tire c*ckscount your fucking dayshttps://www.techspot.com/news/112423-robot-changes-tires-faster-than-any-mechanic-without.html
>>28949651good riddance, tires dont pay shit and everyone drives a truck now so no point in doing it.
based, these blue collar peoples always get so uppity>go to mechanic>tell him im a software engineer>"So uh do you do nothing all day? is ai gonna take over?"kek looks like AIs going to take YOUR job and YOU will be doing nothing all day
>>28949656>go to mechanic>tell him im a software engineer>So uh do you do nothing all day?based mechanic ripping off and humiliating wrenchelts
Literally everyone is fucked. This isn't just another technology, it's gonna be rapid and violent job loss for everyone and no we will not get UBI, we'll just starve.
>>28949651How much does it cost to pay a tech to replace 4 tires with existing equipment, and how much does that machine cost?
>>28949651>only 2% chance it'll scuff and chip your rim
>without removing the wheelWho fucking thought this was a good idea, a software engineer?
>>28949692More like 20% on a good day.
>>28949651nice, tirefags always take way too long
>>28949654trucks dont take tires?
>>28949651what about the balancing part...i feel like it would be easier to make a robot that takes off the wheel and then operates the mounting+balancing machines would be easier than trying to make a robot that just mounts a tire still on the car
>>28949656You'll still get charged $200 to pay for the gay robot.
>>28949651The fuck is a tire cock?
>>28950115When you're a homo with an expanded urethra from too much sounding
>>28949651>cost of mexican $12/hour>cost of robot $1.2million plus annual $300k maintenance contract
>>28949690You're under estimating the cost of employing people. It's a lot more than the wage you pay them. If they can reduce a trained workforce down to a fast machine with one unskilled minder then it's worth it over time. And you can bet the manufacturers will offer discounts and other schemes to get the machines in the door. Once they're in service there is no going back to the old way. Little shops still use bubble balancers, sure, but all the big chains will want this kind of thing.
>>28950193Once implemented a history will be built which will then be used to determine whether long term maintenance is worth replacing a human. Sure, humans here in the US are costly but there's a reason some of the poorest parts of the world still use humans and that's because a human can undercut a machine to an unfair degree
>>28949651>new tool makes a task easiercool, that's literally why tools were invented and we've been doing it since before we had words>call it a robotNOW YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR
>>28949656>>tell him im a software engineery?
>>28950193>wages>payroll>workers comp insurance>PTO
>>28949651not everything is ai, fucking indians
Again, who thought that a tire change without removing the wheel is a good idea? That's going to fuck up everything from the forces involved. It's all so tiresome.
>>28950218Better to tell them right off the bat that they are unable to do anything.Fancy way of saying "I'm useless".
>>28949651Nice, I hate changing tiresBut Canadian companies are way too yiddish to invest in good equipment, 50 years from now they'll still be piping in jeets to do it
>>28949651Great, changing tires is expensive
>>28949797>wheel is already mounted on a spinning hub>add a roller to actually spin it>measure the vibrations with the camera (look up motion amplification, it's an interesting field)>balance it based on thatit should be possible
>>28949651Is nobody going to mention itt that mechanics rarely change tires? That's for the just out of high school gs tech to do. I haven't changed a tire in at least 3 years except on my own vehicles.
>>28949787There's no point in doing tires wrenchlet. Truck tires pay the same as little cuckbox tires and the average NPC doesn't deserve to be driving.
>>28949651Anyone who has had to change tires on a TUBELESS setup knows this has always been a job for the machines. This articles is so incredibly retarded because for the past 2? 3? decades? Tire changes have been performed by machines.>>28949797>>28950365Is /o/ just filled with zero experience anons? HEY GUYS. PLEASE FUCKING LISTEN.SHOPS HAVE BEEN USING MACHINES TO REPLACE AND BALANCE WHEELS SINCE LIKE 1980s? 70s?IT'S A BIG MACHINE IN THE SHOP, in ANY shop.If you have ever genuinely tried to mount a tubeless tire to a rim yourself with levers and windex, you should know the tech at work here.I am so confused how this is a thread when it has been a thing for 50 years.
>>28950379Is nobody going to mention the fact that user-grade tires have degraded in quality and now tires last shorter periods of time than they used to create large demand?
>>28950183No way they're paying that much for a tire monkey.
>>28950193Still way cheaper to import pindus to do it
>>28950386Maybe in the US this is the case, but in truck shops and car shops in Cringeada they're literally all still using tire bars and soapy water like it's 1913
>>28950435No fucking way. What actual 3rd world are these shops working in?
