I don't come here often. What would stop me from sourcing parts for a Jeep, building it completely from scratch, and registering it to my local DMV?

I have some close family friends who are Jeep specialists. They own a scrapyard full of Jeeps and have a full family business with 3 generations working there centered around repairing, scrapping, and generally restoring Jeeps. Not a single fucking person in that family (9 total people are involved in the business) owns a single Jeep. Why? Because this family makes a fuckload of money off of people who do own Jeeps due to how unreliable they are. The grandfather explained it to me once. He told me that Jeeps are offroad toys built only to last as long as the brake pads last. Once they start getting over 50k miles, everything starts breaking. There is nothing stopping you from beggining this journey of yours, but understand that a Jeep is not a work-and-back vehicle. Think of it more like a disposable dirt bike or ATV. If you agree to this manufacturer's terms that it is a fun vehicle, not a reliable one, then I hope you have a fantastic time on your project!

You'd still have to vin swap or register it as a kit car, which has some specific EPA requirements.

An Autopian writer recently did that with a WW2 Jeep, made almost entirely from new parts
Apparently it's not worth the cost (both parts and logistics), restoring an existing Jeep will always be easier and cheaper, no matter how little is left. Let alone all the registration issues

Here's a video because I know you can't read

You need a title.

Is this copypasta? I hope you don't actually believe this boomer lore idiocy lmfao

My father-in-law is a Jeep mechanic. It is difficult to get his attention in a nice Jeep because he is lost in wonder. We were in a Jeep together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to build it today. I will never forget his answer… 'We can’t, we don’t know how to do it.'

Jesus fucking Christ dude.
I mean.....
I talk shit in Jeep threads about them being light duty and "it was a Jeep thing, but all that shit broke".
Bur you went full scorched earth....

You keep the VIN of whatever frame you use. You can even order a new nice shiny one and rivet it on yourself, or just make it look riveted.

Not a copypasta. Yes, I believe it. I am not an expert on Jeeps, so I would believe the words of someone who has been working on them for decades and built 3 generations of family on Jeep owner's money. Fun vehicles? Absolutely. Moneymakers for Jeep repair companies? Absolutely.

Just passing along what I was told. I do think OP should 100% do it though. Sounds like an incredibly fun project! Building something like that from the ground up is something I have always wanted to do, but never had the money to do it.

First, I'd check with your states DMV - it would probably be a new VIN and registered as a kit-car, or some shit.

Frankly, the easiest way is to buy an absolutely beat-to-shit jeep, for scrap price. All you need is the title and a chunk of the firewall where the VIN is and you are legally replacing everything else. No fucking around with the DMV, no hassle, no worrying about whether someones gonna find out that you just took the VIN tag and riveted it onto the new body.

Did you just finish jerking off or are you coming off of some sort of manic episode?

I can have 2 opinions. One is Jeeps suck. Two is building a car from scratch sounds fun. If OP builds one from scratch, then they will be very knoledgeable on how to repair it when it breaks.

Yeah guys. He is off his meds

Funny you say that
I broke my hand at work today and am high as shit on hydrocodone right now. I was stone cold sober before a few hours ago though.
