IDEK if boats are allowed here. I know plenty of cars but not much on boats
>20.5" 1980 hydrosport kevlar hull
>2004 johnson 2 stroke 150 hp carbed
>comes with trailer
>$5000
would you buy?
>>

I think a b/o/at thread would be pretty good anon.

>Would I buy?

I already have 2 boats, so my bases are covered but I'm interested in that 150 HP johnson two stroke. They're pretty neat. 5 grand isn't a bad deal on it either if you have a place to keep it, something to tow it with, and time to take it out on the water and actually enjoy it. Half the guys I know take theirs out less and less when they get a bigger boat like that vs a 14-18 footer because of the logistics of it. Or maybe because they could only afford them when they got older and have less drive to get out anyways.

>2 stroke
if you can avoid it do. boat engines and snowmobiles, go 4stroke. they are often twice the weight, twice the displacement, half the hp but they are also twice the grunt and half the problems. i changed to 4 stroke on both my boat and snowmobile, you just cant imagine how much more torque they got and they always start.

you know what they say
bust
out
another
thousand

Buddy of mine has a 1968 31' Chris Craft Commander with a Chevy 327.
>>
Op here
Decided to pass on the boat. Original 80 gal tank cracked and he replaced it with 2 12 gallon tanks. He did it well but i would like to have more range than that. And the horses are lower than the original engine

I live on the gulf so it's not bad to get good size

How much does it matter on a boat? Only ever driven 4 stroke boats so have no idea
>>
>>28925834
and that's something I heard at least 20+ years ago as a child, gotta be brutal now

>How much does it matter on a boat? Only ever driven 4 stroke boats so have no idea

Not the other guy but even in my thirdie country a lot of people are moving to 4 strokes. It's really only small scale fisher men who stick to 2 strokes and they often run a single 75-95 on a pirogue. If you are powering from A to B and then shutting her off to dropline or jig fish then a 2 stroke is fine. They hate trolling though. If you intend to do any slow speed anything for even 10% of your time on water a 4 stroke is definitely the way to go. Paying guests on board? 4 stroke again.

2 strokes do sound godly though. And if for a personal craft I would focus more on condition rather than what cycle it runs. Normally in my country if you buy a boat you generally want to re engine it because everyone hacks away at any sort of maintenance and repair. 2 strokes generally require less maintenance but have a shorter useful life.

That's cool, owning a boat with a little interior space is my dream.
>>
bikes, boats, etc seems like things that are really only worth it if you live in a place that's warm year-round

buying a boat to have it sit in a dry dock for 6 months of the year sounds awful
>>
>>28926170
I live in sw florida so yeah i could take out a boat literally almost every day of the year
>>
>>28926170
For us snowcucks, there is nothing we can do outside all year long. People with the money have snow + winter hobbies, like snowmobile for the winter and boat for the warm months.
>>
>>28926044
people get around with 2strokes but there is always something with them. hard to start, if you troll at slow speed they dont like that, smell, noise, oiling issues, plugs fauling... with a 4 stroke its like driving a car. you get in it turn the key and off you go.

>1980 HULL WITH PROBABLE ROTTING OUT TRANSOM AND STRINGERS.
>JOHNSON EVINRUDE CARB ENGINE GOOD BUT REMEMBER PARTS WILL BE HADER TO FIND SINCE THEY ARE NO MORE.

A 20 ft boat is good start but get something like a mako or a robalo that's more modern and not constructed with older materials that have perished.
as for engines mercury or a yamaha if 2 strokes is your desired choice.
>ENGINES TO AVOID.
>evinrude and johnson ficht ram injection models.
>Yamaha Hpdi 150hp-300hp.
>Mercruiser or any typical inboard style boat
>force outboards and chrysler outboards

This model 150hp Johnsen is not bad however it has the dreaded OIS ignition or the optical eye which is a pain to repair.

the big block v6 200hp-250hp do not have it

Two strokes are good motors, but they are becoming obsolete, fourstrokes are good for bigger boats that go offshore so a boat like the one in op is not really going to have much better improvement except for fuel economy.

Thoughts on jet boats like Yamahas?
>>
>>28928060
If you do want one get one as new as possible otherwise stick with an outboard powered boat.
>>
>>28925601
>would you buy?
You didn't provide any information on the intended purpose.
>>2004 johnson 2 stroke 150 hp carbed
If you're going 2 stroke there is but one choice.
>>
>>28928140
Nah I'd rather have a v-drive. I'm tryna wakeboard and tow. The Yamahas caught my eye because they have a forward facing passenger seat. Most ski boats just have a bench seat facing the aft.

Lots of space for fishing and the fuel tank has its own compartment so dont have to cut open floors when ever it fails or shits the bed.

And i have an extra side console, a ttop and a fly bridge for cast net fishing.
If your looking for something with seats a radio and a built in cooler, then this is not the boat for you.

And here i thought this thread would get archived or 404’d.

Classic old school commercial fishing and lobster trapping hull just like my 25 parker sou’ wester , Loved by all the old white crackers deep in the everglades.

>that boat was desired back in the 70’s and 80’s for those that participated in smuggling bails of weed or square grouper through the gulf through the Everglades.

Big block 3.0 liters were better than the 2.5 racing engines with the exception of the 280 ros mercury racing exclusive outboard.

why is this 2007 150hp yamaha overheating ??
When it received a full service not that long ago??
>>
>>28925601
It's not worth paying any amount of money for a boat built with wood (pretty much anything built before the late 90's) nowadays unless you're really down to rebuild it. I have a Johnson 150 two stroke, they are alright but make sure to compression test. They also have plastic carbs so can't use seafoam and if they decide to warp there's nothing you can do but sand down the mating surfaces between the carb body and bowl, since finding new ones is pretty tricky
