Whenever we take hauls for smaller firms it's always a gamble wherever it'll be the biggest bullshit imaginable or the coolest trip ever. This time I somehow end up at a village near the French-Italian border in some absolutely stunning section of the Alps sitting at the table in the bar with the French family owning the place (me not speaking a word of French) and their dog, eating chocolate cornettos and drinking coffee for free while they get their equipment ready for the unloading. I rate bretty good/10.

>>
>>28991740
You can only run 70 hours in an 8-day period, in the U.S., so you're implying that they're having you use up your hours before you can start running on recaps.
>>
>>28991802

>>
>>28991513

>>
>>28991740
They lied. Happens all the time in this industry. Never work anywhere until you've talked to several if not at least half a dozen of their drivers and at least some of them have showed you paystubs, mileage logs, and preferably also their 401k accounts. I did that before getting on with my new company and I'll likely be here until I retire in 30 years.
>>
>>28991592
I don't post video of a goddamn thing and I just pull off the highway for a few minutes until ricky retardo is gone rather than let the intrusive thoughts win and turn them into mulch. Three quarters of anyone in a vehicle of any type on a public roadway is so fucking stupid they should be sold into slavery. That includes me some days.
>>
>>28991740
Why don't you want to take a 34? I mean, I get it that you're not making money when you're not rolling but taking breaks can be beneficial for your health, but working for less than 8 hours a day sounds unproductive.
>>
>>28993418
Running recaps fucking sucks ass. You can only do 8.5 hours a day with at most a 15 minute extension so you have to shit and get the entire time you're driving and any kind of heavy traffic or accident will fuck you. It really only works consistently if you're running overnight and even though you do get more time off every day not getting a weekend ever will eventually fuck with you mentally which is why up in Canada you have to take their version of a 34 every two weeks if you're running recaps. Unless you're in a truck that can do 70 minimum on the cruise it's going to be real fuckin hard to make recaps work especially if your company isn't chill about speeding.
>>
>>28993929
ive managed to use recaps without ever taking a 34 for the first like 5 months at least of driving a truck. the only time i needed to use a 34 strategically was when i fucked up and didnt look at how little the next day was going to give me, then i had to get repowered

You don't make anything your first year and you'll never make anything with a starter company. That's just how it works. I do basic bitch dryvan and clear six figures because I'm not in my first year and I'm not at a starter company.

Keep your record clean, prove you're not a retard or a bitch, then go somewhere better.
>>
>>28997097
If I'm at the limiter on the cruise I'm making 43.50$ an hour. Doing basic dryvan. In my second year. If I was doing reefer it would be more like 45$ an hour. You can make good money in trucking you just can't be a retard and being a retard includes whining about low pay in your first year or staying at a starter company past your first year. It also includes almost anyone that is a lease-op outside of very specific conditions.

>company eld gps vehicle profile is set to 53 feet
Someone is getting their anus resized over this on Monday
>>
>>29000456
So, create your own vehicle profile.
Copilot isn't that difficult to figure out.
>>
>>29000684
Or... don't – I just realized I'm still locked to the two vehicle profiles after the v11.2 update.
>>
>>29000688
Yep. Company has to be the one that changes it by updating the profiles for the entire fleet, I can't make a custom one, and routing a 74-76 foot combination vehicle through routes meant for stuff up to 53 feet long is how you get into situations that require a wrecker if the driver isn't paying attention. I get the mistake though, whoever set it up thought "oh yeah the trailer is 53 feet long" without realizing the gps has no friggin idea what the length of the truck pulling the trailer is so it just thinks your overall length is 53 feet.
>>
File: IMG_2561.jpg (156 KB, 1206x1420)
156 KB JPG
>>29000754
To be fair, Copilot has the dimension set for trailer length, not overall length.

I have learned to triangulate the position of the sun over the course of the day so that I can park in a way where it doesn't hit my cabin.
>>
>>29000768
Well then it's lying because it tried to route me down a road that had an overall length limit of less than 74 feet that I would've gotten stuck on. I set that shit to 76 feet in every trucking gps I use and never have a single problem. The length of a semi and trailer when straightened out is 74-76 feet and just because it can articulate doesn't mean it can be routed down roads that have an OAL of less than 74 feet minimum. When I've run copilot on a secondary device I've had that parameter configured to 76 feet as well and it worked just fine.
>>
>>29001095
Weird. For some reason you can only configure it to be 70ft now, or at least that's what it shows if you set it to that. Seems like fucking retarded app design to me. Regardless it would've avoided the fucked up road it told me to take. I guess I'll just be trusting truckerpath from here on out.
>>
>>29001095
My Garmin is already fucking overly cautious with its routing. If I changed the shit to 76 feet it would tell me to drive to an army base so I could have my load transported by Chinook helicopter.

