This shit is getting expensive.
Even sketchy Mexican tire shops arn't cheap anymore.
>>
>>28936803
The primary ingredient in modern tires is oil. That should tell you everything.
>>
>>28936803
I used to get mount/balance on a loose set for $60. Now it's $100.
>>
Do all four tires by yourself using a set of pry bars and then you will find paying someone to mount tires with a machine is very much worth it.
>>
>>28936839
Nah it's a piece of cake. I buy all my tires off ebay and mount them myself. I'm not paying some Mexican to do such an easy job.
>>
has anyone here taken the harbor freight tire changer pill?
>>
>>28936815
iirc modern tyres use at least 5 gallons/>25 litres just for one tyre. but in the 00s and prior they used even more, i think at least 3 times the amount. But they also lasted a lot longer before succumbing to dry rot.
>>
>>28936803
So change them yourself, I do.
The only problem is finding a friendly tyre store who will balance the wheels afterwards without ripping you off for nearly as much as fitting costs.
>>
>>28936877
Yes, with a couple of extra levers and some lube it's quite easy for my 60-70 profile tyres.
Can't say what it would be like for some 265/35r19 rubber bands though
>>
>>28936803
Everything is running rubber band tires on expensive alloy rims. They're a bitch to mount without damaging the rim or the tire. They're covering their ass for when Jose fucks up and they have to buy you a new set of tires.
>>
>>28936899
I can't even imagine how tire shops operate anymore. EVERY single tire replacement I'd had at EVERY single shop causes damage, even when I ask them not to. It's literally an impossible unicorn to get a tire change without them scratching something.

Fine, but now every econo-car, even Camrys, come with low profile tires on GLOSS BLACK rimz. I'm just imaginig how every wheel's gonna be scratched to shit at the first tire change.
>>
>>28936851
what about balancing, anon?
>>
>>28936803
It's actually not difficult with tire levers, there's a technique to it though and you need to know it otherwise you'll manage the tire or wheel
>>28936877
I bought one of these a long time ago back when they were still painted red and it works but the tire lever it comes with scratches up aluminum wheels, if you want to do aluminum wheels you'll want to buy another lever. Here's the thing though, you'll need to know the proper technique or it'll be difficult, same with basic tire levers, so once you know how to swap a tire it doesn't matter which method you choose, I personally find basic tire levers adequate. The nice thing about this tool is the bead breaker though
>>
>>28936955
>you'll manage the tire or wheel
>you'll damage the tire or wheel
>>
>>28936950
There's a fuckload of tension involved and it only takes a small fuckup to scratch something. Having rims that stick out past your tires isn't helping the situation.
>>
>>28936950
i like to think that when i bring my car in for a tyre change, it's a nice easy job when the guy's whole day has otherwise been dealing with bullshit rubber bands.
>t. 70 profile car tyres
>>
>>28936955
I've only changed a tire by hand on a motorcycle with a spoked wheel.
What's the best technique for a car tire?
>>
>>28937012
I've never changed a motorcycle tyre but changing a car tyre is basically the same as a bicycle tyre so I imagine it will be much the same as your motorcycle too.
>>
>call multiple shops
>$80-$120
>bare rims and tires, not dropping off the car, just mount and balance em and i'll haul em off
>"we can fit you in next week..."
>ask if they can do it after hours or something when less slammed, it's not like they'll have a whole ass car in the bay
>"no we have many customers, too busy to keep track of your wheels etc etc"

i need a tire machine anons, these shops don't want my business
>>

>>28937012
It's the same technique for every tire, the important thing is knowing about pushing the opposite side of the tire's bead into the drop, this gives the levering side room to mount
>>
>>28936955
>>28937066
>>28937012
>>28937033
I used to work at a small tire shop btw, I've done many car tires, truck tires, I've done tubed and tubeless motorcycle tires, and then I became a bicycle and motorcycle courier where I'm my own mechanic so I've done a lot of my own bicycle and motorcycle tires now too
>>
Also, get a spray bottle and mix a few drops of dawn blue and fill it with water. This helps move the bead over the rim and helps mount the bead properly. Use a lot of soapy water
>>
>>28937069
Bit of water on a bar of soap and a paintbrush

