>>28935638over the years i've seen the mentality be "if my car is bigger than everyone else's on the road then I'll be safe and the other person will be dead instead of me." instead of trying to learn how to drive. We need mass transit more than ever.

>>28935978Thank You. We worked and fought hard to get there.
>>28934814Makes me want to get a Smart car, wrap it reflective orange, put fuckhuge SOLAS stripes to make it look like a rolling traffic cone, and watch modern truck and SUV safety interventions slam on the brakes the moment they approach the little bastard.
>>28935987This actually sounds genius if it works.
>>28935990The current trial of FD1404 SOLAS causes autopilot Teslas to maintain ten car lengths away from my car, and Tesla-style ADAS suites are the future of modern cars in the 2030s. They assume the driver is retarded and the systems think it's going to slam into a traffic barrier. It's half right.I kinda want a backup car, and I also want a microcar. Microcar waves tend to only pop up every 30-50 years and they never show up the same way that they used to. I think I need to spring for a C453 very soon before they stop being cheap and become collectible instead. On top of that, people have already done the Little Tykes wrap on a Smart car. These things are novelties in North America. Turning one into a traffic cone would be treated the same way as a funny novelty.
>>28935998Got a pic of your SOLAS setup? How illegal is it?
>>28936008This is an old photo, but the spoiler is totally covered in SOLAS. I keep adding more tape to it as the car ages. The opaque parts of the back glass has it too. The rear bumper has Orafol V98 in red that conforms to the curves of the rear bumper.>legalityAdding extra retroreflectors that supplement the minimum legal requirements are not illegal, otherwise vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances that plaster the back with reflective vinyl would be illegal. It doesn't look like an emergency vehicle, so that interpretation doesn't work either.I've never been pulled over for this and I keep adding more tape, it just looks like a beater car that's owned by someone that doesn't want to get hit. Given the car is 16 years old, if someone even farts on the sheet metal, it'll get totalled.
>>28935948>We need mass transit more than ever.go to hell, we need eugenics.

>>28936041Last I got seriously tailgated was about October of 2024, and before that, February of 2022. It turned from several times per drive (the 3 is too low for modern hood heights) to basically nearly unheard of. It's really hard to miss. If I forget where I parked, I can spot my car over 1500 feet away just by looking for the most reflective flashbang on the lot.The closest guy that nearly sideswiped my car in a lifted Jeep ended up getting instantly pulled over by a state trooper. Those are the moments where I wish I just ate the cost on a dashcam. Instead, I bought the Tape.
>>28934822>>28935451>Imagine never getting the opportunity to date a tall womenY'all are missing out But ya, girls are dumb with money and buy giant trucks they can't afford. They say "in a crash I'd win"
>>28936061>They say "in a crash I'd win"But what about economic crash? The only way to win against an economic crash is to not have debt. The 2020s decade is defined by only one consistent factor, which is instability. If people lock down a 6-9 year loan when their life gets flipped upside down every 2-4 years, they're really just renting the vehicle from the bank.
>>28936022Apparently this is the final boss of reflective tape. Never seen a more expensive roll of tape before.
>>28936079I totally avoid 3M, because they are not monolayer tapes. Weather will degrade the air gap layer of 3M's bilayer tape. I've tried a lot of them and they don't match the use case. It's for box trucks and road signs where there's no curves. The tape will delaminate on anything with curves.I'm very insistent on making sure anyone that commits to SOLAS tape only buys monolayer Orafol/Oralite tapes. It's the difference between having to reapply tape every few years and never having to do it ever again.
>>28936080Maybe it's all futile. I just read this online: >The problem with SOLAS / V82 tape is that it has a VERY tight return beam angle (around 1° to 3° at its very brightest, and then the intensity falls off very quickly). This is what makes it so bright. Most people are putting the tape on their car, holding a flashlight up, and taking a picture on their phone. The problem with this is that the flashlight is being held right next to the phone, which falls within that 'tight bright beam' and appears super bright. BUT, when someone is driving behind you, their eyeballs are like 3ft to 5ft HIGHER than the source of the light (the headlights); therefore, they fall far outside that 'tight bright beam.' (Remember, retroreflective tape reflects light back to the SOURCE of the light, aka the headlights, not to your eyeballs.)
>>28936079>Not using m82Anon......
>>28936086i saw that same reddit thread just now lol. of course if they're close (like 1 car length) they're probably not gonna see it. but start picking up speed and distances between vehicles increase and that's where it shines since they get far enough that their eyes fall into the cutoff. LED headlights are so bright that even with the cutoff angle reducing the light, it's still bright enough for them to back off.
>>28936086this also means that the lower you put it on the car, the better the effect, since the driver's eyes are now much more in-line with the headlights and the tape.
>>28936086The open roads are not a controlled laboratory where 1° to 3° is the norm for reflectance angle. There are bumps, dips, crests, and various vehicle design topologies that pretty much render that test condition moot. Light will flash brightly at some point during the drive and that's where it works anyways. At ten car lengths at 1°, you're looking at 2.62 feet of height. That's enough to return to eyeballs. At ten car lengths at 3°, you're looking at 7.86 feet. That's more than enough to return to eyeballs. You have to remember that driving reaction distances are measured in hundreds of feet. The reason why it works is because a tailgater still has to approach a car to get close. They don't teleport to your back bumper. They will approach the range where the retroreflectivity works against them and then they tend to keep their distance exactly where it's most effective.
>>28936101that would also mean brodozers would stay back on lower speed roads because being lifted, the closer they are the more likely they'd be in the splash/blast zone so to speak.
>>28936105Well yes, but the tape is aposematism. It's a "keep away" signal. It works well. The thing is that brodozer owners rarely increase their insurance coverage to cover the increased liability of owning such a vehicle. There's that recent infamous incident of a brodozer running over a Huracan. Florida also has low insurance limits so that lady is probably going to lose the truck anyways in a likely insurance subrocation case.Winning a wreck and winning an insurance claim are two totally different things. Something that isn't discussed is that insurance companies can and do drop their customers for undisclosed modifications, and even if they disclose the lift and mods, running over a car is a very fast way to get branded as a high-risk liability they need to drop immediately. There's a great burden of responsibility to owning a vehicle like that, one that most owners that like to do those mods rarely take heed to.
>>28936086I use M82 on my license plate and it absolutely keeps people from tailgating me. People will run up behind me all quick and then immediately back off. Sometimes they get pissed and turn on their high beams in retaliation. But they'll find that even more light will blast them in the face as a result.
>>28936123>But they'll find that even more light will blast them in the face as a result.
>>28936122>subrocationsubrogation
>>28936022White reflectors on the rear of a vehicle are illegal everywhere in the US. White lights in the rear, too.White and red are how you subconsciously ping what direction vehicles are going in.I would harass you so hard for that shit no matter what, it's like a giant "pick on me" flag.

>>28936286Mouth breathing is, actually, superior. You nose breathers are damaging your brains with mild hypoxia all the time.I'm slightly joking and I know you meant mouthbreather in another context.. but goddamn I don't see how people only breathe through their nose, I have to consciously try to do that.
