Do you own a boat, anon? I don't see any better board to talk about 'em.
The good ol' question: used or new?
On one hand, I can get a brand new Texas 540 for 17k with this enclosed cockpit (and a sleeping cabin deeper down), won't feel miserable in bad weather, and it being brand new just sounds appealing.
On the other hand, I can get an "Aquamar Bahia 20 (2012) Mercury 40HP EFI 2013" for 16k with an enclosed cabin where I can sleep, and a toilet + water tap inside. Less protection from the elements, but easier to pass under low bridges. I've never owned a boat so I don't know if 2012 is old enough to require any extensive maintenance.
What would you buy?

Fastest, cheapest smallest boat in that order of importance

But I own a sports car and a motorbike so I can't tow

Are there many situations where a boat is faster transport? Or are boats more like transport for specific hobbies?
>>
>>28947065
>But I own a sports car and a motorbike so I can't tow
Sounds like a jet ski is what you want. Yeah, I can see not wanting to put a hitch on your sports car, but it would most certainly be able to tow a jet ski and it's trailer. btw, what sports car??
>>
>>28947065
>Are there many situations where a boat is faster transport?
Remote areas with no roads.
>Or are boats more like transport for specific hobbies?
I think boats are more specialized than any land vehicle. Bikes, cars and trucks participate in Dakar Rally all together, but you'll never see a dinghy or a cruise ship participating in a regatta.
I personally want a portable apartment, I love traveling on my bike but this time I don't want to stay at hostels.

I own a 20ft aluminum hull fishing boat?
used
fucking neither of those shitboxes
>an enclosed cabin where I can sleep, and a toilet + water tap inside
is near useless, that toilet wont handle a man sized shit (just piss overboard), a water tap is so much more fucking usless than you can imagine when you could just buy a 48 pack of water bottles for a few bucks
and I guarantee you will never be able to actually sleep on any fucking boat that you could afford to buy

>I own a 20ft aluminum hull fishing boat?
Cool, I considered one as an option as well, but I want to eventually venture into coastal waters, and doing that on flat bottom hull sounds like a terrible idea.
>you will never be able to actually sleep on any fucking boat
Dunno, enough space to lay down in those two. I'm used to sleeping in pod hostel beds, this can't be worse than that.
>>
>>28947105
>Dunno, enough space to lay down in those two.
yeah, it's not about space
imagine you are in a hammock and two retarded midgets are attempting to push you left/right in rhythm to a song but they can't agree on the song
also, you have an inescapable/unshaking feeling that the thing you just spend a shitload of money on is slowly floating towards certain destruction
did the anchor slip? did the wind pick up? does the shit passing by see us?

there's really no reason to overnight on the water
docking is 100%, without a doubt, undeniably easier, nicer, more convenient and obvious
are you REALLY going to go on a trip so long that you can't find a port to overnight at?
in my experience, unless you are on a yacht with a full galley/berth/head around 35ft+ you will absolutely regret it
what you are asking is if it's a good idea to buy a civic with a sleeping bag in the trunk and a cardboard box to shit in so you can regularly go to both the nearest city and across the country
yeah, I guess you can but spending ~20k on a shitbox to suffer is not a typical choice
>>
>>28947115
>did the anchor slip? did the wind pick up? does the shit passing by see us?
Yeah, I understand that staying overnight at a random spot on the water isn't fun, and I don't plan to do that, I want to keep the boat moored overnight.
>what you are asking is if it's a good idea to buy a civic with a sleeping bag in the trunk and a cardboard box to shit in so you can regularly go to both the nearest city and across the country
Precisely.
I want to travel and I have to choose how I do it. I can choose between:
- an option that sucks (hostels);
- an option that is expensive (decent accommodations);
- an option that comes with risks (hobo-camping / sleeping rough)
And my choice is to try out the option which sucks, comes with risks, and is expensive. I'm not the first person to try it out, so maybe it'll turn out to be enjoyable.
>>
I've had a bunch of jet-skis and a boston whaler.
Now all I have is a paddleboat from the '90s.

That face doesn't look like the one always in these. [enhance] Hey, that face looks familiar. [enhance] Yesss. The wheel centercaps are a nice touch.
>>
>>28947134
yeah, you sound dead set on a completely terrible experience that is so expensive that it makes no sense
the fact you are considering something with 40hp and you want to spend several days(?) on the water AND you are willing to spends thousands for the experience is truly retarded
a days journey with a 40hp motor will get you MAYBE 200-250 miles, cost you 60 bucks in fuel and be absolutely miserable
honestly you would be better set buying a 90's 26ft+ sailboat for 10k, taking a few weeks of sailing lessons and spending another 5-10k on fixing everything wrong with it if you want an 'on the water' experience

>>28947148
To be more correct I'm dead set on trying an alternative way to enjoy the travel, and I want that experience to be pleasant and cheap, but having no boating experience I don't know what would be reasonable and what would be retarded.
I can buy a bigger yacht for 100k, but I don't want to spend that much before trying out the lifestyle. I could also find a cheaper option, like pic for 9k, but I don't expect cheaper options to be any better.
>honestly you would be better set buying a 90's 26ft+ sailboat for 10k, taking a few weeks of sailing lessons and spending another 5-10k on fixing everything wrong with it if you want an 'on the water' experience
This could be the best idea, I'm simply being lazy, the idea of dealing with sails intimidates me.
Is electric propulsion + solar still not viable?

