What are you boys working on and what are you waiting on? What monkey wrench has been thrown in your lovely weekend plans?

For me, I just discovered I need new rear drum cylinders when doing the full brake job and lift on this old tracker. Thank God, Amazon delivers on Sunday.

still cleaning the underside.
went over most of it with a grinder to remove most of the rubber, now using wirewheels on angle grinder to get as close to bare metal, then i plan to sandblast it. All the underside.
but this is it for the weekend. I ran out of wirewheels so ill have to pick them up on monday after work.
also the holes were filled in with some body filler.
previous owner did a shite job of the bodywork.
Fucken hate bodywork, but my body guy said that he is only willing to do the welding part and i need to clean the underside myself or find someone else to do so. Since i couldnt find anyone who would do it without me having to ship the car across the country or without me having to gut it to the bare chassis, im stuck with the job

Just bought a car (Alfa) and I live in the salt belt. Spent like a grand on random parts to stockpile for a rainy day. Fuses, belt, coolant vent hose, sensors, grommets, grounding strap, etc. Did a full undercarriage inspection and it doesn't look like its ever been driven in snow before. Took pictures and recorded to plan out how I'm going to spray corrosion free formula 3000 around all the areas where salt can sit, sneak into, any little gaps, weep holes, etc. Brake fluid next week. Aux belt and tensioner week after that.
>>

what kind of alfa my man?

looks pretty with new coat of paint
>>
>>29018038
damn that sucks, you might try rotating the axle a bit and prying again, to rotate the C-clip that's holding the axle in. Eventually the gap will be facing downwards.
>>
>>29018052
Smart man. Last time I had to do that job, I at least had space to put a chisel on the axle and hammer directly instead of trying to pry.

Giulia quad.
Every car I've ever had, scan for any little cavity or seam like this where salt can sit, spray the fuck out of it in the summer or early fall so it stays hot and creeps upward. If I spray inside door frame weep holes, a few months later I see it staining the plastic on door handles and other interior bits, which means its working.
CF3000 doesn't warp plastics either. Had few cars when I was younger, where fluid film warped the plastic wheel well liners.

I've been doing the front end on my wife's car and its a fucking nightmare. It is literally 9 bolts per side. Im at 8 hours and still have to finish the right side. Partly my fault since I wasted quite a bit of time on the first side I did trying to get these things off instead of just going right to the angle grinder.

Everything is seized and rusted. My angle grinder has removed as many bolts as my wrench. The ball joints use a 19mm castle nut that sits right under the CV axle and you cannot get a socket on it. There isn't even room to maneuver the angle grinder in. It rounds immediately due to rust. I literally took this big of a chunk out of this fucking nut and i still had to get it to move with a screwdriver and hammer and unthread it.

I got a tie rod tool and the passenger side tie rod came right out. Driver's side is seized and the tool keeps slipping, so tomorrow I have to go and buy the other style of tool (looks kinda like a bike like) and an extension for my breaker bar to try and get it out. I knew this would take a while but hold fuck I've spent my whole weekend on it. Rust penetrant, propane torch, breaker bar, and angle grinder have been getting their moneys worth of use on this shit.

What's worse is I also need to do ball joints on my F250, which I can only imagine will be an even bigger fucking mess.
>>
>>29018660
boy am i glad i don't live in a rust area. worst i had to deal with was 50 years of caked on mud and crud on the upper control arms that i just chiseled off. all the bolts were stuck on tight but broke loose without much further trouble.
afterwards i realised i probably could've just blasted everything with the pressure washer.
>>
>>29018626
I know it doesn't look great lol, but it's a huge improvement for the $10 i spent on a set of wipes. She's 16 years old in the rust belt, she looks better than most cars her age.
>>
>>29018684
Why even do ball joints on there own? Every shitbox I've ever driven has had the ball joints pretty much integrated into the control arms. As much as it can be a pain in the ass to get them out, control arms are still usually only 3 bolts. Not trying to be condescending, I just don't have much experience with other types of vehicles.
>>
>>29018684
yeah it sucks so bad

>>29018692
on my wifes shitbox its 3 bolts to hold the ball joint to the control arm. they came without issue. much cheaper to buy just the ball joint.

