Miata guy here. I hate trucks. But I do have a small farm and a very long gravel driveway. I get cubic yards of gravel, sand, mulch, and dirt multiple times a year. I have a car trailer I sometimes use to get another cubic yard.
I hate driving the thing.
Basically, if you need it for your own use, you're already rich enough to buy a nice car and just use the truck for work stuff. If you need it for your landscaping job and live in an apartment? Yeah, I get why you'd have one as your only vehicle. If you work in a cubicle and your idea of "hauling" is getting a big TV, you don't need a truck (fine if you simply want it though).
Picrel, random cubic yard from Google.

I can pay uhaul $50 for a trailer for a few hours and haul all the mulch I need on a little trailer. I don't need to carry an empty bed around for years just for that one or two times I use it every few years.
Of course, if you do use your bed every week, every month, maybe even every quarter, then it makes sense. But otherwise it's stupid. Just rent a little trailer when you need it.
>>
>>28942695
You don't "get it" because you have a sedentary lifestyle.
Its not about a load of mulch.
Its not about a jet ski.
Its not about a bloody deer carcass.
Its about ALL of that.
Its about being active and DOING THINGS on a constant basis.

You didnt see a post about an 8 foot tall armoire for sale then go get it.
You didnt get a call from your buddy about a downed tree in his driveway then go over and cut it up with your chainsaw and haul it off.
You didnt load up your dirtbike and take it out to the trailhead on saturday unexpectedly just because there was a break in the weather.

You spent the weekend downloading random shit from steam and watching podcasts about Magic: The Gathering.

I put two mates and three bikes in the back of my Volvo, which I then drive off to the trails, for which its offroad ability is more than sufficient.

You can't even comprehend the rural lifestyle. Some of us use our trucks on an at least weekly basis. Plus it's not always going to the store and buying things. Sometimes you're hauling around stuff on your own property. You're not going to drive all the way into town to rent a truck to drive back home to spend 15 minutes moving something and then drive all the way back to town to turn it in.

this upcoming weekend I'll be taking my truck to the mushroom farm for some premium compost. $50 per cubic yard. two will do.

Why are truckfags itt incapable of realizing that there are two types of truckfags? Vanity niggers with shiny trucks shouldn't be driving around oversized 8000lb toys just because they want. The faggots actually using their trucks are a minority and they should get to keep those trucks. You don't even need draconian, overreaching regulation to stop this, just make it so you need a documented business reason and a different license to own anything over a certain size. Also, make it so all consumer trucks have to look like a 2004 Ford Ranger.

Its the basement dwelling nocarz that dont understand the difference between the two.
But besides that...

The same posters who seethe about trucks day after day also brag about their 0-60 and skidpad numbers.
There is zero reason to have a street car that can hit 1.24Gs in a corner. Its a public road not your personal track.
Accelerating from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds is illegal in all 50 states (exhibition of speed).
A Miata and the Brodozer are two sides of the same coin.

no u. you stated that cars pulling "high" Gs and have very fast acceleration don't belong on the roads, like the pavement princesses previously mentioned. you then equated those to a miata as being both impractical choices to drive around with. it's the exact inference to make, as you literally used it as an example following the gripe about fast cars. so either you're baiting, dumb, or are so underage that you don't understand how to structure an argument

I would actually say a miata is a perfectly valid sports car to have on the road, just like a single cab ranger (not the fat fucks they currently make) for the average truck enjoyer

Half the roads in my county aren't paved. You wouldnt make it within 3 miles of my property after a rain.

BTW, I can put (18) 50 pound bags of feed in the trunk of my Camry
I can also carry 10 foot 2x4s with the trunk closed (obviously not those 2 things at the same time).
Why do I know this?
Because im not wasting money on gas for something a shitbox can do and that Camry is disposable. My trucks are worth money. Ill throw miles at the Camry until it blows up then ill roll it into a ditch, light it on fire and walk away. Ill buy a replacement the next morning.
But theres many things it cant do, thus the trucks.

Mt. Fortuna in San Diego is 1,293 feet high.
Its 18 miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The M1 highway in the UK is 193 miles long and the highest point is an elevation of 289 feet (and it runs down the center of Britian). The Pacific Coast Highway has higher elevations at points that its only 100 yards inland.

This is what many euros dont understand.
Elevation and terrain.
If your 4 banger saloon survives going up the grade with a 2 ton load youre going to die going down when you smoke the brakes.

There are days during the rainy season where you cant leave my property without 4wd, mud tires and a foot of ground clearance.