Any of you guys have experience with dollar general private fleet? I'm going to test for my cdl this Thursday and don't really know what to do. I was hoping to do dollar general because it seems like it pays pretty good and wont allow me to get fat. If not the private fleet than probably the dollar general account with werner. And if not werner, then probably melton. Those two, maybe 3 seem like the highest paying jobs that hire right out of school, I planned on switching to US Foods after a year.
>>
>>29003893
I don't work for them or on that account but the details I have for it are:
>solo salary $95k
>It takes approx. 6 hours to unload a full trailer.
>Loaded rolltainers can weigh upwards of 1,000 Ibs.
>Must be willing to help other Dollar Fleet
(DG, F$ or DT) or other Dedicated Accounts when freight volume dictates that
>100% Driver Unload of freight on rolltainers
>Drivers must use store provided U-Boats and empty rolltainers to stack "toppers" and downstack heavy rolltainers that will not push
>Driver must use liftgate to lower the freight to the ground
>average 3-5 stops
>1200 miles/week
>>
>>29003680
>a misty fart
careful you might summon that autist with the dodge wagon fetish
>>
>>29003919
Also, if you've seen the size of a Dollar store lot, you know how small they can be, and you'll have to drive a sleeper cab in there – you'll be better off with a shitty International or tolerable Freightliner for easier maneuvering than the premium PACCAR kings, Kenworth and Peterbilt.
Plus, with their acquisition with FirstFleet, Werner is starting to use Volvos.
>>
>>29003919
>>29003929
For the pay it sounds doable, probably not for the other dollar fleets though. Idk, I know all starter jobs suck but this one is starting to sound less good. I'll probably still stick it out if it means I get experience
>>
>>29003977
Walmart dedicated pays $20k less and it's grocery live unloads to stores, but you'll need 3 months of safe driving before you can try to get on the account, but unless you proved your dependability by doing pop up fleet during holiday seasons, getting on the account may be difficult.
>>
>>29003977
Dollar general accounts eat cdl's for breakfast. Lots are way too goddamn small and the roads and methods you have to use to reach them at the times you need to be there are frustrating as fuck at best or outright dangerous and begging for a ticket if not a preventable each time you take them at worst. I would highly recommend not starting out doing that unless you're a ultra masochistic whore for suffering and frustration.

Pulling through a parking spot takes away the opportunity to work on your backing, but if there are plenty of spaces to park at, go for it.
>>
Not a trucker, but see many around. Any advice yall have for a 4 wheeler to be safer around 18s? Aside from don't brake check and dont cut you off.
>>
>>29005911
Thats basically 80% of it. Make sure you stop at lights behind the white lines, those are there to mark our turning area. Don't tailgate, even if you save on fuel it makes us (or me at least) quite nervous if we know you're back there but can't see you. If you pass us, give us at least 4 or 5 car lengths before you come back over. Its basic courtesy stuff, but its always nice when a car gives us slow big retards the space or some other helping hand, and we appreciate it.
>>
>>29005932
I also dont want to be underneath you. I didnt think about passing and leaving a ton of space, I have not been doing that. How do I know if I am too close? If I can see your mirrors, that is good enough?
>>
>>29005970
Basically if you can see our mirrors you're good.
>>
Back before I drove a truck, I respected truck drivers. Now that I'm around you mentally challenged/limited/damaged fucks all the time, I have zero respect.

Most of you are worse drivers than 4 wheelers. The sheer amount of astonishingly stupid/dangerous/petty shit I see you retards do on a daily basis blows my fucking mind.

Got stuck behind some mongoloid in a blue car hauler on I-80 in Wyoming today weaving all over the fucking road, driving at an inconsistent speed, slowing way the fuck down for no reason, then speeding up as you try to pass him. He's functionally brain dead, but the remaining electrical signals still active in what used to be his brain still doesn't like getting passed because it's tied to losing resources in his sea urchin level consciousness. I pass him going downhill and look over, it's some miscellaneous brown asshole slumped towards the left in his seat, nearly nodding off with a cigarette burning in his hands.