ball joint to steering knuckle was a fucking mess.
>>
>>29018692
Most things a little older have the ball joints held on with regular bolts, and even where they're riveted into the control arms, after you grind out the rivets the first time and replace them with bolts, it becomes super easy to do them again. Plus, cost of new arms vs. new joints is usually like $30 vs $150.
>>
>>29018705
>ball joint to steering knuckle
That's always been the hard part for me, even with a sledgehammer and a pry bar. >>29018706
I've honestly never looked at the prices, the manuals for my last car and current one recommended just doing the whole arm since they aren't very expensive to begin with
>>
>>29018709
>even with a sledgehammer and a pry bar.
That's what a pickle fork is for.
>>
>>29018709
I guess it depends on the car, but on my wifes car, the ball joint has a small metal plate on the bottom which attaches to the control arm with two nuts and a bolt. All are 17mm and all are easily accessible. Rust penetrant and a breaker bar with a 6 sided socket got all off on both sides with no issues.

Getting the ball joint off the steering knuckle was a nightmare since the nut cannot be accessed with a socket and its torqued to fucking 96ft/lbs and had to be tore apart like my previous pic shows... but once the nut was off, like the other guy said a pickle fork (basically a wedge you hammer in) got it removed from the steering knuckle pretty easily.
>>
>>29018719
>>29018712
Pickle fork... How have I never heard of this?? Thanks anons. Will definitely get one of these next time I need to do control arms. I was essentially using a small pry bar and small sledge for this same purpose.
Somewhat related question, can driving habits influence how quickly control arms wear out?
>>
>>29018692
i was replacing all the suspenson rubbers at the time, this was just one small part of the whole thing. bushings and ball joint.
ball joint is screwed in, at first i tried a 12 ft long breaker bar and it still wouldn't get it off. i ended up taking the arms to work and one of the guys in the workshop had a 1100 ft-lb cordless impact that zipped it right off like it was nothing, that was pretty damn cool.
also i can't buy complete replacement arms easily, i'd have to pay race/performance part prices for aftermarket stuff with international shipping on top of that.
>>
>>29018726
>can driving habits influence how quickly control arms wear out?

It's basically just the joints and the bushings that wear out unless you physically strike the metal and bend it out of shape. The more weight and force you put on that stuff, the faster it wears out. For example, my land yacht needed front lower ball joints at 100k because heavy beast, and my little suzuki offroad toy has them in perfect shape at 150k because light as a feather.
>>
>>29018727
Not to mention, the metal quality on a lot of the replacement arms is garbage these days. I'll save my 1960's heavy metal if I can.
>>
>>29018730
So absolutely sending it when I'm driving my car's ass off in the twisties, that might hurt the ball joints? Say it ain't so.
>>
>>29018727
>12 ft long breaker bar
>12x multiplier cheater

Jesus Christ. I thought my four foot cheater was excessive.
>>
>>29018731
the aftermarket stuff is actually decent, tubular arms that allow for more caster than factory. but not cheap at all and overkill for my application unless i ever decide to make my barge a twogay masheen.
>>29018735
yeah, i was yanking on the motherfucker too with all my body weight and gave up when the socket slipped and i fell back on my ass. you can imagine my surprise when that rattle gun took it off like it was a toy. the threads got pretty got too...lots of work was done

I bought a pack of various sizes on Amazon for $25. Would recommend since the ball joints and tie rod ends are different sizes

I'm not sure how those claw foot things work desu. The tool I rented uses a crows foot wrench and a long pipe looking thing that seats it, with a socket insert on the end. You put the crows foot over the flats on the head of the inner tie rod, insert it into the long metal tube and put a breaker bar on the end.

For whatever reason my drivers side tie rod is so fucking tight that the tool just slips when I apply pressure. There is another style that uses pressure to clamp it, I'm going to buy one today and try it out. People also say you can use a pipe wrench but I don't think I have the clearance for that.

Was chasing an evap issue for the longest. It was leaking smoke near the gas tank. So I dropped it to inspect and found a crack on the fuel pump. Car was previously in a collision and the whole fuel pump was cracked and broken inside, but still functional.

Had to drop the driveshaft, cut the exhaust. Working in tight corners with those fuel/evap connectors. It was a pain. Welded the exhaust back with a v band clamp for easy removal in the future.