Trucks retain their value at higher rates and are able to handle failing infrastructure (pot holes, flooded streets) better without damage. Thus the final cost is cheaper than a "sports car".

If you need a truck every day, ok. It makes sense then. But the vast majority of people with a privately owned half-ton or greater are just wasting money on these things. There is only one guy on my street I see using his truck enough for it to be worth it, for him. I wouldn't say he's wasting his money. But for every guy like that, there are 10 people using it as a suburban commuter. Most trucks on my street have never towed anything or have had anything in their beds.

>people are free to waste their money!
Ok, sure. But don't complain when you're poor as fuck because you're driving a top-trim halfton to go to work and the grocery store. Honda and Toyota commuters hold their value as well as a trugg.

My local landfill has a section for organic matter (mostly downed trees and such the road crews clear).
They make these compost piles that are 10 feet high and 200 feet long with watering systems and a special dozer thats turns it over. Talked to the guy that runs it once and he said they had a full grown cow they put in it and the cow returned to base elements in a week due to the heat and microbe activity.
Last time I was there it was $22 to have the front loader drop a load in my gmt400 longbed that put it on the bumpstips.
The equivelant of like $500 in bags from home depot.

Oh.
BTW.
Some of you will fucking love this.
Congress passed a bill a few years ago that declassified human waste.
The purpose was for water reclaimation plants to take the "sediment" from their tanks and sell it as "potting soil".
As an example- about 97% of the water used by Las Vegas casinos (sewage) is "filtered" and returned to Lake Mead (Hoover Dam). And yes. Thats a reaervoir on the Colorado River.
(All the drugs people take thats pissed out and returned to the water supply is a thread for /pol/).
But next time you buy a bag of "potting soil" from Lowes or home depot or ace hardware and when you open it up it just smells like shit....thats because you just paid for an actual bag of shit.

Your maintained GRAVEL and dirt road =/= my 3 miles that has 4 houses on it.
Im actually the smallest plot @ 40 acres. Everyone else has around 500.
When a storm knocks out power I already know we'll be the last to get repaired because its a min/max numbers game.

And its not just the 10" ruts.
The clay will turn your "all-terrains into a racing slick.
It doesnt matter how cool you think you are. You cant beat physics with hubris. Youll wind up in the ditch everytime.

Here's a pic of my largest meadow.
Yes all the trees in the background are also mine.

I live in a swamp. I have forest for miles around, all the trees in this pic are mine. I even have a lake with bass, entirely on my property. When it rains everything is flooded, hence the raised gravel.
I have land further than the eye can see in 3 directions, I have 3 chicken coops and tons of trails across the property.
I have a Jeep, too, but I almost never drive it.

I grew up in one of the top 10 largest cities in the U.S. so im not some hillbilly hick....
Fresh manure from a cow farm smells (like poop) but isnt repulsive. Because (at worst) it was corn fed poop or (best) was grass fed free-range poop.
Very "earthy" and natural smell either way.
>what goes in = what comes out
Human diet is everything you can imagine.
So think of dead grass rotting in a field vs everytbing you ate in the last month piled up and rotting in your driveway.
Do you want to dig around in that field or your driveway?

I've bought pickups for less than $1000 many times. Hell I've had them given to me for free.

Ive bought (2) $800 Fullsize Broncos and drove them both home.
>Price is just a coincidence.
One I still have 19 years later. It was "one owner, 50k miles, only driven to church on sundays" kind of shit (had a shit load of options, including the still present dealer undecoating). The other was a project truck and the guy was deploying and his wife said "oh hell no, that thing isnt sitting in the yard for a year while youre in Iraq". I bought it for a 351w swap and also used a shitload of other stuff like the 6" Rough Country lift (I fucking hate Rough Country lifts).
>that was 20 years ago gramps.
OK
I just picked up a '68 F100 from Copart (fuck those guys) winning bid of $825 turned into to $1420 with their fees.
Was advertised as "runs & drives".
Carb was pissing fuel.
$40 rebuild kit and 20 minutes later I was driving it around town.
Im still under $2k with the windshield (fuck that was a nightmare to install) and other miscellaneous bits it needed.
Buddy just bought a GMT800 extra cab short bed with a low mileage 350 swap from a suburban for $900.
Killed the transmission a month later but $250 for a rebuild kit and another $150 for a 3/4 shell and some other minor bits and its good for another 150k miles easy.