>>28949651>robot-changes-tires-faster-than-any-mechanicI wonder how it would approach a vehicle with reverse offset wheels? As the tire mounts from the rear, it'd be fucked.
>>28949651>tire c*cks>count your fucking daysOkay.I'm betting we have around 18,000 days before that contrivance is actually in semi-common use.
>>28949656>im a software engineer>kek looks like AIs going to take YOUR jobAnd dirty pajeets are going to take yours, unless you ARE a dirty pajeet. In which case you're relatively safe.... are you a dirty pajeet?...
>>28949656Keyphrase: you still went to a mechanic.
>>28950381I'VE GOT MY NUTS IN YOUR MOM
>>28950193Especially if they can run around the clock
>>28950481no habla espanol, pablito
>>28949797Last time I had tires replaced they simply didn't balance them at all and I had to come back a week later. That's a 50% miss rate for me on new tire balancing. I'd take the risk of slightly worse balancing versus no balancing any day.
>>28949656>So uh do you do nothing all day? is ai gonna take over?>maybe, maybe not. in any case, it's a gravy train of a job :^)>now who's gonna fit these 325/25s on?
>>28949678A lot can happen between job loss and starvation.Invest in my guillotine startup.
>>28949651No shop outside of California is going to spend $5000 a month on a tire changing machine when the lube tech they pay $3,000 a month for can be told to go do it with the tools already present in the shop.as well as changing oil, fetching parts for the skilled techs, porting cars, etc.
>>28950963I've never seen a tire shop with the sort of through-volume that'd justify having these run nonstop.
I am once again not letting retards work on my car, whether they're retarded robots or retarded beaners.
>>28949690>The company plans to lease out Smartbay to dealerships, tire shops, and service centers for $4,900 per monthAnd they say 1 tech can run 3 bays with less than 1/2 the cycle time. So let's say 1 machine vs 2 employees. FT employee making $20/hr (will vary by market) is $3,200/wk base wages (6,400 for the pair.) Add $400 for payroll taxes (thanks FDR) and another $4500 for healthcare, hoping hwy don't have any expensive conditions or smoke, and you're north of $11k/month. So the machine is less than half. If it works as they claim and they can protect the patent it could be a big moneymaker.
>>28951026this is the worst attempt at math i've seen on reddit in a while
>>28950390>to create large demandthat's probably a side bonus. it was done to appease the hippies. tyres used to take something like 20 gallons of oil to make one tyre. now it's 5 gallons.
>>28951026Anon, your math is way off. Also, automation constantly breaks. I work with automated machines every single day & those pieces of shit are constantly doing dumb crap. All automation has to be babysat.Automation also requires a bunch of maintenance mechanics.Only retards think an automated machine replaces everyone.
>>28951026>>28951029>>28951124If 3 men can change 2 tires in 4 hours, how long does it take 6 men to change 5 tires?
>>28951011You change your own tires? I know how to, but I'd rather not.
>>28949734someone who's tried to remove one of my wheels (you gotta drive em with the lugs not on all the way and shake the steering to get em off)
>>28951140If chuck could chuck how many would Sneed?
>>28951251a chuck would sneed all the feeds he could seed if a chuck could feed and seed
>>28949651Cool, can it balance it too?
>>28951300>>28949797according to the news article, it can balance them too. >After the new tire is mounted, SmartBay performs ATI's trademarked Real Force Balance. Chalofsky says the technology balances "the entire wheel-end assembly, including all of the rotating components in the wheel well," instead of only balancing the tire by itself. He says the result is "the most complete and accurate balance available on the market today."https://www.foxnews.com/tech/ai-robot-changes-tires-balances
>>28951304Does it just pour a bag of balance beeds in and call it good?
>>28951305I am curious about that too. It shows it on the website. The weights are cut to size from a large flat bar that already has glue on one side.https://ati-inc.co/
>>28949656Mechanics will be rare in the future, not because of AI, but EVs. I worked for a company that went into having EV models and they had to hire techs that worked on them as mechanics had no idea about anything, and their entire job was just plugging in a computer and doing everything in software to the EVs. The only manual labor thing that ever came up on them was washer fluid or tires, nothing else. Mechanics will end up being computer guys in a few decades.
>>28951314Do evs magically not blow through suspension, brakes, steering and other shit due to neglected owners like every other car? + Who's gonna change those batteries?