My '88 Tbird is rotted out at the frame rails. Should've checked before buying a few years back :/

The 2.3 Lima finally came out and I don't know what to do with it. I love this motor even though it's kind of a financial suicide nowadays because of the history and the fact it sounds like a tractor engine with a turbo strapped to it.

I like the fox Tbirds because of their shape, so I'd like to find a cheap roller that isn't too rotted but that's been hard. I might get desperate and find an old ranger to stick this thing into ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Personally, I was unable to get a fucking oil filter wrench on my Ranger the first time I changed the oil on it due to the orientation. I had to buy one of those claw things that fits on a socket extension to reach up there and get a good grip.

Changed the oil, transmission fluid, and rear differential fluid. Don't think the last two have ever been done and the car is at 80000 miles. The rear diff bolts were seized pretty bad, had to use a breaker bar and my whole body weight. The fluid STUNK too. Sending it off to get analyzed just because I'm curious what it'll say.

The car is driving amazing now. Not sure if it's placebo effect but the steering feels really crisp and the acceleration is smooth. I was noticing some shuddering when at high speeds before but that seems to be gone. Pretty easy to do all things considered. I replaced the front wheel hub on my mini and while i was in there found the cv axle outer boot had failed and the axle end is rusted to shit. The replacement is on the way, most of the videos I've seen show you pull the old one out and the new one goes in. put a pan under it for sure, generally if it doesn't at least drool some oil out then it was low to begin with. If you lift just the one side of the car though, you could maybe tilt the axle housing enough to keep the oil in. If it's time to change it though, might as well.

I finally had to test out the orange Milwaukee Jr’s “lifetime service agreement”. Had a 6.0Ah battery from 2019 shit out on me and give me error codes on like Wednesday of last week. Sent an email or two and told em “it’s not the charger, battery is fucked” and I had a new 6.0Ah pack at my doorstep on Saturday.

Fun part is last night I got another email from them saying “your battery has shipped” and a UPS notification saying my package will be delivered tomorrow. So I guess it’s the new “Return one, get two” warranty program on a 7+ year old power tool battery.
>>
>>29036879
Nice. I've had really good luck with Kobalt warranty over the years. It requires you to speak with a person in India though.
>>
>>29036894
The gripe I have about Ridgid is you have to register the tools within 90 days, and then half the time it sits in “Pending Approval” for 2 weeks until I send them an email saying I’m just buying DeWalt next time.

I need to see what the registration for the replacement batteries is like, but if they really sent me a 2nd one, I might just count it as a win and forget about trying to register them.

I warrantied a Ryobi battery a couple years back too, pretty sure I did that with no receipt or registration, an email or two and they had a new one in the mail.
>>
The third pressure switch manifold worked once and then died. It's been 3 weeks and the 2nd one shows no signs of getting here. Place bets it doesn't work. Should I raise the stakes to entire transmissions and see how far enshitification goes? I've priced out a couple cars I could get at that rate.
>>

Currently in the process of restoring a bastardized Rover Mini MPI back to stock after it was butchered by it's previous owner and I have ran into a snag I was wondering if any of you guys could advise me on.

I have been able to score the OEM grille the model had and now I am looking under the bonnet and pic rel is missing. In it's place is a naked K&N filter with no housing and it's not paper. Not only do I want to replace it with the stock air filter because of overall OEM restoration, but as far as I am aware naked highflow filters mounted right after the throttle body ruins perfomance as it lets in nasty debris and fucks up the volumetric efficiency royally. For some reason though beyond my understanding there are no original air intake boxes for sale anywhere, only directly mounted highflow filters or older carb filterboxes which are very different from MPI ones. So I am currently working out whether to wait until an original airbox turns up for sale (which I doubt will happen soon) or whether I should just make a cold air induction setup tuned to OEM peak RPM by making it the exact length outlined via shit like this:
https://www.exx.se/techinfo/runners/runners.html

If the latter, would it be as simple as 2 inch metal tubing and silicone elbow joints leading to a 4L box at the front of the engine bay with a hole in it or is that shit pointless?
>>

Are you in the UK? If so, go on Facebook Marketplace and type in "Rover Mini Breaking" or "Classic Mini Breaking", there are quite a few to choose from.