Only way for me to get around this asshole was to coast downhill past him as my governed speed was low enough to where he wouldn't let me pass despite him slowing down to 60 randomly for no reason.
>>
>>29005970
>>29006045
Minor quibble here. Quite a lot of trucks now have Ai cameras which detect following distance and some safety departments insist on a minimum of a 2 second following distance and if that is violated even briefly the driver is required to do something, such as tap the brakes, to show safety that they recognized the incursion and were taking steps to mitigate it. Yes, it's dumb as hell. Yes, it adds a significant amount of stress to an already stressed driver but they don't care. So try to get out at least a couple seconds ahead before coming back over, thanks.

t. stressed driver
>>
>>29006132
Oh, and I should mentioned there can be some real stakes in it for drivers. Have a following distance violation and didn't respond? That's a coaching by your FM and Safety. And since you had to be coached you lost your Safety bonus for the quarter. You have to hit the Safety bonus before any other bonuses are allowed which means you lost your fuel bonus and profit sharing. That's $1-1.5k gone right there. Worse you have to clear an entire quarter without a violation before you can be up for bonuses in the following quarter which ups the ante to $2-3k lost that year all because 4 wheelers want to come back over half a second in front of the truck but hang out in the left lane all day any other time.
>>
>>29006117
Car haulers are regularly the most retarded drivers I see on the road, even worse than the drayage intermodal spics. I give them the same "stay the fuck away from me" treatment as Altimas.
>>
>>29006132
>>29006155
I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know. Feel free to rant at me for all the dumb shit like this, it is great to hear the other side of things. If I can ask one question though since I am here, what is up with some 18 wheelers in the right lane and passing in the middle lane at seemingly 1mph faster than the other guy? Am I missing a key piece of info as to why the left lane is the only open one sometimes? (not trying to be an asshole, just want to understand from yall's perspective)
>>
>>29005970
Two car lengths minimum. If it's heavy traffic still try to leave as much room as you can. At max gross weight even with the engine brakes cranked and good disc brakes it takes longer than you'd think for us to slowdown and if we rear end you with more than about a 15mph speed difference the odds you're dead or fucked up for life are high. Please don't chill out next to or close behind us for any longer than you have to either. I have no control over when a trailer or drive or steer tire decides to randomly let go even if I've been pretripping shit autistically and they're inflated to 90-120psi so it's like a bomb going off that throws rubber everywhere hard enough to fuck you and your shit right up.
>>
>>29006168
Not sure about others thoughts on it but for me, when you drive all day, you can feel the difference in 1mph and can make you feel lethargic. Its stupid, but true. That and staying in the middle lane avoids local merging traffic if we're just passing through.
>>
>>29006168
A lot of places you risk a ticket being in the far left lane in a semi for any longer than absolutely necessary or at all other than to avoid an accident. And retarded fucks that can't trip plan or enjoy being slaves trip plan to try and get as many miles as they possibly can in a day, to the point where running 1mph slower than they possibly can can fuck them.
>>29006132
Uh the solution is simple, don't work at that job. I don't work anywhere that mandates driver facing cameras either. My MVR is spotless and being treated like a retarded child isn't worth an extra 10k a year.
>>29006155
See above
>>29006117
4 wheelers are still worse on average but a really fucking stupid trucker can be a menace. I've called the cops on plenty of them. I chuck piss jugs out the passenger window at the engine bay of retarded faggots that think they get to park on any shoulder in the country to take a 10 just because they put out cones and popped their hood too.
>>
>>29006168
First thing to know is that most trucks are governed to 65 or 68 mph depending on the fleet. This is driven by insurance which gives price breaks for having the truck governed to whatever speed they dictate. Anyway, that limits the speed difference to about 3mph at best and a 3mph pass takes ages and seems like 1mph to outsiders. Also new drive tires on the 65mph truck and worn ones on the 68 mph truck can narrow the speed differential considerably.

Basically though most truck drivers are miserable cunts with little to no experience at driving trucks (110% turnover in the first year, still 80% in the second) and are drawn from an economic strata that's prone to toxic self-interest as the pay is way too low for what they're asking to be done.

