My dad has abandoned a '65 Mustang similar to picrel (resto with GT350 dress-up) in my garage and it has been sitting there for about 3 years now. If he's not going to come get it or work on it then I've decided that I'm going to enjoy it instead, but I don't have much experience with cars this old. Money is not a huge issue, just need some help creating a to-do list before it's ready to start after sitting for so long.

>Fuel
It was put away wet so I'm thinking first drain the tank, replace the in-line fuel filter, replace fuel hoses, and clean/rebuild/replace the carb. The carb appears to have an electric choke so no real worries about fiddling with that when I go to start it
>Engine
Oil looks fine from the dipstick, but I'll probably go ahead and do a full oil change just because I don't actually know when it was done last
>Battery
Hasn't been on a tender so pretty much guaranteed shot. Electrical issues are the reason it was parked in the first place, but to my knowledge that issue was unrelated to the battery as the battery was basically new when parked judging by the date on it.

Anything obvious that I'm missing? I figure that the electrical issue he was having will make itself apparent either once it's going or once it is ready to start. Mostly I just don't want to hit the key and fuck up a car that isn't mine because I forgot to do something that should've been obvious.

Its not a bicycle you fucking dipshit.
Youre talking about felony grand theft auto.
>>
>>28913183
yes drain the fuel and flush new fuel through it then chg the filter but I wouldnt bother with replacing all the hose unless it's just obviously old.
cylinders are probably dry af so pull the plugs and spray some marvel mystery oil in each one and let it sit for a few hours to coat the cylinder walls.
change brake fluid and purge brakes
get a $10 battery disconnect switch so youre not dealing with constant parasitic draw while youre figuring it out
check tire dates so you dont end up as a meme

Enjoyer of old shitboxes here. You're on the right track. If it has gas and oil, put a jumper on it and give it a crank first. If he stored it with a strong hit of fuel stabilizer or ethanol free gas, there's an outside chance it'll light off. But otherwise yeah, do that stuff.

Also that anon is right, how's the relationship with pops?
>>
>>28913190
If that's how you think it would go down then you really should try to repair your relationship with your father. As I said the car has been functionally abandoned for 3 years and it has gotten to the point where I've stopped asking him to come get it because he always just says he has nowhere to put it.
>>28913202
Yeah tires are visibly flat and dryrotted so that's on the list by default. Good call on the mystery oil, might go ahead and change the plugs while I'm there. Hoses didn't appear to be in bad shape so yeah I'll probably skip those.

Top it off with some fresh, replace the battery, and crank it. You might not have to do any of that shit since it's only been 3 years.

>>28913183
...but what does your dad say?
>>
>>28913226
>questions my relationship with my father
>his own father ignores his requests to remove the vehicle.
>is asking random people on the internet for advice on the vehicle instead of the owner (his dad).

You've proven the validity of my original post multiple times itt.
Youre a shitbag
If you think that seizing possession of a $20k-$50k vehicle is acceptable than i understand why your father ignores you.
Are you going to register it and insure it before you take it out on the road?
Of course not because this is a bait thread and said car doesnt even exist.
>>
>>28913249
I'm no more seizing it then you would seize a turd your neighbor's dog took in your yard. It's in MY garage, I would like to have it out of my garage or at least justify it living in my garage by it being more than a 2 ton paperweight.
The car is registered on a classic plate and insured. Not that you give a fuck.
>>
>>28913258
NTA, but it would be cool if you and your dad could do it together. Maybe he'll probably give it to you afterwards. Storybook moment. lol.
>>
>>28913258
Ya that's not how it works little kid.
You didn't have a contract stating storage fees that are now overdue. You wilfully provided your garage for storage.
Even if you had a legal claim to take possession, its theft if you drove it before said claim is completed by the courts.

Its not your car.
If you dont have permission from your father to drive it then its theft.

Go ahead and drive it.
Be sure to post pics after you spin out because you had no clue what to do with overseer in a V8 because you've only driven 4 banger fwd shitboxes.

>you had no clue what to do with overseer in a V8 because you've only driven 4 banger fwd shitboxes
lmao okay now I know you're trolling. I guess I didn't say this, but I've driven the car before and it is fucking slow. It's a stock 289.
You're right though, I'm going to go draft a storage contract right now for space in my garage and go serve it to my father. Fuck off retard.
>>
>>28913268
That would be cool. I'd love to fix it together. To this point his "plan" for addressing it has always involved having it towed to a shop, but that has never materialized and I'm tired of nagging him about it. Maybe he'd go for a father-son project type deal though especially if there is a plan for where to start on it.
>>
>>28913183
Your a lucky mf but ask your pops if he alright with you restoring his car better yet to keep

What a fucking retard.
Where did i mention "speed" or "fast"?
Ive had multiple 1st gen mustangs. Still have one 1st gen and multiple other gen mustangs.
A bone stock 289 will side step all day long because theres no weight in the ass end. Its a 2,800 pound car with 2/3rds of that over the front wheels. Thus the OVERSTEER comment.

>b-b-but I drove it once!!!
Its a little different when youre not sitting on daddy's lap.
Go wrap it around a tree, I dont give a shit.
Dumbfuck.
>draft a storage contract right now for space in my garage and go serve it to my father.
Great relationship you have with your father.
>>
I appreciate the serious responses and the entertainment from the seething retard as well. I'll talk to him one more time about it and see if he'd be down to try and fix it together. If not I'll fix it myself or at least roll it into the yard so I can have my fuckin garage back.

Yeah, man. Some project with the old man is probably worth more than the car. Not to get all grim, but you never know when your old man will be gone.

If someone left a sweet fastback in MY GARAGE, it's getting worked on and driven.

Turn it into an Eleanor rep. Boomers love that shit, he'll take it away in no time.

Drain the gas tank and lines. Check the carb bowl for gas varnish. Unless it's nasty I'd just fill the tank up to 1/4 and do a bottle of redline or techron. The PEA will eat up any light varnish. Do that for 3 or 4 tanks. I've seen gas sit for 3 years and the car will fire right up and seen it varnish in 6 months. Its storage conditions, environment and how sealed the system is. Carbs typically aren't sealed at all lol. If it is evaporated and varnished in the carb, I'd rebuild. A gallon of carb dip and a rebuild kit would only set you back $40-$50.

Then just do a full fluid swap. I'd do a brake fluid flush along with oil and coolant. Beyond that, if she ran when she was parked, and it's been stored indoors for only 3 years, I don't see why it wouldn't start and run just fine after some babying the carb to get fresh gas through the whole system. If you want to do a full tune up while you're at it, go for it. $200 on top for everything being fresh and new.

That was one of Clint's basedest movies

Gone in 60 seconds is a 1974 movie.
You guys will be discussing other shite re-makes shortly.

The original is borderline unwatchable.
