The original car is designed with certain design language, in this case it's all rounded of corners, then the corporate face moves on and a new, angular, hard edged front end is glued to the now outdated car.

The W212 was designed with sharp edges and creases, yet they rounded it all off with "organic" styling, gave it a generic set of headlights and also started to throw the awful big-star grille on instead of the classic radiator grille and hood star (still available, but rare and not on 99% of factory sold models).I'd say this was the last decent era of MB before they entirely lost the plot.
