I can pick between a Suzuki Ignis 2005 or an Impreza RX 2008, both seem to be in working condition and roughly £1000.

That Impreza is a better driver's car (more power, wishbones rear). I had a USDM 2.5L one until last year.
I do not know enough about the NA 2.0L to say if it's reliable but I've heard they're stronger than the 2.5 due to thicker cylinder walls.
I don't know how hard parts are to get for these where you live.
I'm assuming the Subaru will have much higher insurance.
I really like that Impreza but the Suzuki will probably cost less to keep, maybe.

The only thing which puts me off the Impreza is the shape. The Ignis' box just looks way comfier to sit in.

It grows on you. I initially hated the way it looked and got it because it was the best manual non-FWD car I could afford at the time.
But when it finally got towed away last week I got all teary-eyed. It was kinda cute.

Not really about looks as much as comfort, idk why every modern hatchback has the exact same dimensions with zero headroom in the back.

I thought it was very comfortable, maybe too comfortable. But, I had a '90s miata before and have another '90s miata now and I think they're comfortable too so idk. I don't feel comfortable in huge SUVs made for fat people, I wanna be bolstered in down low.

>Suzuki i4
>Subaru flat 4
This is the most obvious reliability vs performance decision I've ever seen.
I'd choose the Suzuki. The only time I'd get a boxer would be if it were a bike or if I didn't have to pay for the maintenance.
