I have an opportunity to acquire a 91 850i. It’s a 35yo carI’ll just be a weekend car. Is this v12 problematic?I hear these models were built well. No plastic or cheap rubber.

The V12 is actually surprisingly stout. Your main enemies will be general old car issues, the sheer number of maintenance items (lol dual redundant fuel systems and three ECUs) and model specific parts being annoyingly expensive.If you can deal with it then it's basically the ultimate croozer, slower than you think it is but enormously comfortable and stable and god is it a good looking car.

4hp series has a problem with the shaft seals. As they degrade, they will allow the drive and reverse clutch packs to simultaneously engage and cause immediate failure of the clutch pack A, resulting in no forward drive gears. Do not rev the engine in park or neutral until you know the shaft seals have been replaced with Teflon seals, or modifications have been made to let the pressure bleed off.
