I'm buying a car having been #carfree for many years. The last car I owned was before smart phones were a thing. Back then you could buy a fairly nice car, new, for $20k. I had an "economy" car albeit with "nice" trim level and it was great.I'm shopping used, and everyone is recommending $25k+ used cars. "That's just how it is now". This seems absolutely insane to me. I'm seeing perfectly good (looking) used cars for $10k-15k. Better than anything I ever had before. Am I crazy or is everyone else crazy? I own a home in a fairly poor area and everyone is in BMWs, Lexues, Audis. But it's not just a ghetto thing, I've asked people from all walks of life and they're all pushing me to buy like some hot rod plug-in hybrid or an urban assault vehicle with an automatic toddler obliterator in the undercarriage. "The current zeitgeist is that anything more than 10 years old is a money pit because the rubber seals die and it costs too much to replace" or some other weird shit that doesn't seem logical.Am I missing something here? Picrel, it's how I feel when someone tells me I need a car that's worth as much as a down payment on another home.
>>28935415I had a similar reaction when I was #homefree for a few years and then decided I wanted a roof over my head again.
>>28935415If you're in the southwest, cars that have been baking in the dry heat for many years will eventually need rubber replaced. If you're in the northeast prepare for rust.10 years really isn't that old for rubber seals though. I have a car from the 90's with plenty still in good enough condition. I live up north though.German luxury brands are going to be more expensive to maintain. Get an older JDM car that hasn't had its price inflated by Initial D fans. If you just want a vehicle to get you from point a to b, get a used Civic or Corolla or the like. A ~2015 model shouldn't be a money pit unless you're getting taken for a ride by your mechanic.
>>28935415>Coachella Humiliation ritual.Wouldn't go even if it was payed for.Looks fucking miserable.
Buy a 911
>>28935453Re-live 9/11
>>28935415It's not worth it right now, keep living the #carfree dream but there's a car free loophole you need to be aware of, the current meta is m/o/torcycle
>>28935415>Back then you could buy a fairly nice car, new, for $20k.Picrel plus many people lease now.
A big reason new cars are more expensive is because of saftey regulations. You need more engineering to make them up to spec. That plus expensive shit like sensors and cameras everywhere.
>>28936058>expensive shit>sensors>camerasLol no, Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act of 2008 basically proved auto manufacturers intentionally saved like $7 per car on non rearview camera models so they could charge hundreds for the rear camera upgrade and that's why in 2018 it became mandatory. The current state of the auto industry is gaslighting you into believing modern cars are worth their cost but really you're just subsidizing the CEO's and salesman's new boat
>>28936058Big reason new cars are expensive is because nobody buys base models and everyone has all these stupid requirements. To get heated seats in my Maverick I had to pay an extra $5k ontop of $40k cad. I did a Canadian winter with -40'c days in that base model and it was LUXURIOUS because the hybrid has both electric heat and gas engine heat, remote start with a configurable timer to shut the engine off after a certain port. At no point did I need a heated seat or steering wheel, I just drove with my winter jacket on and was warm, most of the time I didn't even need cabin heat and wanted to save the gas.

>>28936132>short circuits and gives you 3rd degree burns/causes a fire
>>28936087That's why bumper repairs that used to be less than $500 before the cameras and sensors are now in the thousands.
>>28935453Israel did 9/11
>>28936410Yeah we all know that.but what that what's that got to do with expensive cars?
