Dealer markup hurt it.It's a great driving car, safe, 4-doors, manual, mostly reliable. If you don't NEED a real backseat, it's hard to compete with a BRZ, Miatas, Mustangs, etc, for the same price or cheaper. But if you NEED a backseat, your only real competition is the WRX (which is still pretty good and significantly cheaper but doesn't drive nearly as well) and the GR Corolla which is getting rave reviews but I think people say the ride quality is kind of shit. It's in a weird spot because there's not a lot of "enthusiasts who want a good DD that's also safe and I can throw my toddler in the backseat of". If the Chevy SS still existed this thing would be completely fucked.
