I went to the junkyard today, and got a couple of goodies. A second pair of rear caliper brackets to split up the middle and have a drift brake. >>28983423Happened to me in my 90's Cadillac last April. The cooling fan threw a bearing and ate the rad on my way home. I barely saw the temp move before it dumped two gallons of coolant on the side of the road. I got lucky and had the digital "Hot coolant" warning to know to pull over immediately. It was a fucking brand new radiator too since the old one was leaking and I replaced it in February. Fucking nuts.Oh, and in March the alternator bracket bolt sheared on my old vette so the accessory belt ate through the upper radiator hose on the way to work. That was fun to fix in the parking lot. It did make me replace all my rubber after that. Then the galley plug started leaking on the carb. I love that old bitch but I wish the previous owners had taken better care of her. >>28984228Edsel was on the highway and iirc blew a tire which took out the fuel line going from the tank to the frame rail which ignited off the exhaust and engulfed it before he had a chance to even try to fight it.
>>28984228>>28984246Yeah, I hit a peice of scrap on the highway and the fuel line coming from the tank nearby got torn out when the tire blew. Take the time to make sure your fuel lines are sheilded, lol, apparently I'm slow and have to learn my lessons the hard way. When I pulled over and got out there was already a puddle of gas on fire under the tank and I had just filled up. Everything happens for a reason. If I still had that car, I probably wouldn't have bought the bus, so bright side to everything I guess. Still miss that thing though and Im devistated it got destroyed, it was a sick car. Bus swap is going well! Just getting measurements for all the parts I have to order, can't just look in a catalog. The swap is going to be more challenging than expected since the new engine has the intake and supercharger on the opposite side from my old engine, which is less than ideal for the packaging in my bus. And the rear motor mounts on the new engine are really different, so I'll need to build some risers to make it work. I don't think it will be too challenging though, other than wrestling around a motor that weighs 2,500lbs.
>>28984228I got a new wagon to fill the hole in my heart left by the edsel. It's not quite a "classic," but it's pretending to be.
About to use this special wrench to take some seat bolts out.
I made a fuel tank vent line today. There was a failure almost every step of the way, and it was such a simple thing. >return line fitting snapped off into the tank>stainless line split when flairing>my line isn't bent anywhere near where I wantedBUT it will work. I also started work on setting up the sending unit for a return line, but I realized that a bulkhead fitting would probably work better just like it would have for the vent.
my uncle has a 83 corvette behind his house he'll let me have it if i fix it up. how hard would this be to do? im afraid its really rusty from sitting and being from up north
>>28984246>>28984342oooh shit i remember that. RIP>>28984535not gonna go with nicopp? expensive, but i think cheaper than stainless, never rusts and much, much easier to bend. just note that if you use one of those on-vehicle flaring tools, you need to make sure the tube isn't actually at the alignment mark/touching the alignment/stopper bolt. pull it back ~2mm from that, depending on how well the bubble flare turns out. regular zinc-coated steel lines won't have this problem.
>>28983434where did you even find this? why would you even want a bus?
>>28984357Does it have a cleveland?
>>28984588You're totally right on the stainless. I was going to use it for tigging the return line into the sending unit flange thing, but I think I'm going to try a bulkhead fitting first. I figured I would test it out with something non-critical or pressurized. It actually wasn't too bad to bend, and I did it out of the car. I have one of those bench top eastwood knock off flaring tools, but I was using one of the hand ones. Thanks for the tip; I was actually wondering how far it should protrude before flairing.I have some nicopp for when I actually do my fuel lines and brakes. It definitely didn't need the stainless, but I wanted some practice.
>>28984612>I was going to use it for tigging the return line into the sending unit flange thingYou could probably get away with JB welding a barb onto it to stick a rubber hose on.
>>28984620I thought about that too. If the bulkhead fitting doesn't seal, I'll probably do that. Sometimes, I overthink and complicate things. I'm going to be using an EFI pressure pump, and I just wanted to do AN lines all the way. But the return line has much lower pressure, right? Also, when bending up fuel lines, do you start at one end and work your way to the other end point? Should I straighten the whole coil of nicopp first?
