>digital dash that could turn off without warning while driving.
PACCARS do that all the time and no one but the drivers seem to give a shit

You know what didn't happen to analog gauges?
>>
>dash turns off
AHHHHH NIGGERMAN SAVE ME I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT VELOCITY THIS NIGHTMARE CONTRAPTION IS ROCKETING ALONG AT
>>

That had been my greatest fear about digital dashboards back when they were first becoming meme screens. Not because of speed though, because of shit like speeding tickets, my country is insane with that kind of thing.

My greatest fear is it breaking and costing fucktons of money to replace or like if you have a 10 year old car, eventually they are going to stop making the exact screen for your car, it would be nice if the government stepped in to make parts cheaper and more interchangeable but noooo that's communism.

>speeding tickets
it's really silly that the focus is that
and most cop cars are lazy and are parked by the side of the road so they can play with their phone the whole time
its such a game, the speed limit can change from 70 to 45 for a "work zone" even if there's no work being done in the zone and it's never quite clear what the tolerance above the limit is - if I go 12 over to pass someone could I be ticketed?
cops should focus on preventing antisocial behavior - there's plenty of people weaving, following, and driving dangerously to ticket without a radar gun at all.

Analog gauges fuck up all the time. The cable can seize or strip in a fully mechanical system. Stepper motors fail all the time. There's a reason why every race car uses a digital setup these days. It's more reliable when you use quality parts, the same goes for planes.

Replacements still exist for a lot of old cars, so there will probably always be an aftermarket for that kind of thing. Not to say it wouldn't be a pain in the ass to locate one and replace it though.

They are all just so similar enough it seems like it would make more sense to standardize the software for self driving programs and car displays so manufacturers can focus on engines and seats and things that are more brand specific.

A 12 inch screen can suit most cars.
And really there should be standardized programming for hands free driving and they need to finally come to an agreement of how much will be forced warnings and restrictions vs software-aided autonomy i.e. how many seconds they would allow you to not look at the road, or if eye-tracking would even be mandatory - i think it should just be periodic contact with the steering wheel and dependent on what kind of road it is (width, interstate or not)
and also we should have car2car communication if cars can talk to each oher we don't have to drive anymore
the government is lazy and so are the car companies
reeeeeeeeee

Idk man, a lot of companies really don't want to work together and want all the business for themselves. At least BMW had pretty interchangeable parts for a long time, you could swap parts on the E32 and E34 pretty easily, same with the later E38 and E39 and then a lot of the early 2000s cars.

You could even swap almost the entire interior, computers and all, from an E32 to an E34 (which I did with the seats and OBC once years ago).

the point of government is to make everyone play nice for broader benefit otherwise its just feudalism and tyranny
>>
>>28940250
The issue could become what is agreed as the standard. Something really shit could end up being chosen as the default and everyone is just stuck with it, while at least multiple versions means you have choice.
>>
>>28940251
certainly, but then you could build in some flexibility perhaps to the software while standardizing the hardware with the aim to be cooperation rather than perfect uniformity, and obviously there needs to be a transparent grievance process if there is a rule that is onerous and pissing off customers. It's customers who drive these things and what makes customers happy is what the software and hardware settings should reflect, not what makes a company the most money.
>>
>recall
>for a software update
huh? Just push the update??? Or do they have to flash different firmware? Either way pretty insignificant considering how much shit they're doing with their own software. Not that I'm a fan of all my controls having to go through a computer and software, but they've been doing it pretty well lately.
