>Acceptance of automatic transmissions in the United States occurred rapidly in the postwar years--the first year in which automatics were the majority of new cars sold was 1955. Since then, the peak year for manual transmission sales in the US was 1987, when 37% of cars and light trucks were equipped with them.[3]

i think it more had to do with American cars being bigger and not having as many 1.x liter fours as Europe. The fact that manual transmissions peaked in the 80s apparently was more because of the prevalence of small cars in that decade.
>>
>>29139873
you mean city driving? that's where you would not like using manual very much.
>>
even back in prewar times gearboxes were set up in such a way as to minimize shifting. usually you just put it in 1st gear for the entire trip.

is this 1982? we don't have shitty 3 speed slushboxes anymore.

This is how modern manuals work too. Enthusiast cars are dead.
>>
>>29139873
Isn't it basically the same once you've finished accelerating? Once you're in you're cruising gear you don't need to shift. I could see an automatic being useful for stop and start traffic but I always thought the problem is overblown and it really isn't that hard to drive manual in traffic.
>>
>>29139910
>This is how modern manuals work too.
You talking about that ferrari sim racing car?

the funny part is that while manuals are a minority of new car sales, they have a way higher secondary market value than automatics

in a V8 boat there would be little point to manual shift because the engine has loads of torque to overcome any automatic lag
>>

Maybe so you could actually use that torque over a large range of vehicle speeds instead of having one or two really tall (slow to accelerate) gears?

that was also true in prewar cars. they had very tall gears to minimize the amount of shifting. the average luxury boat driver did not want to shift.

People missing hands and feet cause of war need automatics.
>>
Automatics were seen as THE luxury item in cars only second to AC, so people post-war demanded them in order to keep up with the jonses. It also helped that automatics are generally easier to learn than manuals, so for a post-war country rapidly expanding it was perfect. You had both a social desire for automatics and a economic need for them
>>
>>29140070
manuals disappeared from mid-priced cars rapidly; only Chevy, Ford, etc still commonly had it by the late 50s. while it was theoretically available on Mercury, Buick, etc, through the 60s, dealers never ordered cars with manual shift and would often refuse if you tried to custom order it.
>>
>>29139966
Additionally, most manual M-B were European model I4s, the sixes were usually always automatic as well.

What car was it in? First time I drove one was in a 981 Cayman and the shifts were 100-200ms when pushing the car a bit in sport+ mode. Shifts were pretty slow in normal mode when just cruising around but that's to be expected, the software prioritizes smoothness in normal mode. Still didn't like it much. Too clinical.

M-B V8s were always pretty small compared to American ones though. The W140 offered 4.2 or 5.0L V8s and a 6.0L V12, but it was still a lot smaller than the GM 454 V8.
>>
>>29141080
yes but their engines were built to a high standard and costly while American V8s were sloppy-ass tractor engines with loose tolerances

total production figures for the W140 but these are global sales and not separated by region. S-Classes were always a rare sight anyway compared to the quite common C and E-Class. Maybe if I lived in LA or some other place with a lot of richfaggots.
>>
>>29141093
that was the last generation of S-Class where a manual transmission was available (on sixes only and not in North America)
>>
>>29141093
like with the lower ranges, you could order a European S-Class in stripper taxi trim. M-B's setup was a lot like American cars of the 70s with compact (C-Class), mid-sized (E-Class), and full-sized (S-Class) models, except that in USA they only got the top trim levels.

Auto takeover makes complete sense when you consider how a normalfag's mind works.
Most people use their computers to mess with excel spreadsheets
They also use their phones to just chat
For them, a car is a tool that takes you from A to B, nothing more. And modern autos do that the best, most optimized way. Fun be damned.

Prewar cars were geared so you could just use one gear and never shift, the cars had enough torque to just deal with it. Post war a transmission that shifted itself was seen as a luxury option. There is a reason the terms automatic vs standard were so common in the US. The manual was the standard option and the upper level car was the automatic. Marketing men and salesmen leaned into that even harder so the automatic became the more chosen config. Makes noticed and stopped investing as much into manuals until the muscle car boom where they had a resurgence. Then another resurgence during the gas crisis since a stick got better mileage than a slushbox. After that the manual resurgence has been more about driving experience than economic factors.
>>
>>29141351

I've bought 2 manuals new. On my 7th manual car. It was like pulling teeth, dealerships do not want to order manuals and will spend 5 minutes telling you how "manuals are dead" and whatever and how I need to buy an auto with a fancy interior and a $5k wheel upgrade that happens to already be on the lot.
>>
>>29141564
See >>29140102

It was not any different in the 60s. The main reason dealers get pissed if you order manual is that they're afraid you'll back out on the purchase and leave a car on the lot they can't get rid of.
>>
>>29141558
they're the performative masculinity generation, they brought back straight razors and shitty beer just to larp as an older generation that never existed. see >>29141365, only base model shitbox mustangs/camaros/chargers were sold with manuals since the autos could handle the torque better

>Automatic
-Torque converter fails at 150k miles. Now you're told you need to swap for a rebuilt transmission. Quoted cost is more than the value of the car so you scrap it and finance another car.
-DSG clutch fails at 100k miles. Similar situation. Or, if you're lucky like picrel it fails at 70k miles so you get one for free under warranty... until the next one fails.
>Manual
-Clutch fails at 125k miles as intended. You replace the clutch for $750 and keep driving.
>>
>>29141767
depends on the transmission. some are too weak to handle the engine torque because manufacturers are cheap faggots.
>>
>>29141770
For sure, there's variability.
But many cars ARE killed every year because the automatic was too costly to replace.
Slushbox torque converters are wear parts. DSG clutches are wear parts. CVTs are wear parts as a whole lol.
It's a lot cheaper to swap out a manual clutch than replace an automatic transmission. Sure, you could theoretically rebuild, but transmission shops would rather sell you something rebuilt and send yours in as a core to be rebuilt.
>>
>>29141773
>Slushbox torque converters are wear parts