>>28983819lol and it finally clicked for me what you meant by that. no, mine was me replacing a hose on the main fuel line going from the sender to the engine and touching, but not bothering with the rest because yeah they were old but they're still holding up (lol)>5 pm, home time>head out to parking lot>smell fuel emanating from my car, like an invisible aura>deeply goncerned, look underneath>massive puddle of fuel dripping from the tank, fml>the fuel actually ate away at the asphalt layer, there was a little pit/hole in the ground the size of my pinky where the fuel was directly dripping on to>leak is at the fuel sender gasket, fuuuuuuck>can't fill up tank more than halfway for about a week or so until new gasket arrives>also noticed one of the vent hoses was leaking as wellguarantee you me touching them disturbed their natural balance. thankfully taking off the sender lock ring was way easier than i thought it'd be and it's all good now.I do want to get a fuel filter with vapor return and plumb a return line into the tank though. should make hot starts easier.>>28984629Ahh right, an EFI return line will have minimal pressure, probably no more than a few psi, but any nicopp line (and EFI rated hose) will easily cope with it.I've never done fuel lines, but when I did my brake lines I straightened whatever length of tube I needed before bending it to shape.
>>28984648Roger that. Thanks, bro.
>>28984594someone's gotta pick up the busriders
yay, new aluminium rad, no more overheating on the highwayhad to drill extra holes for the upper bolts and extend the notches for the lower ones, but otherwise it works great>>28984661np and good luck. if you want the nicopp lines to look very nice, use a pair of tube straightening pliers. The roller style tube straighteners don't make it completely straight, just straight enough for you to be able to work with it better. The pliers would be a finishing touch sort of thing if you just want to make it look great like in your initial pic.
>>28984703I seem to be having the opposite issue. Cold case 2 row with 2 1400 cfm fans in the nova. Idled it for 20ish minutes and it slowly crept up to 204. I timed it with my phone it was around 22 minutes and some change. Both fans were on. I have an external trans cooler that’s the same length and width as the radiator (obviously just skinny though) and no in-radiator cooler so I suspect the problem is inadequate airflow at idle because of the restriction from the cooler. My buddies tell me not to worry about it, since at cruise the temps going to drop but it’s still on the back of my mind. If did take it for a short drive after shutting it down for 20 minutes though and the temp was around 190 and holding but I don’t wanna be worried about getting stuck in traffic every time I drive this car
>>28984841do you have a fan shroud? that might improve things.mind you back then, it was considered normal for it to get a bit warmer at idle, the manual said to just shift to neutral and rev the engine a bit to get the fan spinning. But since you have electric fans that probably won't work so it may be worth using a shroud if not already present. I know chrysler cars with AC would have a shroud due to the condenser, it was needed so the fan could suck air through both the rad and condenser at lower speeds, but with non AC cars they didn't bother. Also what's the AFR on your engine at idle? If it's running lean it could be getting too hot.Pic related is the gauge I have in my car, I've no idea what the markings are other than the very bottom being cold, and very top being overheating. But the gauge will stay just above the very bottom when I'm pegged at 70 on the highway, and when I'm in stopped traffic for a really long time, it never seems to get above the next mark. Once the car gets moving, it dips right back down to just above cold although the heater core still seems to put out good heat.
>>28985026Yes it’s got a shroud, pic related. I’d have to check the idle AFR when I get home I don’t remember what I have it set to. I had this exact setup in my Camaro but with a Mishimoto radiator and a pair of fans and shroud off a 4th gen firebird from the junkyard and it never got above like 195-200. Buuuuut that was also a bigger engine bay, a smaller trans cooler in front of the radiator, and smaller headers with ceramic coating. Novas a little smaller and tighter and has full length headers
>>28985044Forgot to add in also not entirely certain it’s really a problem, everything I’ve read online states that temp is pretty normal at idle heat soak I guess I was just spoiled with my Camaro which was cold blooded.
>>28985045yeah probably just old car things. people used to freak out at the temp gauge moving like that so manufacturers just made the needle not move unless it got seriously hot.

>>28986007In-radiator suck because if it gets a leak and water gets into your transmission it will dissolve the glue that holds the friction material to the plates. But if its sized appropriately for the application then there is no performance difference. You see remote coolers for "towing packages" because its cheaper than building a seperate fuckhuge radiator (which may not even fit with the constraints in modern engine bay designs).A seperate cooler is better but theres nothing "wrong" with a shared system.
