You can go a bit further out though to somewhere like Spring Hill and park on the street all day for free, you'll just need to walk back to the CBD for a bit. I've done that if I'm unwilling to pay for parking. I think West End has some free parking too but I see so many scummy people there that I don't even like driving through, let alone parking there.
