
>>28913581
nc is a better sports car imo. much stouter transmission, forged internals on nc2/3 engines, more room for wide rubber (can go to 255 stock, tho anything wider than 235 is probably pointless for stock engine), hydraulic steering, 2.5l swap is ezpz
>>
>>28913576
i vote for ND2 miata.
>>
>>28913576
You need to test drive them, the ND is a very tight car. I'm 6ft but all legs so I just about fit in the drivers seat, but not in the passengers. The seats are also very narrow. The NDs looks are killer though and modern up to date electronics isn't bad either, that's something you need to consider. If you want a nanny car that has a camera and sensors watching all the time or a purist experience.
>>
I gotta say, driving down the highway this morning in the middle of a thunderstorm and then through the fog afterwards with the top down puts the ND RF in a class of its own. That buffeting everyone always complains about makes an air bubble in the cabin and keeps rain/ road spray out and the heat in. I always see people driving around with their cloth tops up when my roof is down.
>>
>>28913018
No one posts their Miata because being 4chan famous isn't really something to be proud of.

For people with the soft top ND, do you get the heat bubble effect in the cabin that the RF has or does air just blow right through making it cold as fuck when the outside temp is cold?

Vinyl yes, canvas no (assuming it's dry, and with a glass window.) You could also just lower the soft top in warmer conditions (like in your garage) and leave it down until it's that cold if you're that concerned.

The seals on the windows have the ability to hold water for a while. After I wash it I roll down the windows and wedge drying towels down into them keep the windows down for 2 hours and let them air out. Then when they come up dry I clean them

>>
>>28915448
>There's a disturbing amount of water on my windows after I wind them down and back up on my ND
cost of doing business. I mitigate it after a wash by rolling down, up, drying with a microfiber x3-4 times on each window. If it's <40 F and humidity isn't high the inside of the door dries in a couple hours after that and you can roll up and down with reckless abandon and stay dryer than a nun's cooter. dries faster if you do some highway driving too
>>
So it sounds like the most recent report from a couple weeks ago is that the NE Miata won't be electrified.
>>
Anyone use a tow hook license mount? What do you do to cover the hole

Fiatanon here. Same thing. My guess is that the outside wiper doesn't make good contact so water just goes in and when you roll the window down they don't get wiped on their way back up either.

I looked up the manual for the car and it has 2 pieces so I would need to drill it out space on both. The top cover is cheap at like $30 so I can buy one of those but the bottom is $50. I've never designed anything in modelling software but I do wonder if I could 3d print something
>>
>>28915448
Okay, but what's a good amount you would realistically want to spend on a NA miat? If it's in good condition? I'm debating on getting an NA as a second car, or getting an ND as a daily - which would mean I would have to sell my Mazda3, which for me seems a fantastic car.
>>
>>28918445
I'm also looking at selling my 2019 Mazda 3 for an ND2 Miata. NAs have risen too high in price to be worth it to me and I think crash safety is something worth considering in a daily driver.

I really like my current car and I'll probably miss AWD in winter, but I don't commute for work and that second row of seats is hardly ever used.
>>
Haven't had a Miata in some time, but I'm kinda in the mood again lately. I had an NA6 and it was nice.
Should I stick with another NA6, NA8 or go to an NB? I don't really want an NC.

Water on windows anon here, I kept both my mazda 3 and miata... I'm also the anon with the automatic miata.

Don't get rid of the mazda 3, IMO you can't daily the miata in real snow. The miata starts sliding if the road is a little bit wet, the one time I drove it in snow I skidded sideways into a snow bank right outside my house with barely any speed.

I shouldn't have bought a new miata, I should've bought an old beater because it is the kind of car you want to slide sideways into a snow bank.
>>
I have dreams about racing a miata.
Is the hardtop strictly necessary via the rules?
I like the convertibles more, and if there is a removable hard top option that would let me do both that would be cool.
Otherwise ill just get a powered hard top and suffer.
>>
>>28919124
they all have a certain feel
na6 feels the lightest and most rev happy
na8 similar but a tad less sporty, motor definitely feels less special.
nb1 definitely feels more refined, newer of course, best 1.8 imo. but it's definitely late 90s/early 2000s styling
>>
>>28919204
afaik all of the wheel to wheel racing series require a hardtop. NA/NB didn't have a power hardtop option, only a removable fiberglass one. The OEM hardtops have gotten stupid hard to find and prohibitively expensive, so a lot of people are going with some fairly shitty aftermarket ones that are race-legal with horrid fitment
best way to go is to look for a Miata that has the OEM hardtop. they tend to command a big premium over the ones that don't but it beats trying to hunt around for a second-hand one (which is usually fucked) or buying a shitty aftermarket one. maybe Mazda will make another run of factory hardtops but they'll wind up costing $5k each or some shit
>>
>>28919327