>>28986018I had a couple cheap shit radiators pop and give me the forbidden strawberry milkshake lol. Not on my cars thank god but yes in tech school they basically told us ethylene glycol eats the friction material right off the clutch packs pretty crazy I saw the aftermath on a Benz I worked on once they looked just like the steel disks
>>28986049I learned this in high school and have gone with multiple people to check out cars they wanted to buy- pulled the trans dipstick, saw rust around the top and just grabbed their arm and took them to the car and left.If theres a leak in the trans cooler coil within the radiator reservoir the pressurized coolant is forced into the trans line. Once in the transmission it boils off and the steam migrates to the highest point- the dipstick tube. Then cools and condenses, on raw steel that was never intenelded to see water so it rusts.
>>28986086I think it was the Lincoln guy a few years ago who had like the freak misfortune of a coolant leak that would wick its way straight into his trans dipstick or something like that it was a real shitty situation that would’ve driven me crazy. My supercharger intake had a leak at the coolant crossover that was dripping into the lifter valley too but the machine shop was able to close it up. Seemed like a factory defect and probably cost me my first motor
>>28986049oh boy...mine is a cheap-ish chinese one lol. paid about 140 bucks for it >>28984703i guess time will tell if the cooler gets compromised. maybe that's the only way to kill a 727.
>>28986092it was 2 separate leaks. the dual cooler rad was swapping fluids and once that was fixed, the thermostat housing leaked backwards under the intake, into the transmission dipstick tube hole.good timesthe only reason the transmission survived was because it has bronze clutch materialcar was running well and no reason to go under the hood. don't even remember how i noticed the 2nd leak now

Behold. I modified the sending unit adding a return line where the vent used to be. In a previous post, I added a vent line to the filler neck. Hopefully this seals properly. I tried to flare the output line, but there wasn't enough space to flare it with the nut on. I'll just have to flare it and have a short segment of hose.

>>28989808you could just bubble flare the line to form a barb for a hose, then use clamps to hold it down. i remember my old camry had about 3 inches of efi hose from the fuel filter to the fuel rails, and it was just held down with two spring clamps. seems like that was enough to keep the pressure of 65 psi from the fuel pump.

It was like $200 all in for paint.>fucking expensive, but probably not in comparison to bus partsI've found that the price of bus parts varies astronomically. Parts bin stuff like the brake drum assemblies, wheels, and engine stuff can be shockingly cheap. I bought brand new brake drums all around for something ridiculous like $100 apiece. The brake shoes were also brand new from fleetpride for like $30 apiece. Insanely cheap for the massive amount of metal there, even cheaper than brakes on my normal vehicles. But odd stuff like the old rotochamber brake actuators, torsion bars, shuttle valves, power steering components, etc. are so expensive that you're generally better off retrofitting parts that are more common. And then the body parts that are Flxible exclusive are nonexistent and you're stuck fabricating them yourself. It all seems to even out. >>28996760oops i should clarify i wasn't actually gonna do it myself - my mate's helping me and i know exactly what it sounds like, but he's been fucking around with engines a lot, lot longer than i have and definitely has ported heads before so i'm letting him do it if i decide to go that route. for now it's just gonna be a "wait-and-see" approach. once i see the heads in person i'll decide if i'm happy with what it already has or decide the porting could be better. mind you i have particularly low standards so it's likely i'm gonna go the former.if we did port we weren't gonna do anything wild, just a nip and a tuck so to speak with dr dremel. dunno if that counts as porting though.
>>28996779Them just pick heads with the flow you need "as cast" and do a port match & polish.Majority of gains on custom buulds are just from Port matching.
>>28996829Got it, thanks. That actually reminds me i definitely gotta port match, the exhaust manifold gasket was perfectly lined up on the head but then against the manifold it was blocking off like 5mm at the bottom edges of the ports...i know casting processes weren't as good back then as they are now but still...damn.
>>28996854Yep.Thats where the powers at.I've seen 50hp gains from nothing more than port matching. But ive also seen some weird shit where people have called me a liar to my face and then they think about it and go "ya, that makes sense..."Ever seen those lame ricer "ground kits" that are a giant octopus of 2ga wire from a massive battery ground terminal to seemingly random spots all over the engine bay?7hp on the dyno (on a WRX STI, your results may vary)Not even joking. Why do they actually fucking work?! (Not on all cars).Because they provide a superior ground plane for modern vehicles that have sensors everywhere that even detect your farts so when the narrow band O2 tells the ecu it sees 0.28v it's actually 0.28v and not 0.29v so the injectors get the proper pulse width (which is also more precise now).
