so, i've got an old diesel i use for camping around 3-4 times a year. The starting battery charges to 13v but it won't crank. Cranking volts drop to 9v when cranking. I over cranked it when I was changing injection pumps once and forgot to recharge it after that. If I just leave the battery on a tender and install it in the car when i want to use it, would the battery last indefinitely? They aren't expensive but I hate having to buy batteries every 2- 3 years.
>>28941188>I over cranked it when I was changing injection pumps once and forgot to recharge it after that>ripIt's most likely fucked, no amount of battery tender will fix it. Some people might say you should hook it up to a DC stick welder at 120A for a few seconds to bring it back to life but it will never be healthy.
>>28941188It can keep a high voltage with no load but the capacity can still be shot. Crack the "do not add water" caps off and see if you have to add water to cover the plates. Other than that, it's history.
>>28941188Get a new battery and stop making shit threads.
A car battery may read 13V but the CCA is way below it's factory rating. It's the AH that starts the car.I have a supply of car batteries that I buy for $60 a pop out of the wreckers that I keep on a tender. Every time I walk past, I switch to a different battery.
>>28941269You aren't wrong, but in the future if I only install the battery when i want to drive the thing, would the batteries last a lot longer?
>>28941294Invest in a “battery tender”. It’s like $50 at Walmart. And stop being dumb. Makes batteries lasts for 8 years. Or more.
>>28941294Hard wire a small 2 pin connector to the battery via a 10A fuse. Have the connector somewhere you can get to it easily from outside the car. Put the matching connector on the battery tender. Then you can just park up and plug it in within seconds.
>>28941357i typically buy a new battery every oil change. It's faily inexpensive and worth the piece of mind.
>>28941188>I hate having to buy batteries every 2- 3 years.guess you hate refueling, changing wiper blades and topping up motor oil as well? its just how it is. batteries can last forever in that they have a voltage, but the cca, what you actually need, drops for every year.
>>28941369the lead acid battery is over 50 years old. Surely they have invented a superior battery technology that isn't a flammable bomb
actually, the lead acid is 165 years old
>>28941364> i typically buy a new battery every oil change.Fuck this thread. Car guys don’t exists anymore.
>>28941364>>28941410kek great bait
>>28941410I've got a LifePo4 cranking battery in the engine bay of my car. 5 years going strong. No DCDC charger, just straight of the alternator. BMS build into the battery seems to keep it protected. Nobody does this though because the initial cost was 10x the price of lead.
>>28941414I change my battery along with oil changes too, except I never change my oil, just add more
>>28941188Lead starter batteries don't like deep discharges. It's probably fucked.Idle voltage only tells you that none of the cells is shorted. Get a new one, they last 5 years or more.
I'm gonna say it: Lead acid batteries last for 5-7 years before you need to change them. If you change them every year or two then you're a fucking idiot.
>>28941461Based oil burner, my ride burns so much oil the normies stuck behind me in grid lock are visibly suffocating from my fumes, holding their heads like they have a headache and pinching their noses lol sometimes I run b12 for extra brain damage fumes from combusted acetone or seafoam for burned naphtha
>>28941615based carbon monoxide producer
>>28941622It's catless too
I had a battery working perfectly fine for 3 years and it just fucking died overnight. I charged it and it didn't work. Dropped to 2V while starting. I charged again and it worked for one day. After third charge it somehow dropped to 11.5V.My Li-on jump starter is now also completely dead after 5 years.
