I have an opportunity to get a 03 SRT10. It’s a 23yo car.
Manual. 87k miles.
Anything I should be looking at? Any viper owners here with advice?
It’ll just be a weekend car. Planning on Driving it less than 1000 miles a year.

Yeah, renting.

Medical and life insurance.

How much experience do you have driving high-powered RWD cars? If you plan on driving it like a grandpa then why are you even buying it, and if you are planning to hoon it without a ton of experience then you'll probably wrap it around a tree.
Save yourself $40,000 and get a Z3.

Theres atleast 2 viper owners here.
Ones running on euro time so you might have to wait for him to chime in.

Its a parts bin Chrysler with a Fuck You engine crammed into it. Biggest issie is sourcing drivetrain and body panels if anything fails.

Pretty low miles. No matter how pretty they look, check the date code on the tires and look for dryrot. It'll be a hefty bill, if they need replacement.

>Fuck You engine
HEY GUYSLET'S USE A TRUCK ENGINE FOR THIS NEW SPORTS CAR

DON'T WORRY THOUGH WE'LL JUST GET LAMBORGHINI TO FUCK WITH IT BEFOREHAND
>>

The Viper came before the trugg engines though, Dodge basically took the LA block specs, added two cylinders, and asked Lamborghini to help develop the aluminum castings for it.
Only after the Viper turned out to be a hit did they put it in a truck.

compilation videos of vipers losing traction at the right rear and crashing into the nearest car, telephone pole, tree, preschool, etc

I cant speak for pre gen 5, but like you said they are purely weekend cars. Idk why youd need our opinion on this.
You either like them enough to be an owner or you dont. Try to get a good test drive in and really see if its for you assuming you havent driven 1 before.
The drivers seat is very tight and not elbow friendly.
If you are over 6ft they probably arent the best option.

I had one for a couple years
1. Tires are unbelievably unbelievably expensive.
2. Power steering lines WILL need to be replaced with good braided stainless ones. If you do not do this, you will turn the wheel and get a faceful of burning PS fumes through the vents.
3. Rear diffs are dated in dog years. Expect expensive service.
4. If you're going to drive the shit out of it and it's an 06 or below, get a baffled oil pan, or engine goes kablooey.
5. You will make kids excited and happy by driving by them. They will jump up and down when they see you coming, they will want you to rev the engine and you should do this.
6. #5 will make it one of the favorite cars you own.

Not an owner but have seen enough people underestimate their skill with these high-horsepower low-weight deathtraps.
Sierra Cosworths were notorious for ending up in ditches and wrapped around trees because people couldn't handle the 200hp they had.

The '03 Vipers at least has ABS, but upgrade those brakes or at the very least stay well and truly on top of them maintenance-wise.

Tbf they're pretty easy to drive at 7/10, and 7/10 is like 15/10 for most civilian cars. The one time I took mine to a track I didn't even push hard enough to get the tires squealing and that was more than fast enough for me.
It's not a widowmaker like an old 911 turbo where you get snap oversteer out of nowhere, but rather just that it has so much grip for its weight that it allows absolute retards to drive very very fast and get away with very retarded things up to a very high speed. There's so much grip that the level of speed and level of stupidity you need to be at to lose control means you're going to die, like Joe Retard charging into a corner at full multiples of the maximum safe speed, car starts sliding at 90mph, Joe panics and lets off the throttle - Joe says hello to the wall with the wrong part of the car at twice the speed you can walk away from

Did your model car run a 7:01.3 or better Nurburgring in 2017?
>>

>euro time
That would be me. Can't say that gen 3 Vipers are my forte, since I have a gen 2 coupe, but I do know that the ignitition coils are a bitch to change in gen 3, since they are under the intake manifold. Need to change coilpacks or plug wires? Intake has to come off.
And apparently the wiper blades are unique to that car as well, so needless to say OEM blades are hard to find by now.
Aaand '03 Vipers still use the old clear Mopar power steering fluid that gen 1&2 also used, so do NOT mix in whatever new fluid some parts counter dumbass sells to you; they do not mix. Mopar doesn' t even make the old MS-5931 fluid anymore.

and im the non euro guy. OP, they are less practical than a motorcycle. the rear end will kick out very easily and can embarrass the fuck out of you if you do not understand how to drive such a car and not to panic and lift and stomp the brakes when it kicks out. put the best tires on the rear you can afford.

theyre not fast by todays standards. its like a 12 second car, and feels like it would run the same time towing a fucking house behind it. low revving but huge torque, it's a weird driving experience.

Make sure it's not burning oil and has healthy oil pressure.
Make sure the soft top and its function are in decent condition.
Make sure it hasn't been in a crash.
Make sure it doesn't have a bunch of powertrain or ecu mods.
That's about it.
You should find a lower mileage one though. The prices of vipers are very mileage insensitive. No point getting one with so many miles.