This is all I see everytime I come across this thread in the catalog btw.
>>28996870>Ever seen those lame ricer "ground kits" that are a giant octopus of 2ga wire from a massive battery ground terminal to seemingly random spots all over the engine bay?not till i just looked it up after reading this. that's actually pretty nuts, would never think about it improving power gains in such a roundabout way.

>>29000421I used to want them for my 79 Camaro, still kind of curious for my nova since it’s the same powertrain since it’s basically my Camaro wearing a nova skin
>>29000547Why not use a 700r4?
>>29000972>700r4?Not GhostAnon but the 700R's biggest issue in high hp applications is the deep 3.06:1 First gear. Most American automatics have something in the 2.46 range. All that torque multiplication makes launches more problematic but also the wider rpm drop from First to Second is also problematic in the it can drop the rpm out of the power range of a performance engine and doing so even briefly can cost a race (not that I expect GhostAnon does much, given probable age). Then there's the various durability issues the 700 has presented those trying to use them in high hp applications that aren't readily solved. No, the hydraulic 4 speed automatic that GA should want if going that route is the 200-4R. It's been used for decades by the Grand National crowd so its strengths and weaknesses are well known and will survive in 11 second Regals for a couple of seasons in mostly stock form (plastic thrust washer MUST go if it still has one). Their main failure mode presents as an rpm flare going into Third due to insufficient apply pressure allowing clutch slip and resulting wear over time at WOT. One work-around is to run high internal pressures, which works but results in firm, un-Buick-like shifts (can actually make a steel driveshaft ring like a bell on downshifts), and the other is modifying for pressure feed on two channels known a Dual-Feed Direct.
>>29001014Pretty much hit the nail on the head, plus TV cable geometry and adjustment with the supercharger, and I just took everything out of my Camaro and reused it anyways.

>>29001732i think it's throttle valve
>>29001742trottle valve in the throttle? or the transmission? what exactly does it do? other than burn up your transmission when it fails
>>29001732>>29001762Pretty much just burns up your transmission if you don’t have it setup right. Just off the top of my head it’s a cable, kind of like the kickdown mechanism on the th350, but it also like sets like pressures and whatnot inside the transmission. If it’s not right you can burn up the clutches in a short drive like under 10miles. I had to do a Lokar pedal, cut to fit cable, and bracket just to get my throttle geometry correct with the supercharger and efi, and that’s just a simple cable. I wouldn’t want to fuck with a 700r4 TV cable especially given the 700s shitty gear layout and glass durability. Might as well just run a couple wires and do like a 4l80 or keep my streetfighter
>>29001762TV cable on a gearbox governs line pressure. you don't want too much and you don't want too little, because sooner or later they both end up with the same outcome more or less.
>>29001762As previously noted, TV stands for Throttle Valve and it refers to the throttle which is a valve to allow more or less air, or air/fuel mix if carbureted, into the engine. A TV cable allows for a more accurate indexing of the transmission internal pressures against engine output than the once-common vacuum modulator. Chrysler used a TV Linkage for decades before GM and Ford got around to using TV cables. Having proper internal transmission pressure is important for having appropriately timed shifts with enough pressure to perform that shift in good time. Pressure too low will result in an early and soft shift where the clutches slip too much and burn up due to the heat generated.
>>29001797adding to what that other anon said, pretty much every OEM set the shift points so it'd be a balance between smooth shifts and transmission longevity. You can often adjust it so that it shifts quicker - it feels harsher to the people inside, but it's actually better for the gearbox - to an extent - because it means the clutches spend less time slipping. On a lot of 90s toyotas you can tighten up all the slack in the TV cable to do exactly this.
wowee. reading up on mopar 383 engines the deck clearance varied a lot, "sometimes up to 0.30 inch" so I went to measure mine...it's 0.1 inch kek. With a generous assumption that the stock heads are 75cc, that's a compression ratio of 8.6...realistically it's probably anywhere between 84-90cc, so it's probably closer to 7.6 to 8 lol.Would it be worth milling the new heads I'm getting to bump up compression to something like 9.0, or will the increase in airflow alone make that not worthwhile?
>>29001859Where the fuck are you reading that claims a deck height variance of more than a quarter inch?!Thats straight up bullshit.Intake manifold wouldnt even bolt up.
