Yesterday I had my first car crash and breakdown.

The car is drivable and the damage overall was medium, plus the other guys insurance company reached out and stated that they were liable and offered to handle my claim.
However my current insurance company told me that they were willing to waive my voluntary excess and were willing to give me a hire car even though it wasn't stated in my policy.

I still went with the third party insurer, but im wondering if I made the right choice?

Never trust your own insurance company and only make a claim if it's completely necessary.
Behind the scenes they keep a very complete history of the times you called them and they do that for a reason.

I recently had to make a claim, a third party was at fault. Policy was an extra £1000 the following year.
They probably spent £5000 fixing my car.

Its fairly necessary. my front reg plate got crushed and cracked to the point where it was literally hanging on by one screw. That and my tailgate lock was broken so I can't securely lock the trunk/boot properly.

Imagine pay Mr shekelberg a monthly fee in the hope that he might give some of it back one day if you do something stupid or get unlucky

Not even a fender bender then.
Boomer here.
I had someone shoot a front number plate of mine, broke the plastic bumper behind it too.
I bet five minutes with a pry bar and a few choice words will get the trunk working.