Quite the contrary actually. The global mx-5 cup car is actually a soft top with a rollbar.
I don't know any aftermarket roll bar solution that fits on the RF(hardtop). I can't speak regarding the NA, NB and NC as I've never seen their racing series like I did for the ND.
Which is why when I was shopping around for one that was one of the primary considerations on why I bought the soft top.
>>
>>28919331
I believe for NC people will do a removable hard top with a rollbar. You can do the prht with a rollbar too but that only works if you're short enough or modify your seat to be lower to pass the broomstick test.
>>
>>28919331
MX-5 Cup cars aren't street-legal lol. They don't have a soft top, either. They're fully caged...there is a Mazda Motorsports hardtop you can get specifally to fit around the cage to make them legal for NASA/SCCA races. Why the IMSA Global Cup series doesn't require them idk. Hard Dog makes a bar for the RF
>>
>>28919145
I daily my ND and can't agree. We got quite a lot of snow here this winter and on the new set of blizzaks I had no problem even in mountains. Just get a set of good tires and you'll be okay. And I could still slide around with a bit of throttle if I wanted. If you slide to snowbanks it's just a skill issue I guess.
>>
>>28919124
What do you want out of your Miata? Race car, daily driver, weekend toy? Can you wrench?
>>
>>28919681
Combo weekend toy/daily driver, definitely can wrench, I've just been out of the game for awhile

Budget of I dunno, 6 to 10k. They were like 3k when I bought my NA years ago.
>>
>>28919864
NB is definitely more refined and has the benefit of being slightly newer, I'd go for one of those if you plan on daily driving it. Not that you can't with an NA, but they're not as comfortable and have less trunk space due to the spare tire and battery not being below the trunk floor like NB. You can likely also get a nicer NB for the same money since they don't have the NA's popups tax. More power and the small tweaks here and there like improved suspension geometry and rear suspension travel, more reliable and better flowing solid lifter head, and better headlight output are nice bonuses as well. I would say the NA has a better aftermarket cosmetics wise if that's your thing, but there's definitely no shortage of mechanical upgrades and things to spend your money on with NB as well.
>>
>>28919912
>due to the spare tire and battery not being below the trunk floor like NB

The ND doesn't even have a spare, and get a tiny racing battery. I've thought about replacing the one in my ND just to save weight.
>>
Are quality NA Miatas at the point where they're just going to keep appreciating in value? I'm looking at a very clean "95 M Edition and wondering if I can justify it as a not totally retarded financial decision.
>>
>>28919928 #
95s are awesome. OBD-I, and the type 1 Torsen LSD that was only in 94-95s. The type 1 swings out fast and is better for drifting but they switched to a type 2 because it's less dangerous. And it's not OBD-II so a hypothetical future dystopian government can't make you plug in a telemetry tracker.
They will almost certainly only increase in value, especially an M. The only problem is when someone crashes into it and you get almost nothing... RIP my 95.

It's not a big enough deal to make me not consider the car, but how much of a pain will only having OBD1 be when it comes to diagnosing my own problems? I don't own a reader, but from what I gather the cheap ones are usually only good for OBD2.

OBD2 is better for diagnosing things. For sure, but miatas are really simple.
I remember I was having cooling issues on my 95 and one of the fans was dead. I had to enter this weird fan test mode by bridging 2 pins on the OBD1 port while holding a brick on the throttle or some shit.
Miatas are very well documented online. I wouldn't be afraid of OBD-1.

I learnt stick driving a hilux for work and considered myself bretty good, the transmission of my new NB makes me feel like a complete noob though. I can't for the life of me get consistent smooth up-shifts (especially 2-3 and reversing in general), although my downshifting is alright.
I still need to put some fresh oil in it though, I haven't had time to freshen it up since I brought it a month ago.
>>
>>28920506
Have you had anyone else who drives stick try your car? Maybe there's something going on mechanically?

