>>28923985It is unironically the best setup. I got to drive one of the few Rover SD1 V8 final year models imported into the US on a rally course. Had a GM origin pushrod V8 and all. It felt like the pure distillation of the white man. Owner was some Mexican trains autist who'd also installed lifted rally air suspension on it and was dailying a Honda Crosstour with an aftermarket turbo and air suspension.
>>28923990I live in California and still see these constantly, the sedan versions at least. No road salt and very little snow here so the bodies last indefinitely. They're nearly 50 years old but many of them still look better than W203 C-Classes. Some hope for the brand was regained with the W204 being built like a vault and plush but the W205 was a plastic piece of shit and subsequent models have been offensively bad. Lexus, VAG or even fucking Genesis provide more old Mercedes feels than Mercedes now.

>>28924013Mercedes had a few models that were developed when they were flush with cash like the W204 and subsequent coupe and SUV derivatives and the W212 & W222, but apart from those, the vehicles are now designed to be as cheap to manufacture as possible with no build quality care, just styling and initial tech performance. They don't do those half a million mile stress benchmarks anymore.

My gf drove it for a few months with 1/5th of its correct oil capacity and no oil at one point around 180k milesand it still took me to 230k miles before it catastrophically shit the bed. Electronics were constantly fucked up though. Drivetrain electronics and lighting still worked so that's really all that matters.