>>29001949deck clearance, as in the distance between the top of the piston at TDC and the deck of the block. apparently chrysler big blocks could vary wildly and mine just so happened to be 0.1 inch...
mine is the same base for Bigfoot #10i think all the OBS Ford trucks get Classic status because all were Bigfoots
>>29001949>of more than a quarter inchoops. I meant 0.03 inch my bad. And mine was 0.1 inch...but mine wouldn't be the first to have that much distance apparently.
>>29001859>.1 down the bore>head gasket will just make it worseThat'll make for terrible quench characteristics and it'll likely be as sensitive to detonation as a 351M which has the same issue. Ideally you'd get new pistons that have a compression height that gets them poking a thousandth or two above deck with a head chamber size to get you where you want static compression to be and using a cam to get the dynamic compression to something that'll run on pump gas.As for milling the heads, I'm not a fan but you do you. Remember that taking off enough can force you into having the intake milled so the fucking thing will seal. It can also affect pushrod length but I expect you'll need new ones anyway.
>>29002052i was looking at the steel shim gaskets that are 0.018-0.02 thick compressed to keep the compression low, but i'm not sure how they'll cope with aluminium heads and iron block since they expand at different rates.I figured the quench was already meh enough with the stock iron heads, so it couldn't really get any worse with the new ones, especially since the ones i'm looking at have closed chambers while mine are open.Definitely keeping the whole milling intake thing into account too. At this point I'm not sure whether I want to mill the heads. I might just slap them on and use it, then if I'm still not happy I'll just tear down the block and get new pistons. Engine probably needs a rebuild anyway but I miss driving the car already.
>>29002052Deck clearance is a result of piston and connecting rod combinations.Thos pistons and rods would have the same measurements in any block.Modifying the heads to compensate for the part of the engine thats replaced with a rebuild is the dumbest shit ive ever heard of.>read others have had as much as 0.03" variance >mine is 0.1"Highly doubtful.Youre measuring wrong.

>>29002229>Thos pistons and rods would have the same measurements in any block.>Thos pistons...would have the same measurementsI want you to think about what you're saying here before I respond
>>29002506That particular set of pistons and rods, as they were machined and finished, will have the same deck clearance regardless of what 383 block theyre installed in.The blocks are machined to exacting tolerances.Different piston configurations from both OEM suppliers and aftermarket have various installed clearances due to application. If engine block A has 0.03" clearance and engine block B has 0.1" clearance, swapping the rotating assembly from one block to the other will result in block A having 0.1" clearance and block B having.0.03".No machine shop is going to take a fucking tenth of an inch off a block. Order the right God damn pistons next time.
>>29002521This. I’ll take what is “stack height” for 1000$ please Alex
>>29002229>Youre measuring wrong.i got a vernier caliper and measured the #3 piston at TDC since that was the one already near the top of the block, it definitely was 0.1 inch. I even thought I might've gotten something wrong so i measured it three times and rotated the crank back and forth three times to make sure that piston really was at top dead center.Later today I'll take a measurement from the #1 piston to make sure it isn't just something fucked with that particular piston.
>>29002632Then you ordered some smog era pistons with 7.5:1 compression and the forums are talking about performamce 9.5:1 pistons.Or something along those lines.Youre talking about compomemts that are machined to within 0.005" with performamce parts within 0.002"

>>29002521>That particular set of pistons and rods, as they were machined and finished, will have the same deck clearance regardless of what 383 block theyre installed in.Answering now.Who said anything about keeping that particular set of pistons and changing blocks?>Ideally you'd get new pistons that have a compression height...I believe the post that you clearly didn't read, yet couldn't wait to pull "akshually..." on, specifically states new pistons with a different compression height and at no point does it mention a different block. I'll admit I thought you were going to go for "all 383 pistons are the same compression height" but you somehow managed to make it even worse. Now that I think about it, you clearly won't read this either so I'm out.
>>29002681Interesting. I love my TCI th350 it’s good, even with the harsher shifts and the case saver I mean who cares, it’s not a Cadillac. I’ll have to keep that in mind. Although I guess now with my full garage and tools under one roof it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pursue a manual swap

>>29002746Dude.I responded to a post that was literally "the internet says my clearance is extreme, so should I deck the FUCKING BLOCK because CURRENT PISTONS"I tried to make it very clear that YOU DONT CUT A FUCKING BLOCK DOWN because of the slugs that are currently in it.You NEVER cut down a V8 block. Its not a head.If its warped, its fucked.I dont know which points you dont understand here. You seem.to be missing information, not me.