I have my brother coming with me to check out the car. Feel lucky cause he already drives a manual and worked on cars for a living before.
>>
>>28920506
Have the clutch hydraulics been replaced? They're a common problem on NA/NB and an inconsistent clutch pedal feel is a classic symptom of a failing clutch master and/or slave cylinder. I would knock both out at once with a new hose too.
>>
>>28920506
I just went from a '20s manual Wrangler to an NB and the NB is like a dream. So easy, so smooth. uhhh. Sometimes 1->2 makes a really high pitched "ding" sound when I shift to 2nd, I really need to change the trans and turret fluids.
>>28920803
On my NA I replaced that slave cylinder 3x in 10 years. It would start getting increasingly difficult to put it into any gear but I don't remember the clutch feeling any different or anything.
>>
>>28921159
do you live in salt lake city or something
i've done it once in the 15 years i've owned my NA
>>28920803
make sure the lil rubber bump stop on the clutch pedal didn't disintegrate. i've seen that fail twice on two cars
>>
>>28921243
>do you live in salt lake city or something
No, Alabama. And other than an intake and exhaust the drivetrain was stock. 3 slave cylinders in ~120k miles. Could be worse, they're only $50, but you have to use one of your free AAA tows and call off from work.
I also had that rubber bushing in the clutch pedal break out on me and fall onto the floor while driving in heavy traffic, that was fun.
>>
>>28921248
>you have to use one of your free AAA tows and call off from work.
oof i also wish i knew how to pop a clutch if parked on a hill. that might not even matter i don't know how cars work, just how to replace parts like legos
on my first NA i literally duct taped a penny where the stopper was supposed to go and that lasted until it got totaled by someone (me)
>>
>>28921253
>oof i also wish i knew how to pop a clutch if parked on a hill.
Are you talking about where you start the car by rolling it down a hill and popping the clutch to start the engine? I used to do to that as a stunt when I had passengers in high school lol good times.
When your slave cylinder goes, IME, you can maybe start the engine, but you cannot physically move the shifter into any gear.
I just bought an NB with 140k miles, maybe I should look into that. Got a lot of other things to do first.
>>
Anyone ever taken out their diff? I have an NA8 with an open diff and I already have the torsen unit ready to go in but I'm kinda hesitant as my exhaust is really rusty.

Do I have to remove the exhaust?
>>
>>28921359
it will be a lot easier if you remove the catback
good time to replace those flange bolts
>>
>>28921159
Really? I've experienced slave cylinder failure in 3 different cars (a subaru, a GM with the concentric slave cylinder inside the bell housing, and an NB) and common to all of them was that the clutch pedal just felt weird. The bite point would never be in the same place so your shifts would be herky jerky no matter what you did.
>>
>>28921531
It hasn't happened to me in over a decade. It may have had weird clutch feel before but all I remember is suddenly being at a red light and no gear would engage so I'd have to push it off the road.
>>
>>28921536
embarrassing. no recovering from that
>>
>>28921538
Yeah, it sucks. Happened 3x, twice in the fucking city in the big commerce roads in rush hour and there my 130lb ass is pushing a miata off the road. Highly embarassing and it usually takes 1-2hr for the tow to get there. But eh whatever I like miatas and the failure is cheap to fix. I did a lot of clutch dump, burnout, donut, clutch kick, redline, and slam gears shit back then. I still do, but not as much. I don't think a slave cyl every 40k miles is normal I bought the car at 180k miles flood damaged, but I have heard it's a common failure with others.
Still, I'd rather a $50 part with clutch fluid replacement than a serious failure.
>>
>>28921547
lol love these little gay cars. i learned how to drive manual because i bought my first one and had to be at work in an hour, which was an hour away
i just started at a new company and they were asking me what car i drove and i said i had a miata for good times. kid next to me sold his nc on the west coast before moving east
>>
>>28920803
I don't believe so, I've ordered a new master/slave set as there is some moisture at the clutch pedal anyway

How important is the special washer that goes between the two PPF to transmission bolts? Just realized this NB doesn't have one, though it's weird there aren't witness marks where one would have been, and I'm finding a few on google images that don't have one either. My other lower trim NB does have one.
>>
I need a reminder that I don't need a manual every spring. I get itchy and restless while the weather is shit, but once it gets nice and I can drive like a retard in traffic the automatic miata proves itself by feeling like a race car with the paddle shifters, especially now I have the exhaust on and can hear the engine whirring. Now I just wish it had a DCT for faster shifting.
>>
Say herro to my little friend. 6AN fuel filter from DeatschWerks. This should be the last piece before I tear apart and toss all this OEM fuel line junk.
>>
Think I'll get an RF. A hard-top just sounds...nice. And my skin is too fucking white for the top down experience, I'll get melanoma.
>>
>>28922090
Is this on the transmission side of the PPF?
NA's used two large washers instead of this. NB's...use it as one big connected washer. Whatever you do, do not use BOTH.
I did that once...and I stripped the bolts...
I wasn't thinking and I had a bunch of spare bolts / washers / parts from when I bought another trans.
Does it matter? probably not. Your bolt probably just goes through the other side a little farther than other cars but that's not an issue I imagine.
>>
Anyone know what a possible burning/hot rubber smell could be from car? I thought I was burning clutch but now I'm not so sure. I thought tires but it doesn't really smell when I sniff the tires. I can see a power steering weep at the bottle but idk if that would even do it, it's not dripping anywhere. Nc miata manual
>>
>>28925001
It's like sort of fresh asphalt smell
>>
If there any value to some sort of flush for the NB five speed or is a drain and fill the vast majority of the fluid present? Finally changed the past owners fluid after getting the fill plug out and she's shifting much better, I wouldn't mind buying another bottle in a month to refresh the oil even further if there would be much of the old stuff left.

