Can someone that knows what they're talking about tell me if this is right?Looking at finally getting a M240i Coupe. Been wanting one for a long time and finally in a place to get it. A friend of mine has a BRZ and is telling me that I'm wasting a lot of money because the BRZ and the GR86 are better cars and I will be wasting money on this. Someone else I know at work, not a friend, drives a Miata and tells me he would never buy a BMW.Now I'm a bit hesitant. I've test driven the M240i a few times now and it feels amazing to drive. I've driven his BRZ and I don't really think they're comparable when it comes to power.Some /O/ anon can tell me straight.

If you're new to RWD and drive really hard, you'll want to start on something with less power. If you just do a redline run once in a blue moon it's fine, but lots of people have died learning RWD in something with power and realizing it can spin out on you if you give it throttle wrong in a straight line.You may have had high-power FWD or AWD. The B58, even with said plastic oil pump is still very reliable for what it is and especially compared to it's competition, and it's still leagues better than something like an N54 so that's not saying they'll all be timebombs, either.I think your friends/coworkers are just coping because you'll be faster, or because they've only ever owned "economy" brands because they're scared of anything else.>t. first car was a clapped out 200k mile BMW and I loved it

The M240i and the prior M235i are unique cars for BMW’s history becuase it slightly predates the updated nomenclature they currently use with 330iM340iM3M3 competition M3 CSM3 CSLThe M235i was intended to be the top tier 2 series but the success of the 1M meant bmw felt an M2 would be a success despite the relatively heavy and cheap chassis. The M2 took the M235i, added some reinforced pistons and crank, added a little power, and added aluminum front control arms. I don’t even think they changed the sway bars. The M235i was already set up for track driving and there wasn’t much to change.The M2 competition adds the M3 engine. The M240i is the facelift M235i and so if you buy it you are buying, in a lot of ways, the most reliable and practical track ready BMW on the used market. They quite literally took M235is and added a cage and fire extinguisher and removed some qualify of life and raced it as their Caymen GT4 clubsport tier entry level race car. Miata I won’t disrespect but it needs a lot of mods to become ‘good’. An M240i is objectively an excellent car that has all the things BMW is famous for built in. You won’t even need fomo for an M2 because it’s basically an M2 but with the more reliable drivetrain. My only criticism is they aren’t built as nice as the 7 series or the RS3 even. It’s a low margin car and bmw saves money by using plastic and steel vs aluminum. All better than a brz though.

An F22 M240 is absolutely a better car than an 86 or Miata. The only people telling you otherwise are crabs in a bucket types or they've just never owned a German car and think they all explode the millisecond they come off warranty. The only two downsides of the F22 are the dead steering feel and the purposely gimped air conditioning (no sync or dedicated off button for the fans). Also, dealerships don't want to service the car long term, so they won't touch the ZF8 or diff/transfer case fluid because they're considered (((lifetime))) so you'll have to do those yourself or take them to an indie.

I have m140i xdrive and it's great for daily use, handling was a bit of an issue, you have to get better shocks (I got b12 bilstein pro kit) and change bush in a steering rack (bmw sells the updated one)

I would honestly buy an 86, but the twins are expensive & used ones are trashed in the US while m240i’s are relatively cheap. I owned an m235i, have driven an 86, and here are my thoughts:>modern BMWs have SHIT steering. They intentionally eliminated virtually all steering feel on these cars, and it’s the #1 reason I sold mine. It’s just awful. 86 was much better, but still EPS>2 series interior quality is budget tier, so is the 86>m240i is much heavier and also very front heavy. You will notice this in the mountains but not so much on the streets.>LSD: the m240i often lacks an LSD and it’s a $3-4k option to get one>rats will eat the wiring harnesses (“eco friendly plastic”) on your BMW>maintenance of course will be more expensive on the BMW>clutch delay valve on the BMW is annoying (cheap to fix)Pros of the BMW:>much more horsepower>better brand cachet>(can also be a con) flywheel is super heavy so it’s easy to drive in bumper to bumper traffic.The real comparison is manual 228i vs the 86. The 228i is more fun to drive than the 6-cylinder because it’s much lighter but still has a good amount of horsepower. Unfortunately the 230i is auto-only.

Its the early 13-16 FRS/BRZs that are getting clapped or have weak engines. $15-20k can also get you a facelift (17-21) 86/BRZ which has one of the easiest engine swaps on the planet (2.4 FA24 from GR86 drops right in with a $200 jumper harness, literally zero effort probably the easiest engine swap you can do on a 2010+ car for a extra +40whp). 13-16 has different electronics/sensors that take a lot more work to adapt (see gears and gasoline video about swapping a FA24 into a blown up FRS)
actually OP, I know I just shit on the steering, but there is a manual 230i for only $12k on autotrader. I’d seriously consider this. A similar (1st gen) 86 is $10k. That’s easily a 100hp improvement for $2,000 (+LSD cost) and the 4-cyl BMW isn’t as compromised when it comes to driving dynamics as the heavier versions (the I6 literally hangs way past the front struts. it’s terrible).
