>Costs 10K more than MX5>Comes only with a heater and a casette deck as standard. Everything else is an optional extra.Seriously how did BMW get away selling Z3 for that much more than MX5?
>>28909160>"luxury" brands offer poor value for the money newWho knew? It's different now that you've been able to pick them up for dirt cheap for years, but you know that nobody walking into a BMW dealer in the '90s to buy a Z3 at full MSRP was even considering a Miata.
>>28909160They got away with it because BMW was BMW and Mazda was Mazda
>>28909160How did Porsche get away with selling this for even more than a Z3?
>>28909160A base MX-5 in 1995 did not come with a radio
>>28909199The badge mogs the Z3 in prestige and you can say the engine is in the back (middle).>inb4 typical /o/ BMW-Porsche sperging/IMS/maccas etcPerformance isn't even a factor here. Think from the eyes of a yuppie in the '90s with a lot of money, that knows little of cars but knows a lot about status. Bond might have driven a Z3, sure, but you might've had neighbors with a cheap 318ti or an older 525i. Porsche, especially in the '90s, avoided that issue (the odd autist with a "cheap" 914, 924 or even aircooled "old" 911/912 at the time was still far and few in between).
>>28909160Honestly, I love my NA, but I'm always shocked to find out that Mazda got away with selling them for £38,000 when adjusted for inflation, which is nearly the exact same price that you can buy a top spec Homura ND for now. Crazy.>A base 2.8 Z3 was £55,000 when adjusted for inflationAlso a tough pill to swallow.
>>28909160>cassette playerHigh class rate
>>28909160You need more?
>>28909217anon, if you normalize everything to something that tracks real inflation (gold, real estate, etc) vs real salaries, you’ll see that cars like that were relatively much more affordable.>tldr; when houses only cost 3 years’ salary at 3% APR instead of 15 years at 7% it turns out you can afford a lot more stuff.
>>28909245I am fully aware of that, my surprise comes more from the material cost and manufacturing complexity side of things. A modern day ND and a 90's tincan work out to roughly the same value within their relative timeframes, and I find it interesting and somewhat surprising. Makes me wonder what kind of margins the original cars were working with, and how much of a difference there would be if the NA were to be produced alongside the ND today.
>>28909160Imagine wanting to drive a mozzduh
>>28909160You must be a euro, in the U.S. they had air conditioning, ABS, dual airbags, central locking, power-adjustable driver's seat, anti-theft system, and stereo in the standard package.
>>28909160Mercedes got away with selling my 1994 SL500 for 105k.My 1994 S500 LWB was $95k yet it has the same drivetrain and loads more equipment just not the hydraulic roof.I think 2 seat convertibles are seen as toys and priced extra because of it. The Miata was a toy trying to pass as an economy car which was uniquely brilliant. They really did such a good job with those cars.