>>29002866>I responded to a post that was literally "the internet says my clearance is extreme, so should I deck the FUCKING BLOCK because CURRENT PISTONS">I tried to make it very clear that YOU DONT CUT A FUCKING BLOCK DOWN because of the slugs that are currently in it.for what it's worth, i never said i wanted to mill the block, only the heads. and the only real reason i was even thinking of doing that was because there's no 63cc heads available for mopar big blocks.
>>29002871>for what it's worth, i never said i wanted to mill the block, only the headsAlright thats on me.I want to blame the alcohol but honestly I think my brain was just in WTF mode and couldnt understand any of it because youre talking about grinding aftermarket aluminum heads (for a fucking 383, not some SBC) to compensate for some 60 yearold slugs in a low compression farm truck because you have some "off readings" according to billybob1776 on MoParIsLife.com Yep.Thats it.Thats where my brain snapped. I apologize.I went on a "you dumbfuck....." bender.I have collected myself, realized my mistakes and will try to guide you in the right direction now.
>>29003008>I want to blame the alcohol but honestly I think my brain was just in WTF modekek i've been there before.really i was just blindly hoping i could squeeze a bit more power while still keeping it running on 87 octane. it's not gonna be some crazy tyre shredding build, it'll be a street car first, as i was and still want to keep dailying it. But i figured since i need replacement heads anyway, why not do X and Y while i'm at it etc.The initial goal was to mill the new 75cc heads to get 0.75 to 1 point more compression (getting it to around 9.2, maybe less) since the bottom end was otherwise ok. But now i'm not so sure since i'd need likely need to do other shit like shimming the rocker shafts or getting new pushrods if too much head material was cut.
At what point do you scrap the notion of keeping stock sacred on an old car?I ask because I will be getting an old mini soon that's heavily rusted and has a shoddy paintjob. Not only that, but it has an aftermarket highflow intake and I think it might have been rebored too because of how much louder the engine is compared to the same models online during revs. I am considering whether to make it a project car and do some body mods like a flip up bumper fiberglass shell and potentially some forced induction for the engine like a twincharged setup. Because of the rust I know I am likely going to need to replace the subframe anyway even if I don't fuck with anything else, but if I am doing that I might as well just shill out some extra cash for an aftermarket ti-tube frame instead of an OEM replacement that will rust in the long run. I am getting it for free and I am not too bothered about it being a potential money pit in either case.
>>29003239>At what point do you scrap the notion of keeping stock sacred on an old car?Depends on the car. If it has tons of history and is still in decent running shape all these years later without any meaningful changes from factory, then it seems a shame to deviate from what it has been it's entire life, but if it's a fucking rotbox that no one has cared about, or a car that has already been modified at some point in it's life, then why wax lyrical about keeping it stock? Especially if half the car needs to be rebuilt anyway, why not just do what you want with it? That being said, all the things you're doing give me major soon™ vibes, so without knowing who you are and what you are capable of, just keep in mind that you should try and keep things within the scope of your abilities and time.>stock car that drives > modified car on jack stands
>>29003239look into vmaxscart kits if you want to do something sillyalso you dont want a mini just give it to me instead I will make good use of it :)
>>29003025You dont permanently modify a set of $2,500 heads (that will last a lifetime) to compensate for $400 consumable components (pistons).
how do I clean up a set of turbine wheels? There are so many narrow spokes that it's taking forever to try to scotchbrite by hand. If I could find a narrow spinning brush attachment I think that could help but I don't know where to find one.
>>29004520yeah the more i think about it, i'm just gonna leave the compression alone. turns out you gain fuck all raising the compression and the bulk of the extra power simply comes from the better airflow of modern heads. Plus port/gasket matching.

Welllll mixed feelings about my novas cooling system. I parked it and let it idle for almost 35 minutes engine temp slowly crept up to around 224. Engine bay is smaller than the Camaro and it has long tube headers so more trapped radiant heat. I also don’t have an in-radiator atf cooler and have a full size atf air cooler that’s in front of the radiator. Like an AC condenser basically. I feel like ditching this would probably bring down my idle temps a solid 10-15 degrees, but my radiator doesn’t have an in-tank cooler because I wanted to keep the system isolated. I shut it down a few minutes and when I fired it up it was 205. A quick spin around the the block brought it down to 193. So I feel like this is a idle airflow problem and nothing else but I’ve fucked my self into a corner because now my options are smaller trans air cooler and potentially not have enough trans cooling, or get a different radiator with a in tank cooler which is gonna be like 440$ or so but then I’ll also have atf heat load in my radiator and that might just put me back where I’m at now.I guess part me basically just has to decide whether im fine with my engine temp around 220 at full worst case scenario 40 minute heat soak.
