How's the Mazda3 fare against the Civic/Corolla? Wanting to buy a reliable car, maybe used, and Honda/Toyota is generally more expensive in that market. Also I think they look better. I've heard good things about them but my mechanic friend told me today that they are shit.

Its a bit sportier, better looking and has better interior but is less practical. I've driven one and liked it but it doesn't get same mpg and the slushbox is a slushbox.

I wouldn't consider a NEW shitbox without it being a hybrid, the advantages make the entire drivetrain better. Transmission on hybrids is better, 4 cylinder with instant torque, ability to drive with the engine off, instant AC/heat because it's electric/part electric, and then using 40% less gas.I would consider only a civic hybrid, corolla hybrid, corolla cross hybrid or ford maverick hybrid
I wouldn't consider any NEW shitbox if the brand starts with M