As for the far left lane on a 3+ lane highway, as noted previously some states make it illegal for trucks to be in that left lane and as most truckers aren't familiar with every legal nuance of every state they just apply the more restrictive ones to themselves everywhere.
>>
>>29005970

>>29006189

>>
>>29006189
First year pay is way too low, true, but that's because you're insuring mostly retards that are going to fuck shit up statistically speaking way more often than not including a few that kill themselves or others that lead to settlements. Second year pay it starts getting acceptable, although it's still too low when you really understand how dangerous the job is and how much of your health it's taking from you. By the time you're five years in and have been fucked every which way you can be fucked you're smart enough to demand a fair wage or less bullshit and if you've somehow kept your mvr clean that entire time and managed to get all your endorsements in the process you can even get both.

Really though it's a job for misanthropes and cynics that can't do much of anything else because they'll end up murdering people or being really sad they can't make an entire city chimp out by saying nigger on the cb.

Short hops around 300 miles

hustle to receiver, frequently without enough time to piss.
Company insists on drivers overnighting at receiver with enough time to get a 10 in by 0600
Truck MUST be washed weekly. Drivers are hounded to get that done. You'll spend too much time sitting at the Beacon because of that. Also must still make all the other requirements for the trip
Despite that trucks are only averagely maintained. Breakdowns were common

Truck are inspected for cabin cleanliness and overall organization (straps, etc) during terminal visits.

This is bullshit that people repeat over and over like parrots. They heard it, so they lived it, and now they repeat it.

My buddy got a good paying job with only 3 months of solo experience.

Another friend went through company sponsored CDL school, got his CDL, bailed and didn't even show up for orientation, went back home and got a heavy haul job making double what he would have made at shitco mega, with ZERO experience, got his hazmat and tanker in the next few months after that, and is now going to oilfield to make bank with very little experience.

Let's face it most truck drivers are good goys who love taking it up the ass and getting paid next to nothing, it's a point of pride for them, to be the goodest goy working the hardest for the least amount of money possible.

Fucking advocate for yourself and make connections. Or don't. It's your life and your money.
>>
>>29008171
Not him but I don't complain about only making 65 cpm because despite working longer hours, my net weekly income is greater than my gross monthly income, with my job before I got into trucking. I don't have a lot of bills, and I moved back to my mom's after my friend sold his house because I saw no point in getting my own place, or a better car, if I'm only going to see it every other month.
So, while I could benefit in more mileage pay, I'm currently content with what I have.

Some people get lucky sure. Most don't. I did the year at a mega after getting my license before I jumped ship to a much better mega. I'm not opposed to going to a smaller company but I'm not doing anything but no touch dryvan ever for a variety of reasons mostly related to my health and the place I'm at you can clear six figures net after a few years doing it.

I didn't mind doing a full year with a starter mega. It sucked at times and the pay was shit but on the whole they were pretty good to me otherwise and I learned a lot. Most people get recommended to do it that way because most people aren't cut out for trucking and getting let go from swift is going to be a lot easier that getting fired and stranded from a smaller place.
>>
>>29008267
Also this. I'm clearing 13-16 hundred net a week on average after insurance, child support, and 401k contribution. That's more money than I've ever made in my fucking life for getting to jerk off and play xbox while getting paid detention and basically just holding a wheel for the most part. Why the fuck would I do twice the work for three times the risk slinging chains and straps and tarps for an extra half a grand a week take home? It's stupid. If I wanted to hump it I'd get my endorsements and go run water or sand or oil in the oilfields. I'm happy where I'm at.

I check tires before even hooking due to experience in a drop n hook yard. I try to get it to hook easy but most times it bangs in there due to various things. I check the jaws before anything else. Caught partial closures many times so I wanna know if I have to rehook before doing anything else. After checking the jaws the landing gear goes up so that I don't forget. Finally the hoses go on and they are the first to come off when dropping.

>>
>>29016717
It’s easier to stick the ass end between two tight parked trailers when the tandems are back, assuming you have all the space in front. Tandems back is like driving a longer trailer, and they respond slower to corrections than short tralers. Tandems forward and you’re going to get more movement backing for small steering inputs. Backing a little 28’ pup trailer is a pain when you’re used to 53’.