>>29005848A properly functioning cooling system can sit in a traffic jam in Vegas during the summer when its 112° without issue. And no, this isnt normal even for vintage vehicles.Theres many things that get overlooked-like rusted out impeller blades that arent pushing enough coolant
>>29005917I’m sure it’s this huge atf cooler it’s a tube/fin dealio and it’s 2 rows
>>29005928Doubtful.I have intercooler, trans cooler, supercharger cooler and AC condenser in front of my radiator.Theres something else.Your symptoms are that of coolant flow issues. When did you have the water pump and thermostat off last?
>>29005848Is the fan ducted. the fact that it's not overheating while moving seems to me the fan is just not adequate in some way.
>>29005848>parked it and let it idle for almost 35 minutes engine temp slowly crept up to around 224.did you just fill it?they will get air pockets in them if they aren't bled good and hot air don't open a thermostat.
>>29005968Nope it’s been filled and ran a bunch of times the last couple weeks.>>29005959Got the fan shroud it came with pic related >>29005940Well my biggest sign is that I had this exact engine transmission and everything in my Camaro and it never got above 195 at idle. The second fan comes on at 195. It used to just sit there fine in traffic cycling the second fan off and on every 10 minutes or so. Also that Camaro had a mishimoto OEM style aluminum radiator and a a pair of fans and shroud from a 4th gen firebird that I put behind the radiator with shroud and all and zip tied in place. It wasn’t like factory OEM sealed or anything. I just took some measurements of the atf cooler it’s slightly over 1.5” thick, the tubes are .40” in diameter and it’s two rows. It’s the same length/height as the entire radiator core so it’s blocking the entire front of the radiator from fresh air flow. It’s not flush though it’s mounted on brackets it’s maybe 1.5” away near the bottom and .75” away at the top. It’s slanted.
>>29005987Here’s a picture of the atf cooler. It’s the entire length/height of my radiator core and 1.55” thick. Tubes are .40” thick
>>29005995The only way its the atf cooler is if its swollen and blocking airflow.Every car with AC has the condenser core in front of the radiator so thats literally billions of cars without issues.Fox body mustanga dont overheat and look at where they pull air from.
>>29006022I agree with you there. Every Porsche I’ve worked on have never had an issue nor any other OEM. I do have to wonder though just how much extra pre-heat it’s adding to air the fans are trying to pull through the radiator because it’s probably holding something like 3 quarts of hot atf. I’m not educated enough to guess about the difference in heat load between thick liquid hot atf and heated vaporized refrigerant hopefully someone can chime in. My gut tells me all that hot ATF is putting a massive load and preheating/restricting the air but I’ve been wrong before. For all I know refrigerant is way worse. It is an aftermarket atf cooler presumably the previous owner put on though and I found A LOT wrong with what the PO did on the car.As far as like the impeller blades and stuff goes, like I mentioned I never had an issue prior to doing the power train swap onto this car and the temp creep at idle has been present since day zero. My other thought is that those factory fans from that 4th gen firebird were also probably REALLY fuckin good because they’re not just random performance catalog stuff and actually engineered for that restrictive engine bay and whatnot in the 4th gen
Time for some experimenting
>>29006075So far after about 17 minutes of idling it’s sitting at 189. It came up to 190 twice and the second fan came on and kicked it back down. Second fan has just stayed on now because I doubt it gonna get down below like 185 or whatever again. It’s gonna stay in dual fan mode continuously which is fine by me
>>2900609840 minutes of idling it hit 204
>>29006119All right gents well that squares it. Air restriction was fuckin me. Out of curiosity I let the hood open a couple minutes to let some of that stagnant air out and thermos dropped to 189. So I see so good vents in my near future
>>29006130Holy fuck that’s what I get for being a cock sucking phone poster. Idling about 55 minutes now. with the hood open it drops all the way down to 186. hood closed it sits around 205 happily. So I’m probably gonna install a pair of 12x5”hood louvers to have an easier escape path for the trapped hot air and that should land me square around the 195-200 range.
