Lads, I want to run taller tires on my old IS350 because roads are shit and I like a smooth ride.
How close can you get to the upper ball joint nut and not have issues?
The gap is 1.1in currently.
With a taller tire, the gap would shrink to 0.6in or about 5/8in.
Would that 5/8 gap have issues?

I ran the suspension through its complete travel range & the 1.1in gap doesn't change.
I checked wheel clearances at full lock in both directions and it has plenty of room. Fender gap is huge so no issues with bumps causing a tire to rub the upper fender well

Not with these prices.

bc you overpaid for your shitbox

That's plenty and no you won't have issues.
>>
That measurement would stay static in motion. If you were really worried, you could massage the bolt with an angle grinder to gain a few millimeters.

Alternatively, you could go to a 16" or a 17" wheel to gain more sidewall cushioning and retain the OEM rolling diameter.

That's a fucking stupid tire size. What's the point of a rubber band that skinny? This shit killed the sedan.
>>

>you won't have issues
Correction, fitment and motion wise no but the speedo will be slightly off.

>but the speedo will be slightly off.
The taller tire should slow down my speedo by 2mph.
Funny enough, my speedo reads 2mph too fast

>>28916923
I can afford tires.
I'm just not gonna blow $1,300 assuming I might have to throw away the tires if they don't fit.
>>
>>28916903
>roads are shit and I like a smooth ride.
slightly taller tires will make no difference lol
>>
>>28916903
Try a lower psi first, acceleration and mpgs will suffer but if you can live with that and the ride is good you'll be set.
>>
>>28916966
Adding 1in to tire height causes a huge change in ride quality anon.
I had a 295/30R18 then a 295/35R18 same tire.
35 side wall had way better ride comfort.
>>
>>28916966
your tire effectively functions as a second spring
taller sidewall = more travel = softer rate for a given pressure
>>
>>28916903
remember, tired expand when they rotate, so it might rub.15mm might be enough clearance.

you're better off simply finding a softer tire in the same size
you can also get a smaller diameter wheel with more sidewall in the tire.
if you just get a bigger tire your acceleration will suffer and your speedo will be off as fuck, including your odometer

>14mm increase in sidewall
there's no way you could detect any meaningful difference
>>
>>28917676
It's the volume of air in the tire that matters
295/30R18 holds 1205in^3
295/35R18 holds 1378 in^3
A 14% increase would absolutely be noticable

>>28916904
>torsion beam rear axle
Not even fat tires will stop those cars from crashing over bumps.
>>
>>28917676
I guess Europeans are really bad at math.
A 295/35r18 is 1 inch taller (25mm) than a 295/30R18

>>28917446
The car already has fairly soft touring tires.
>>
Replaced fucked up 19" with 18 for summer and 17 for winter on my Focus. Huge difference.
If you can fit and afford smaller rims and want more comfort, do it.

That looks like it's part of the wheel hub so it won't move much, if at all, relative to the tyre.
But you're better off downsizing the wheel itself as you'll be able to get much more sidewall compared to just sticking with these wheels. Run the smallest size that can fit over the stock brakes. Since it's Toyota they may have smaller alloys from another model that may fit over as the PCD will be the same across every full size sedan model, but check the offset and all that first. Otherwise, say fuck it and just run steelies.

hnnng, what profile are they again? i think i asked this before but i forgot lel.

it's 215/70R15, and my van is 225/75R15
just spent all day fucking with the front doors and the brake calipers and I think she's finally okay again, I just really hope I got the bearing preload set properly
>>
>>28917840
nice. found out my engine really likes timing, had originally set it to 12 and it'd start getting hot on the highway. runs even better at 16 now, gonna see if it likes even more timing still.
>>
>>28917892
I just hope I tightened those damn bearings right
>>
>>28916903
0.6" fully inflated brand new tires? should be fine, that nut moves with the tire when you hit bumps etc, the tire won't deform that much with speed or hitting a bump, and as it wears you'll just get more clearance.

the second number in a tire size is the ratio of tread width to sidewall height

>>28917708
this is a good point, though
>>
>>28918352
I know what aspect ratios are.
But the overall diameter differences between those tires is 25 mm.
Not 14mm
But I guess forcing Europeans to use inches (wheel size is a nice humiliation ritual.
>>
>>28917840
it's not only tires, those old cars have way longer suspension travel than modern ones.
>>
>>28917840
>I just really hope I got the bearing preload set properly

Anon, preload on tapered bearing is pretty easy.
Do the recommended torque setting while rotating, then back of per instructions to line up hole. I like to put the wheel back on at this time and check for slop at the 12 & 6 O'clock position. If there is just hand tighten the nut til the slop is gone, cotter pin it. It rides like glass after.