Doing both front hubs on the Miata. Had a bad bearing on the passenger side. Decided to go with RX-8 hubs because they weren't much more and should be able to handle more abuse. 2017 Ram 1500 with 5.7L Hemi.
Yesterday it started overheating on the way to work. I stopped and limped it home, got up to 245 before I was able to pull over and cut it off.
First thought was themostat is stuck closed. I swapped it out with a new one, did nothing. Noticed the return hose to the radiator was empty, filled the reservoir a little past max. Took it for a spin, no change.
I put it on ramps this morning looking to bleed the coolant system, I notice there is coolant sprayed all over the undercarriage. Turn it on with the heat on, can't find a drip. Not sure if it blew when it overheated the first time or what. Get back in to turn it off, guess what, the heat isn't working now. So probably low coolant. Notice again that the return hose is empty but is warmer towards the thermostat.
I am going now to get more coolant and will try to bleed it properly, is this a waste of time? I can get a water pump and replace tomorrow.

set the multimeter to read DC volts (not AC volts) then stick the positive probe on the positive terminal and vice versa, see if it's reading around 12.8V. anything lower than 12.0V is probably less than 50% charge and battery may need charging
>>
>>29041997
>>29042978
and also, if it's an auto, check that it's in neutral or park. the neutral start switch will prevent any cranking if the shifter is in any other position
>>
>>29042978
>>29043079
Lower than 12.0 and there’s a good chance the battery is fucked.

The real way to know is to do a load test. Make sure your battery is charged, like 12.6V+. Have somebody turn the key and try to start the car and watch the voltage as the starter is cranking.

If the voltage goes from 12.6V down below like 9V-10V as the car is starting, you have a charged but weak battery.
>>
>>29041997

If there's no click I wouldn't jump to a battery diag.

If auto shove the PRNDL from Park to 1 a handful of times. Try starting in P & neutral.

If that does nothing test your ignition switch.

>Do I thread them in by hand using an extension but no ratchet until I can't turn them anymore, then tighten them another two-thirds of a turn?
This is how I usually do it. If you use electric tools, then at least start them by hand before wazzing them on, then tighten them with a manual ratchet so you don't risk stripping the threads. As for how tight, it's purely a "feeling" thing and is very hard to verbally describe. 20nm is the most common number I've seen across all spark plugs and engines, and that's really not a tight as you think - just a little tweak once things stop moving by hand.

He offhandedly mentions he had some plugs lying around that look like the bigger ones, and sure enough, after checking a tool box that hasn't been in active use since the 80's or 90's, 4 of the exact fucking spark plugs I need are were sat staring up at me. Maybe I'll get into motorcycles. At least if I'm hit on a project bike, I'll just fucking die.

i know that pain all too well, although it was more my fault than anything else really. i knew it had shitty tyres so i was driving like a grandpa but it still skidded around a corner despite me going slow as fuck and it smacked into a pole, was a statutory writeoff. still mad about that one years later.
>>

>or try to save the truck
I'd personally move onto the next one, but maybe you can bring it to a frame guy and he can bend it back on the rack. If it's truly L shaped that might not even be an option.

>258k km/160k miles
>buy it OTD for 9,000 CAD/6400 USD
>looked decently clean when I took it for a test drive frame has surface rust nothing to major yet planned to just wire wheel and brush as much rust off as I could rust converter it paint it and then fluid film/pb blaster guard it
>got it home today and find a lot more rust on the body than I thought pinch welds of the truck body are a bit rusty in places, couple spots here and there in the wheel wells etc nothing major yet