>>29005995Lmao wut that things Xboxhyuuge that’s the lack of air at idle right there guaranteed>>29006022Ac condensor is not 3 inches thick and full of 6 quarts boiling dexron that things a heat battery
>>29006335Without a remote cooler the transmission would be plumbed directly into the radiator and all of that "boiling dexron" would transferring heat directly to the coolant.>>29006146I still think youre going down the wrong path.Youre trying to find alternate methods of removing heat because the coolant system is not functioning properly.Youre either not pushing enough coolant or not pushing enough air.If you have this setup:>>29005987Then throw that shit in the dumpster. Its only pulling air through half the radiator for starters.Youre only masking the issue with your modifications. You basically put a bucket on the floor to catch water from a leaking roof instead of fixing the hole in the roof.
>>29006608U have no idea what your talking about lol guy just proved you wrong right above movin that second radiator dropped his temps 40 degrees at idle n he said it gets down to the 190s at cruise so clearly it’s coolin adequately and pushing coolant it’s an airflow restriction problem at idle also water cools much better than air so the atf cooler in the radiator is way less load than that big ass heater coil stop replying like u know anything
>>29006608Let me get this straight, you don’t know how a fan shroud works and you’re giving advice?
>>29006639He only proved that his cooling system is maxed out and hes barely keeping his shit from blowing a head gasket.Because theres still a fault.A proper cooling system will find an equilibrium with the thermostat. If the temp ever "climbs", theres a major fucking issue. I have big blocks that ive dragged a car trailer over the Rockies with that never flinched past 195.Because I have a fucking 195 thermostat. If he hits 205 at any point then his cooling system isnt functioning properly.>>29006642A shroud wont do jack fucking dick if the fans are mounted to the radiator your mouth breathing retard.
>>29006674Just proved your a retard lol
>>29005793None so farIts rained for like a week straight lolAlthough there is a gasket between the bracket and the car sheet metal
>>29006682If you think anything in my post is false then you need to take some automotive night classes at you local community College because you dont understand the most basic fundamentals.
>>29006146>with the hood open it drops all the way down to 186. hood closed it sits around 205Stop and think about this for 5 fucking minutes before you blow your engine.Thats idling in the shade under no load.Pic related has an air cooled, 1,791 cu.in. twin turbo V12.Youre venting off excess heat like a VW beetle that your cooling system can't even adequately remove at idle.Youre either running a 185 thermostat or no thermostat. Either way if you can hit 186 while running then you should ALWAYS be at 186.What are you going to do when youre stuck in traffic on a hot day? When you seize your engine and pull it apart to see what happened I dare you to be man enough to post that rotted out water pump and admit you fucked up because you thought you knew everything.
>>29006786My guy you don’t know anything your talking about at all you don’t even know what a fan shroud is
>>29006888Fan shroud for electric fans attached directly to the radiator core?
>>29006913Theyre clearly attached to the shroud
>>29006674>A proper cooling system will find an equilibrium with the thermostat.that's not true, where did you hear that?lots of vehicles have a 195 thermostat and reach 205 as an operating temp.you should sit down and shut the fuck up, because vehicles are designed to operate 10-15 degrees above the thermostats opening temp. WHICH IS JUST THAT - THE TEMP IN WHICH THE COOLANT BEGINS TO FLOW TO THE RAD.there's no such thing as an "equilibrium" with a thermostat, so you need to unlearn what you've accepted as fact.
>>29006919My cock clearly attaches to your mother
>>29006674i think the shroud is spaced so that the fans aren't sitting right up against the radiator. then it can form the low pressure zone needed to make it easier for air to flow through.the best set up is a viscous clutch fan with a shroud that covers half the blade depth.
>>29006022WOW SO AN OEM DESIGNED CAR WITH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND YEARS OF R&D BEHAVES DIFFERENT THAN A RANDOM GARAGE BUILD WITH A SUPERCHARGED HIGH CUBE SMALL BLOCK TRIPLING THE HORSEPOWER AND HEAT OUTPUT THE CAR WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR?!?!?! NO WAY?!?!
>>29006932>there's no such thing as an "equilibrium" with a thermostatJust kill yourself now.Your genetics should not be carried on to future generations for the good of humanity.
