>pollutes like a motherfucker >becomes unreliable if you don't want to breathe poisonWhat the fuck is the point of diesel in a passenger vehicle?
>ford powerjoketheres your problem
>>28904511Mazdas' diesel engines are very reliable and cheap, which is why they're disappearing in EU, cuz they shame the competition
>>28904511>mfw the diesel fag says X engine is reliable if you just break the law
>>28904511>What the fuck is the point of diesel in a passenger vehicle?Low end torque primarily, especially in the age when turbo technology wasn't quite there, but now you have 1.5L turbo gas engines that do all their work at 1600 rpm just like how a diesel spools up real quick, it's made diesel pointless in anything other than a ship, a train, or big truck, and I think even ships are running on LNG because the emissions are so poor when it burns diesel, even with exhaust scrubbing.
>>28904511Diesel has a fundamental predicament:If you keep burn temperature high, you get great efficiency and low soot emissions, but high NOx emissions. If you keep it low, it's the other way around.
>>28904511Big powerHuge torque Still have the PDF and CAT in placeStill meets the E5 norm>t.N57 CHAD
>>28904864Diesel still has greater energy density but releasing all that energy cleanly is a lot more difficult than gas
>>28904900>180HP>280 worksThat thing sucks, a modern 2.0T engine makes over 250HP and over 270 and it only has a cat and no dpf scr nonsense
>>28905016took a looong time to get to this point. turbo diesels had a head start against turbo petrols by at least 20 years.now the next big thing seems to be homogeneous charge compression ignition which as far as I can tell combines the best aspects of both diesel and petrol engines.
Back in my day diesel was cheap cause it was a byproduct.
>>28905017That would be extremely based if gas engines were built as strong as diesels to the point where knock isn't a bad thing, the only problem is that EPAfags have high compression due to NOx emissions
>>28905023>have Hate**
>>28904511Torque, because here in Europe you need to cross mountain passes across the year, reach locations with rough terrain, pack stuff for your road trip; so you need torque to make it across these scenarios carrying people and using A/C at the same time. So the reliable engine is diesel also to keep good mileage without denting the wallet at the gas station because fuel here is more expensive.
>>28905016Try over 550lbs-ft from 2000rpm to 3000rpm and 382hp@4200rpm. From a 3 liter engine that still does 26MPGs while cruising at 90.
>>28905061Can it pass emissions tho
>>28905016Also most petrol cars after 2020 are required to have an DPF in Europe.
>>28905062Just did back February. Everything is in place with the exception of the swirl flaps.
>>28904529>Mazdas' diesel engines are very reliable and cheapthey're horrible anon
>>28905023hcci isn't building a gas engine to be as atrong as a diesel, it's making software that can prevent predetonation in a premixed, compression ignition engine. instead of fuel injection happening around tdc like in a diesel, it happens at the ports like normal gasoline engines. the hard part is compressing that air fuel mixture till it combusts, without causing multiple combustion events. the amount of force caused by two flame fronts touching would blow any gas or diesel engine, or at least their head gasketmazda did hcci with skyactiv engines, but only in cruising conditions, it's too hard (for now) in variable conditions
>>28905195Not the WL-T
>>28905266>Skyactiv Z>>28905195She's a beauty, probably the most advanced you can buy in a passenger car right nowhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c237iigtXEE
>>28904511We need to return to coal-fired power plants ASAP.
>>28904511Volvo 5-cylinder diesel is bulletproof, and there is obviously the legendary 1.9 TDI. Generally a bad diesel is worse than a bad petrol, but good diesel is even better than a good petrol, they last forever.
>>28904511>What the fuck is the point of diesel in a passenger vehicle? Historically, Western Yurostanis (especially Marsh Germans a.k.a. Dutch) tow(ed) campers with their daily-driver shitboxes, so they need(ed) the extra grunt. >>28904890There's a way to bypass that, but no company has gone the distance, because it's an absolute PITA. If you design a dual-fuel system which injects a small amount of LPG alongside the diesel, you can burn off the excess O2 (which combines into NOx when running lean) without creating soot or lowering compression. Only problem is, you now have to fill up with two fuels, so your price/performance ratio takes a plunge.
>>28904511in europe diesel used to be cheaper than gas so people thought it was the "economic" optionnow that diesel is much more expensive than gas there is actually no reason (except easier tax fraud)
>>28904511>What the fuck is the point of diesel in a passenger vehicle?Fuel economy, torque and low CO2 emissions
>>28904511>pollutes like a motherfuckerAnd?>becomes unreliable if you don't want to breathe poisonSo don't breathe, problem solved