Still kinda bummed thought it was a lot cleaner, but I guess for 6400 bucks I can't complain too much right? I spent a bunch of money all excited on a tonneau cover, the paint and tools to rust proof the frame, ATF fluid for a transmission drain and fill, diff fluid and stuff. Now I see the state of it and I don't even wanna touch a lot of that stuff. I'm going to just get the frame as good as I can rust proofed and painted/wheel as much rust off. Do an oil change, change the air filter, wipers and maybe change the diff fluid. The transmission fluid was flushed/changed at 150k km so the transmission fluid has 100k on it but the drain and fill procedure for this transmission is a pain in the ass and I am scared to do it.
>>
>>29051132
>drain and fill
they all work the same, unhook the top hose of the transmission heat exchanger inside the radiator, run the hose down to a gallon jug marked with lines every quart. Hook a hose and funnel to the nipple on the heat exchanger, hang it above everything because you're gravity feeding fresh fluid into it. Start the engine, watch the jug, turn the engine off at 2 quarts and then feed two quarts fresh into the funnel. Dump jug. Repeat until fresh fluid is going into the jug. You have now replaced all of your fluid with very little mixing. If you always put in what you took out, you have the same amount of fluid, but check anyways. It might have had an incorrect amount of fluid from the previous job.
>>
>>29051206

I don't want to unhook anything as this is a 12 year old truck that's been blasted with salt for 250k km as it's just gonna break or leak. Every video I see you just stick a tube through the fill hole and suck out as much fluid as you can with like a transfer pump see how much came out put the same back in turn the truck on run it through the gears let it warm up or take it for a little drive then unscrew the little inspection plug and keep adding fluid until it oozes out of that.

Anyone have hands on experience with the new Greenworks pro impacts? I want to get the 1/2in drive 560ft-lb as babbys first impact to do a brake job (plus some suspension stuff soonTM). They tested well and seem solidly built per TTC's vids but I know very little about power tools and I haven't had time to do a deep market comparison dive so maybe I'm off base there taking their word at face value. I've seen an (unverified) claim that they're too powerful for their construction and kill themselves. Is this just someone spreading FUD or a legitimate issue?

then get a welder
I assume I confused you with the last step, grinding it off is only for when you want to take it off, if ever; you'd have to grind the washer off. If you were careful you could grind the welds/washer off and leave most of the broken stud to weld another washer to. This is just the easiest dirty trick I see to turn the joint back into a fastened joint instead of the locator nub it currently is.

Buy into a cordless tool brand that has all of the tools you want for those batteries. Also buy tools from brands that will be around in a few years. There are ton of youtube guides on how to do it a lazy way with a washer, but I wouldn't risk it. Take the time to do it by hand. Get a spray detailer, some brushes, wipes, etc. Gives you some good time to inspect the engine bay and check the status of things as you clean.

Frankly any "quick and easy" guide should just insult you, its lazy and you're better than that.

>>
>>29057691
I’m sure it’s AC condensate if everything else looked good. Coolant is the only thing that isn’t oily, and you would be seeing steam or notice the color or low level. Condensate can end up weird places, add the wind from driving 200mi splashing it all around.

Whats stopping you the ball joint nut? You need to put a torch on it till its glowing orange then break it free slowly with either a long ass breaker bar (put a pipe over it too). A good trick that always works for me is to put the biggest box end you own that fits on it and use a BF hammer to whack the wrench. Alternate the heat/bar/hammer eventually it will break loose or just break

Multiple things stopped me. The ball joint nut yeah it needed heated. I don’t have a torch. For that and the seized tie rod end (got the nut off that) my dad has a torch and cut help me there. The problem now is the wheel bearing is seized in the knuckle. Even the wheel hub can’t be easily removed. YouTube showed people just hitting them out with a hammer. I bought a used knuckle from eBay and that is seized just as bad. This whole experience has been a pain in the ass.
>>
>>29017642
loose wheel bearings turned into a wheel hub replacement which turned into a cv axle replacement which turned into a ball joint replacement which turned into a transmission fluid flush which turned into a sway bar link replacement which leaves me now at an abs sensor replacement. I probably need to replace the brake rotors too.
>>
>>29063489
do you have any tools that aren't hammers?
>>
>>29063491
120k miles and probably the first time any of this stuff was done. when i did the wheel hub i noticed the axle boots failed and needed to be replaced. while doing the axle i did have to pound the shit out of the ball joint to get it free which ruined it. when i got the axle out it dumped fluid everywhere so as long as it needed to be topped up i may as well do a full replace. while i was doing that i noticed the sway bar link just dangling there since the rear mount sheared. first drive after that the abs light went off which could be a coincidence or one of both of them got damaged while i was in there. figured fuck it just replace both since the code reader won't tell me which is bad.
