I'm deep inside the gas tank of my E32 750il and the sender reserve light contacts don't work. The tank is filled to the brim with rust (expected). I pulled the sender out and the resistance for the level sensor checks out. The reserve light sensor however is open even when the float hits the bottom of the central shaft. I found on inspection that there's a plate with the contacts on it that's come lose from the top phenolic float bob, along with a washer and a smaller plastic ring. I'm pretty sure that they're supposed to be affixed to the float bob, but I'm not sure how they are stacked. Nor am I sure on how to reattach this bit. Would it be reasonable to simply use fuel resistant glue on the float and glue it back to the float bob?

that would work. can also use marine-tex epoxy, not cheap but for a job you probably never want to do again may be worthwhile, especially since judging by a forum post of a guy that compared various epoxies, the marine tex was the only one that held up to being immersed in fuel constantly.

Gemini advised NOT to use any type of adhesive here, but rather to "mechanically" attach the stack.
On these older Bosch/VDO tube-style senders, the reserve light mechanism operates independently of the main level-sensing resistance wires.

The Stack:
top to bottom (relative to the float bob)

The Phenolic Float Bob
The Plastic Ring: Acts as an insulator and spacer to ensure the metal washer doesn't short out against the float body or seat incorrectly.
The Contact Plate/Washer: The actual conductive element that bridges the terminal pins at the bottom of the assembly.
Retaining Element: Originally, these were usually heat-staked (melted plastic tabs) or held by a tiny press-fit lip.

You do understand how said systems operate, don't you?
Cite the errors, either factual or logical.

I'll wait.

ai will just scrape any info it finds that it deems relevant. i find that you can get somewhat better results if you make it larp as an expert or something like that. i still do the whole 'trust, but verify' thing though.

Why?
Ive pulled tanks from multiple 60s domestics and didnt have rust.

I had a Suzuki where the tank completely rusted through

probably vented directly to atmosphere and not filled up

Ethanol based fuel pulls water into tanks.

I just pulled a tank from a '68 F100 because it had water in it.
Was impossible to pump out every last drop but easy as shit to pull it and just pour out the remainder.
I stuck my anal probe camera down inside the interior and it still has the (im guessing factory epoxy coating?) and not a single speck of rust.
It has a vent cap that pulls atmosphere that just hangs out in the rain (pic).

Ill hypothesize that manufacturers saw the potential for issues with my example and took protective precautions whereas modern designers concluded that a more sealed and protected system wouldn't need an "unnecessary" coating.
I'll also note the minimal amount of rust on the steel filler neck after 58 years of service. It is present in areas not covered by the photo so its not stainless or aluminum. But that just shows once again that the designers/engineers opted for a corrosion-reaistant material in a known problem area.

>TL:DR
Modern vehicles are absolute shit.
Designed by committee and bean counters that worship the dollar and have forgotten their pledge to provide value to the customer.

They just used better steel.
I have a west german Mercedes-Benz that has had exposed metal on the body for at least 5 years and it's barely rusted. That's with driving it on salted roads.
Some cars go from scratch to hole in less than 5 years

You're a fuckin retard.
The "stack" is held together mechanically, from the factory.
The AI nailed that aspect
You're probably the idiot that suggested to introduce adhesive contaminates.

fag

>exposed metal
probably galvanised or something? yuro marques seem to have very good corrosion/rust mitigation practices.
>>
>>28953569
I wasn't going to get into this because "fuel resistant" just made me hang my head in shame. Like I feel personally responsible for allowing a generation to be so fucking clueless as to physics or chemistry or just being able to understand the difference between the definition of "resistant" and "proof".

Imagine this guy is your armorer in the apocalypse and he hands you a "bullet resistant" vest.
Like.
Just.
Fuck dude.
This is our future.
>>
>>28953573
No I don't think it's galvanized, just high quality non-communist steel
>>
>>28953616
wouldn't be surprised if they spec'd a grade of steel with great corrosion resistance. back then a luxury car also meant good engineering that lasted.

They're pretty good cars when they're not neglected.
Mechanically the V12 itself is nigh unkillable due to how simple it is in design.
Electronics are probably their downfall, but if you can keep the sparkle fairies in the boxes happy, the V12 will get you far