So whats your mentality here?
You think "A Truck" means you have to go down to the dealer and buy a Ram 1500 Hemi 4x4 Crew Cab Short Bed Lone Star Edition"?
>I have one of those also BTW
Some people drag a '95 Ranger out of a forest for 200 bucks then rebuild it over the course of a decade just to build a Baja 500 prerunner because all they've driven for 35 years is fullsizes and a mini truck on 32s looks like fun

Extremely light.
Was on a cloverleaf onramp one night and a broken sprinkler head doused the road. I was driving in a "spirited" manner because I knew the car and ramp and didnt see the water until I was 20 feet from it.
>fidget spinner dot exe
Buddy swears it was 5+ rotations
Wound up facing the wrong way with an oncoming car (they stopped and let me do a 3 point).
At the time I was thinking 2.5 spins but looking back it was probably just 1.5.
Didnt hit the guardrail, no damage.
>it might have actually been 5+

Absolute bitch to get parts for (even in the 90s).

Chick's absolutely fucking loved it. That car got more pussy than me but luckily once they were in it they had to fuck something and that would be me.

Thank God I lived in San Diego where rain never mattered because there was no top for it. If there was "a storm" forecast id just throw a tarp on in with some magnets. If it happened to get wet it didnt matter because- San Diego - it dried out 20 minutes later.

Sold it because maintenance was just too much for a DD.
I still have my Chiltons manual somewhere- I juat saw it.

Fullsize Chevy Pickup parked next to the miata....

>>28943614
Instead of going off points you made, I'm just going to say: based.
That sounds like what I expected, sportscars like to spin but they sometimes give you an opportunity to avoid a real crash and turn it into just a spinout (oh no! lol).
The parts availability is what turns me off, and it's never getting better. 9/10 cool cars.

I never said I could do anything with a miata, you're assuming other anons were me. I did say miatas can offroad at the range that most people actually "offroad," which is true.
Keep your speed - this is the rule of driving in mud. All the other shit is for when you get stuck. And I have a Silverado with 900+tq, a manual pentastar wrangler, a range rover, a gator, a golf cart, and 2 tractors if I get stuck (which I don't, but I often have to pull out others that live here).

But that's the only time you've spun? That's kinda sad.

>But that's the only time you've spun?
You sweet summer child.
>look it up

Texas tried to charge me $2k and suspend my license (they couldnt) for a tree in the median that I spun out and hit because of (see previous for the irony) broken sprinkler with mustang.
It took 2 tow trucks to pull my car off that tree.
Tow truck driver was like "well its $110 if you get your car out of the yard tomorrow or for $250 I can drop it wherever you want".
Ya fuck impound- Im 2 blocks away, ill hit the ATM before you get there.

It's funny because I go to visit 20 years later and drive down that road and its
>"tree, tree no tree, tree, tree, tree"
Ya.
I did that.
>>

And yes.
Same mustang mentioned earlier.
Was not 592hp at that time.
Although I've had multiple mustangs before and since- upto S197
>>
>>28943667
I learned to drift by pushing limits, wisely. Early on it was guaranteed I'd fuck up half the time. I have spun out, so, fucking many times. That's how you learn. I picked places with lots of asphalt or grass runoff.
I've been doing this shit since I got my first RWD in '08. The only times I needed a tow was when my clutch slave cylinder went out. I've never hit a single thing drifting, and I do powerslides on my way to work. Pick your corners to your skill level. Once I had a radiator blow from busted thermostat but I have a car trailer.
>>
>>28942160
There's nothing wrong with owning a truck per-se. It's just that modern day pickup trucks are overpriced bullshit for what they are, and needlessly large for very little gain in the bed size.
>>
>>28942160
You can fit all that in a trailer.
When you need to haul shit, hook up the trailer. When you don't, you can have a fairly small and economic car.
If you're a tradie and need the truck all the time, sure, have a truck, but a lot of people buy far more car than they need 99% of the time.

>>
>>28943143
I used to think that way too, anon.
Renting a truck everytime you see a yard sale, or need to pickup some plywood from Home Depot is very inconvenient, and expensive.
I was looking to buy a beater truck just for that purpose, occasionally picking up stuff.
Unfortunately nothing here under $8k was viable.
I ended up buying a new used truck for $32k instead. It is now my daily. No, I do not give a fuck about gas prices.
I used this truck only yesterday to pickup a new Speed Queen washer and dryer, and on my way home I ran into a yard sale with a buy selling a broken Jogn Deere 125 riding mower for $100, its mine now and once fixed, I will flip it.
Yes. renting is still cheaper, but its so much more inconvenient.
