I’ve driven reasonable cars my whole life. My last three were a VW golf, a Honda civic, and another VW golf.

Driving nicer cars like the Aston Martin DBX, Porsche 911, and even the humble Audi a3 has given me a hunger for a little more refinement.

I so badly want to buy an s3/s5 and I can afford it, but I think it’d be a terrible decision given I just put $6k into my VW’s suspension and brakes at 140k miles.

What do you do when you’ve got the seven year itch? Put on a new exhaust?

I can't relate. Was (am?) a rich kid, everyone around me has top-trim German cars and all I want to do is spin tires in my 110hp miata. I've had miatas 12 years and they don't get old to me.
If what you want is that "solid" NVH feel and nice interior materials, then get a car like that (an A3 would do fine).
If what you want is the "aura" of driving a fancy car then an exhaust will only make your shitbox feel worse to you as your suspension clearly has.
Do you like these cars for the performance or the refinement?

Why not both?

That was the answer I expected, and the correct one. But maybe I could steer OP in the right direction if he had a preference and acknowledged it.

Biggest question you gotta ask is do you want comfy or do you want race car, as they're *generally* mutually exclusive. S3/5 would be nice, but they're fat, low, and wide. You're going to feel every rock chip and ding right in the soul.

The other option is 300whp shitbox golf. It'd be a lot of work, ecu flash/swap, a hand full of bolt ons, and some dyno time but it can be done. It will just ride like a boy racer mobile.

Honestly I'd do the latter but I'm cheap.

I'm getting old enough (38) that I'm starting to appreciate features like heated seats and a good stereo just as much as horsepower, and while I'd like refinement, I'm trying to find that happy medium between a daily driver and something a little sportier.
