the people around here are too cheap for me to do that
Wish I had the space for a vmc and a lathe. And a press…Might buy a carvera air for my cuckshed. Can at least make some aluminum fittings and stuff here and there
>>29062198Take it a step further and smelt your own steel.
OP this could have been a good thread. I can't tell if you were too obnoxious with your opening post and asked for it or you were being funny and everyone took you too seriously and started picking you apart for doing something I really think is commendable, keeping hobbyist machining alive.
>>29062198I can CNC my own stuff But it's super easy to design something and have a online CNC shop do all the work and coatings.
I want to make high quality parts at home and invest in proper equipment but it's a lot of information to process + unsure what skills should be sharpened before heavy investment. I imagine math? CAD skills, and operation experience. Would be cool as hell, but very difficult to find footing at the skill floor versus other trades. At least in my experiences.

>>29063286NTA but I've never even heard of somebody here, or on k, that likes you. Simply, you talk like a fag and your shit's all retarded. If you were competent at something you'd have a shred of respect... somewhere. And yet. We would be delighted to learn of your demise. But anyway. Boys, how should I go about making a custom intake manifold for a vtwin? I've been out of the fab game for a few years and my brain is drawing a blank. I don't want to have to buy a 3d scanner or learn CADD. Should I just buy a variety pack of pie cuts and take it slow? How would I do a half decent job the old fashioned way... what is the old fashioned way for something like that? I would prefer to make it in such a way I could put together a print so I could build more of these without a jig in the future if the scene wanted them.
>>29063486Sorry if if that pic is misleading, when I say intake manifold I mean the part between the carb and the heads.
>>29063486I worked at a custom car shop for years doing fabrication welding rust repair etc and they loved me, I’d come in any time I wanted because the work always got done they couldn’t bitch I made a custom intake for my XR500 that converted it from dual carb to single flat slide mikuni, you’ll need a welder and a drill press and a grinder and a bunch of metal
>>29063553
>>29063554
>>29063556Honda really screwed up giving these bikes 2 carbs for a single cylinder, on later ones they re designed the head for one carb but the later intake doesn’t bolt to the earlier head so I had to make one
>>29063558
>>29063559
>>29063558Holy shit what a piece of hot garbage.Looks like something made in high school shop class with flux core.
>>29063560I then TIG welded some intercooler piping to the mikuni carb to get the intake around the rear shock, it was really tight, usually there’s a large rubber boot that squeezes by the rear shock but I did aluminum tubing and massaged it into shape, the bike ran so much better with a single large flat slide
>>29063561Wym it was perfectly smooth inside and outside after sanding and shaping with a die grinder
>>29063565>I had to grind all my welds because I dont have any skillFucking tweaker.
>>29063568My welds aren’t bad? Feel free to post your welds at any time

>>29063579That’s about as good as you get welding a cast carburetor to a piece of Chinese intercooler tubing, welding cast is hard especially when it’s been soaked in gasoline and oil it’s entire life, so much junk constantly bubbling out of it, you’d know this if you welded cast a single time
>>29063582>That’s about as good as you getNo.You just dont know what youre doing.Ive been welding longer than you've been alive.

>>29063690Doesn’t look any worse than the stock one, also doesn’t look any worse than this 12v Cummins intake, it’s literally just a square box that the air flows through with no smoothing and they still make 1k+ hp
>>29063690Also, you should see how Honda welded the exhaust, this is a pic of after grinding it down, the weld literally blocks like 50% of the entire exhaust opening and the bikes still make amazing power, it’s a common mod to grind the weld down but it doesn’t even make a noticeable difference when riding

>>29063993>serviceIt installs even easier than the stock carb >replacement I can make another one in literally 5 minutes >alignment It aligns perfectly? If anything it’s acting like a heat sink and pulling heat out of the carb >warpageHow are the jets going to warp deep inside the carb? Do you even understand how a carb works kekI could hold the part after welding it, aluminum is an excellent heat sink >>29064004Tell Honda to optimize for performance when they block nearly half of the fucking exhaust ports lol >>29063732
>>29064015That's the cool thing about exhausts my little wrenchlet buddy - they don't need to be anywhere near as big or flow anywhere near as smoothly as the intake because the engine is pushing the gas out. What's the diameter on that exhaust "restriction" and how does it compare to the exhaust valve diameter?
>>29064022Damn you know what you’re right, I should just let the bike rot instead of making a new intake for it because Honda was dumb enough to use dual carbs on a single cylinder >>29064004>not optimized for performance Then why are they making 1k+ hp all day long like it’s a damn 2jz?
>>29064033There is a third option - you could just make a part that's not shit. What density of air is required for the industrial powerplant to make 1000hp?
>>29064039Except it’s actually running better than the old carb because the carb is slightly bigger and it has a pumper and a flat slide, they changed to a single carb on the later bikes for a reason As for your second question, I’ll just wait for you to answer it
>>29064046Did they make a better manifold for their single carb?
>>29064048The frame and shock are entirely different on the single carb, they offset the shock to the left to make room for a larger single carb instead of having 2 carbs that go around the centered shock, hence the awkward angle and super short length of the intake I made A few people have attempted what I’ve done, it’s either this or put the newer single carb head on but you still have to fight with the shock that’s in the way due to packaging issues
>>29064054Did they make a better manifold or not?
>>29064057Judging by that one no, it’s also flat at the back where it mates up to the head, I did put a nice radius on the ports before welding it all out
>>29064059>judging by this other custom manifold which is also shitcurious that you won't answer
>>29063729These make 20hp per litre N/A lmao

>>29064435As he said that is welding cast. It is usually full of contaminates that bubble out. He could probably do another pass over it with the tig torch to melt some of that out, but it might introduce more. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't fucking matter. It's not structural, and it produced a working part, which is more than you have ever done... Like I said I'll shit all over that faggot pleb when needed because he is an insufferable attention whore, but at least he's getting something done and somehow, some way, you are being an even bigger insufferable piece of shit than he ever has been. >>29065012That’s actually the carb welded to the air filter, the intake is on the engine side and that’s just held on with a hose clamp and small section of rubber tube

>>29066086That is what he is getting at. How is manually adjusting your spark timing any better than letting a computer adjust your ignition timing or distributor weights and vacuum advance? That and fuel trims are actually very nice "modern" upgrades in vehicles and pretending pulling a timing advance lever manually is superior is just retarded.

>>29067190I did. twice. And fun fact, bending sheet metal can create a stress concentration at the bend that makes it much more susceptible to fatigue failure after x amount of vibrations. Even if it's strong enough, it was probably going to fail on me eventually. The reservoir hangs off the bracket quite a bit and bounces around a lot, especially on track.Even the spacer Kraftwerks supplied with the reservoir failed. This is the 4th time I've fucked around with it, and every time it fails, bolts fall out while I'm driving, hence the mismatched bolt nonsense going on.I got pissed off and just made it out of a solid block of aluminum.