and on a side note, also did a thorough coolant flush of the old murky yellow, took 7 goes before it was clear and replaced with some green. I doubt it's a good flush in its 170,000km.
>>
>>28924666
>And my skin is too fucking white for the top down experience
I love not being white
>>
aviator glasses look cool as heck but they don't block dust from getting in my eyes as well as my other sunglasses when i drive with the top down
>>
>>28925123
Drain and fill is plenty. Unless something has gone catastrophically wrong you won't be getting combustion byproducts in your manual transmission fluid like you do engine oil, and it doesn't have any clutches in it to deposit friction material into the fluid like an automatic either. Now what I would recommend is a shifter rebuild and to change the gear oil that's separate from the main transmission fluid in the shifter turret as well, if you haven't already.
>>
>>28919928
The day is finally here.
Off to look at the 95M in a few hours.
Anything I should be especially on the lookout for? Maybe listening for excessive lifter valve tick that doesn't stop?

I know a lot of the old rubber is likely due for replacement, along with the stock shocks, bump stops, all the fluids etc.
>>
How is it this car feels so fast in the sun but sooo slow in the rain? It's like there's something dragging the car down and the modified exhaust noise combined with the transmission whine makes it feel so much worse. It really feels like that drag when you first start the car and the transmission is cold, but it's constant.

My local SCCA chapter has novice school days but it's just a couple events at the beginning of the year.
Is it considered bad form to go to one of the non-novice days if I've never driven on a track before or should I wait until 2027?

you can set the temp to the lowest possible, then it'll stay on
>>
>>28926816
Compressor short cycling is usually a low refrigerant charge, more rarely it can be a malfunctioning high or low pressure cutoff switch, or a bad fan causing a correctly operating high pressure switch to cut off the compressor when the high side pressure is too high as the fan isn't pulling heat out of the condenser.
>>
>>28926876
>>28926843
I will try these next time. The car is new to me so these are also new sounds. I did have the heater on high heat so next time I'll turn on the ac and set a low temp

NTA, but if it can be done for free with little to no risk, then I don't see the point in paying to do the same thing. If you were doing this as a job multiple times a week, then I'd say the tool would probably save you a lot of time and be worth it's weight in gold, but just for a home mechanic that'll likely only do the job once? Meh. Wrenchs and a vice grip is fine.
>>
>>28927557
That method is how I did it. Wrenches, paint markings and all. That's the proper way innit.
>>
>>28927001

I just did my belt for the first time and all I had to do was time the exhaust gear, put the belt over it, then hold the intake gear in place while putting the belt on completely.

I don't know why people over complicate it.
>>
>>28927549
Why spend $9 I don't have to when I already have two wrenches and a pair of vice grips, and it works without any downsides? The cams have hexes on them so you can hold them still while you torque the cam gear bolt, you won't hurt it.

I was thinking about a set of Koni Sports and new bump stops. I'd keep the stock springs. Rebuild and paint the brake calipers, add SS lines. Control arms, sway bars, differential bushings. Chassis bracing. Some new sound deadening. I want a fun comfortable ride, not a race car. If I'm honest with myself I'm never going to pay for track time.

What can I do about my NB's driver front corner sitting low and my passenger rear corner sitting high? I have new Koni shocks and factory Mazdaspeed springs, and I've already loosened and re-torqued all the control arm bushing bolts at ride height to make sure none of them could be twisted/binding then aligned it, where it had no problem meeting the Flyin' Miata alignment specs, evenly side to side. I don't want to go to coilovers for the ride height adjustment, I love how it rides and handles with this setup. It just bothers me how it sits diagonally.
>>
>>28928383
Uneducated guess here, not even sure if it would fit, but is it possible a front spring ended up in the rear and vice versa? What koni's are you running, are they adjustable?
>>
>>28928715
I made sure that wasn't the case with a dial caliper, both front springs are slightly thicker as they should be. They're the Koni special actives with an automatic internal damping adjustment that works off the velocity of the pushrod, they have only one ride height snap ring setting for the perch unlike some older Koni yellows that had multiple. I do have a 1/4" spacer I could put in to bandaid it a little but it definitely would need more spacer than that and the studs on the shock mount are only so long.