Yellow dot to valve stem and fucking send it. I haven't had an actual tire balance issue in ages since I quit running 16.5" military tires on stuff. If I ever do I suppose I'll bust a bead and dump in some ceramic tire balancing beads.
>>
>>28937126
I can feel it in the steering wheel

I know what an unbalanced tire feels like, and like I've said I haven't had an issue in years. It's a big nothing burger that the jews at the tire shop are upcharging you for.
>>
>>28937212
Only got lucky once and had unbalanced steers which didn't wobble the wheel
>>
>>28937126
>Yellow dot to valve stem
Correct on alloy wheels. On steelies, you match the red dot (tire high point) with the rim dimple (wheel low point). FYI, on Japanese cars the rim dimple is just painted on.

>>28937267
thanks I always wondered why there were two

>spend $$$$ on a proper tyre changer and balancer (not chinesium slop)
>youtube and practice on a dozen old rims until you git gud
>start offering to do it for friends and coworkers for half the price of every local shop
>word gets around, suddenly everyone wants their shit done by you
>pay off the machines in a few months and rake in the dosh thereafter

Your excuse?

Literally happened to the local backyard tyre guy

eventually you realize the john q public are actual retards who just want essentially free shit
people will abuse the fuck out of you if you let them.

i cannot blame shops for charging $100 to mount/balance 4 tires.

>>

This, the problem is scumbags and brokeshits turning to you for free labor. The worst get aggressive for denying them
>>28937442
Can't happen here sadly, Amerifucks will steal or break the machines, it's pure retardation here. There used to be a time we used to be a society and the local libraries used to have a garage and tools for rent or use but they had to close because of idiots and dipshits. They had programs and classes led by retired masters too, I learned basic woodworking in a public skill building course for kids when I was like 7, no cost. We used to be a society

This 1000%. I don't want retards around me. I've been through this before selling hay to horse people and am getting out of that too. You'll have tards calling you all hours of the day and night, and promising they'll get some money to you tomorrow if you can just do this small little favor for them this time. You'll have people bitching because there's some small scuff on their rim they swear wasn't there before and demanding money for new rims on their dime. Fuck em, let them do it themselves. People are assholes and the less you are around them the better off you are. Not to mention the complete 100% waste of time it is dealing with their bullshit, and having strangers on your property looking around at all your stuff.

T. guy with tire changer and shop full of goodies that does my absolute best to not do any work for anyone else.
>>

On your dime is what I meant to say.
>>
>>28937468
Man I've come so close to ordering something like picrel. Considered offering mount/balance on Facebook/Craigslist to break even on the machine. Sounds like a bigger headache than it's worth.

Find better tire guys.
Shops have managers that are usually pretty good at tire swaps.
Or they put the best guy on it.

>>28937468
I'd like my own machine.
Shops get super weird when you ask them to mount Slicks.
>>
>>28936877
Yes. I used it to mount about five tires and eventually got so pissed off at it that I beat it with the pry bar and threw it in my metal scrap pile to later be scrapped. Fuck that thing it was never intended for modern tires. You will tear up the beads of your tires.

Just order it for yourself and you'll eventually break even on the machine anyhow... Or if you really want to deal with people go for it man. Someone has to do it. Not me though.

Be sure you tell them what they're getting up front, tell them the cost, tell them if they want a fucking roadside warranty to go to the big stores and pay 2x as much. Let them know exactly where you stand on the issue up front and if they don't like it tell them to GTFO and never come back. Don't give them an inch or they'll take a mile.

My only experience working with the public was for 2 weeks at home depot in college. I have zero customer service experience, but from what I've heard, and what you're saying, it sounds like a pain in the ass. Half the time I sell a car, the buyer is retarded.

KT2002

I been seeing lotsa JewP00pz vids on DIY tire changes with that. $350-$500 on Temu or Amazon or website of your choice.