Had to dig real deep in my stash but this was when i began building the boat after it got constructed and painted in red crimson gelcoat.
>>
>>28947045
>The good ol' question: used or new?

Its all on what you can afford if possible get as new as you can with warranty and use it as much as you can until that warranty hits its expiration date.
>>
>>28947045
Boating is boring as fuck, the only reason you buy a boat is to impress chicks that don't know any better.

There's nowhere to go with a boat, you get sun burnt, it's cold, it smells like shit, it takes so much prep time to launch that half the day is gone by the time you get it into the water and the running costs are astronomical.

>>28947102
Yeah if you aren't chasing dumb thots like this then there's no point. Also you'll still be broker than the man she thinks she deserves to be with.
>>
>>28947045
anon you need to look at at least 30ft boats if you want to live aboard, not because you can't sleep in one but because it's missing otherwise important auxiliaries. All boats will require extensive maintenance, no exceptions, 50 hours is a second maintenance interval. First is 25.
>>28947163
>but having no boating experience I don't know what would be reasonable and what would be retarded
as big a boat as you can get insured on, that has a bow thruster. stern thrusters are gay below 60ft and you can use the engines.
>>
>>28947068
2004 fairlady z, its not much but its manual, fun and not too hard to wrench on

Was mainly bumping thread because I am interested in what boat /o/tists think, I dont have the boat tism yet

Those boat houses in the Netherlands look super cozy, like the one James may had in the boat special

>>
>>28947163
>and I want that experience to be pleasant and cheap
so
>a brand new Texas 540 for 17k
doesn't fit that at all and exposes you as either deeply unserious or completely retarded
if you truly want something you can overnight on 25ft is probably the absolute minimum if you are freshwater and it should be classified as a yacht(not the colloquial term)
even then I wouldn't want to spend more than a day on one
sailboats get like a 5ft bonus due to design and how people tend to use them
>>28947045
look, you came to an anonymous forum with a question and got told a few times that you are way off the mark, maybe take that as a hint that the thing you have no experience in is maybe different to how you imagined it
it's totally possible to spend ~20k upfront on something like
https://www.boattrader.com/boat/1999-bayliner-ciera-2858-sun-bridge-9854621/
and then expect to spend another 5-10k depending on how much work you can do to bring it to a real reliable and dependable state
https://www.boattrader.com/boat/1996-com-pac-27-2-9807138/
here's an example of a sailboat of similar caliber

if you think you can anchor and weather a night in anything less, go ahead and try I guess
I would bet any amount of money against you ever doing it more than once

Those things look like a huge hassle, just get a nice cheap ole Jon boat and use it a bunch until you figure out the boat thing. There’s literally dozens of shit boats like that abandond in my local river system because ambitious people think they can handle an endless project that eats money and shits out misery

women are attracted to self-sufficiency and a man who uses a boat to catch fish that will feed his family has proven himself to be self-sufficient. thus, he gets the girl.

Ive been doing this gig since i was 16 and the only thing women care about while on a boat is getting drunk and wet.

but they are married so they got the girl.

fishing on a boat is a great way to escape the wife and get some alone time. plus fish are tasty and healthy (and free).
>>
>>28947294
>the only thing women care about while on a boat is getting drunk and wet.
you say that like it's a bad thing. but getting women wet on a boat is my idea of a good time. you should try having sex sometime and maybe you can relate.
>>
>>28947252
Women aren't attracted to poor wagies.
>>
>>28947317
because poor wagies aren't successfully self-sufficient. i mean, duh.
>>
>>28947313
But his statement is that women woukd be attracted to the guy that has fishing boat because he is a provider and he is not wrong because i guy that can afford a 32ft contender or regulator has the money to provide.

>fishing on a boat is a great way to escape the wife and get some alone time.
And what do you think my clients are doing anon they’re trying to catch a break.
Drink some beers and catch some good pelagic species.
Now im not so sure about the free part because lets say one of the guys that owns a 30ft intrepid spends $750 dollars on fuel combined for his truck and boat each trip.

Thats hilarious because the boat was ex drug that was decommissioned and later purchased by one of the bacardi kids as a pleasure boat.
And i bought it when i was 22 at the time maybe in 1999 or 2001 at the marina i worked for.
It was abandoned on the racks and they owed about $8000 dollars of storage fees so i went half n half with a good friend of mine whose parents owned a waterfront home with a lift in miami coral gables area.

>Lessons learned.
All three engines were locked and needed to be rebuilt. I spent almost 20k repairing the entire boat.
>$7k on just parts for the motors.
>the entire upholstery at the time was a steal for $3k good luck finding that now a days.
>electronics and accessories were almost $4k
>Hiring buffers and detailers because the hulls paint was so moist and soggy.

Never will i ever do this shit again.
