What are the best, /o/ approved OBD2 scaners to analyze the telemetry data of our cars?

What is less cucked way, a bluetooth dongle? A tablet? A control remote?

I just ordered a Foxwell (chinese) handheld OBD scanner (NT530 plus) with "bmw mini rolls royce" software for my r53 mini. Reportedly does all the OBD2 stuff plus some BMW specific things. It cost $160. Because people on the forums have had success with it and it's relatively cheap.
Advanced functions are manufacturer-specific.
There are rapidly changing expensive scanners shops use which read and edit most manufacturers' specific software. It is difficult to be totally up to date on these as there are many brands and new models. You can pay around $1000 or more for that.
Best is to start with your model of car and ask on forums what is best for that car.
For my 1994 Mercedes (one of the first cars to use CANBUS, before OBD2, the most cost effective option was a chinese reproduction STAR C3 multiplexer paired with an old laptop with an RS232 serial port. That setup cost me around $800 but in theory does all Mercedes up until the past couple of years.
If you just want basic info the cheapest corded or bluetooth ELM327 with any OBD2 reader app will read OBD2 codes like the ones that tell you your gas cap is bad or your cat/o2 sensor is bad.

Every YT mechanic is seemingly shilling Topdon. What's the skinny? Anyone here have experience?

I use the harbor freight one. Better than using an ELM327.

>Cheap plugin for clearing codes
>Bluetooth/Wireless if you're linking a display for monitoring/diagnostic purposes
>Invest in something with quality if you're doing some proper tuning and messing with manufacturer settings - preferably wired - you do not want to risk a bad packet/disconnect because someone else wants to dick around on your laptop while you're not looking.

My pops who is addicted to watching youtube mechanics bought one and it catastrophically failed 1 month after the 1 year warranty. I would pass.

This + Torque Pro works pretty gud for me. I wish it did bi-directional shit but whatever. I like a bunch of pages of customizable live data on my phone vs having to scroll around on a shitty hand held display.

Is he ok?

obdlink mx+ if you want a proper full protocol capable scanner and guaranteed high speeds...most any car now needs plug adapters to get specific sensors/computer data too, at least from something like this, so a multi harness.
If you want to spend big boy money for full sensor scan data and less hassle the hptuners interface piped through a laptop, which can be a cheap one, is quality. Or whichever tuner programming kits support your vehicle.
If you want actual oem grade "scanner" (ecu param access) you need to start with those chinese kits that are replicating the mechanics shop stuff.

Of course my own experience is limited to basic use and a handful of cars. I'm sure Car X Y or Z can read nearly every ecu+pcm param from a simple elm327 chip without hassle, without digging into PID list programming, etc., but I haven't seen it in the 15 years of trying.
