I love pipe tobacco. I used to go out with a hammock and lay in it smoking Stokkebye 24 Nougat and sipping beer or bourbon. I had a large collection of tobaccos kept in mason jars. Threw it all out when moving. Wish I hadn't. Didn't realize it would cost hundreds to replace everything. Some of the tobacco is no longer in production.

I saw a recent article that claimed 80 to 90 percent of cigarette smokers will never get lung cancer. Google AI says only 15% of cigarette smokers get lung cancer. Pipe and cigar smokers basically don't get any cancer. It's very rare. I hate the FDA so much, they made it illegal for pipe shops to make their own house blends and prevented tobacco producers from doing their annual Christmas blends. If you make any new blend it has to be studied by the FDA for safety and it costs tens of thousands of dollars.

I wouldn't recommend Captain Black, it has a chemical smell and flavor. Half and Half is really good. pipesandcigars.com is my go to for tobacco purchases because my state lost it's last pipe shop. I recommend Lane 1-Q for a vanilla flavor over Captain Black. I also recommend Cult Blood Red Moon for a strong cherry flavor. Peterson Sunset Breeze is topped with amaretto and is really good.

If you want something without a flavor topping I recommend Peterson Elizabethan Mixture. It's just straight tobacco that wont bowl you over. If you want something stronger I'd go for an English blend like Peterson Nightcap.

If you want to be adventurous you can flavor your own tobacco using liquor, you can get all kinds of flavors this way.

You’ll never get a cooler smoke. Tongue bite is impossible.
There is a slight taste imparted—slight. It’s not “pure” like meer. Though I think it’s pretty good at getting the pure flavors out like a meerschaum: I just get a slight taste of the gourd.
Obviously every pipe is different but mine lasts about as long as my Savinelli 8606.
It’s no more maintenance intensive than a meer. You’re not supposed to try to remove any buildup from the gourd part (you can damage it if you try). Just wipe the meerschaum bowl after every smoke and keep the stem clean. Also every now and then you need to wax the cork, otherwise the bowl will lose its seal with the pipe.
Ergonomics-wise it’s pretty comfy to hold. Lightweight for being so huge and very curvy. I like to hold it with two fingers at the bottom “hump” of the “U”.
Sort of impractical for being /out/doors though. It’s too precious to risk dropping.

Back when all of my friends turned 18 we went to hookah bars occasionally for a while. It was cool because it was new I guess, and something to do. I didn't really like any of the flavors though, and I'm not a fan of particularly aromatic blends because they all tend to remind me of hookah smoke, where it's basically flavored air and not really "tobacco". I think I need to stop taking Zyn. About a year ago I started taking Zyn once a day when I got off of work. I like the effect it has, but I’ve found I don’t enjoy my pipe anywhere near as much now. Nope lol. It was my favorite too, anon. I got a couple pounds of it as soon as I heard Sutliff was closing. Well, supposedly the match was just the bulk version of WhiteKnight and used slightly lower grade tobacco, but I doubt WhiteKnight still uses Sutliff tobacco, unless Russ Ouellette stalked up on Sutliff blending tobacco beforehand.

If you want something in the same genre (though 100% not the same, nor as good, as the Sobranie Match), Arango Balkan Supreme is a really good bulk Balkan blend. It’s spicier and zestier than the Sobranie Match and less sweet and smoky.

Just took the plunge and bought myself a Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman pipe, as well as a Whitluck's waxed canvas pouch. I wanted a MM Shire cobbit pipe but for some reason the shipping is insanely expensive, so I looked into more MM's pipes and decided to go with the Country Gentleman which is really similar albeit with a shorter bit and looks equally as cool.
It's my first ever pipe and I really can't wait to try it out while /out/. I don't even know shit about tobacco and its kinds since all I've ever smoked is cigarettes, but I'm excited about this really cool little gadget. Any suggestions?

If you're coming from cigarettes you should give Burleys and VaPers a try. Don't inhale pipe smoke, it's absorbed through mucus membranes in your throat, mouth, and nose if you retrohale. Try to keep a slow steady pace with your puffs, you'll only taste hot ash and quickly burn through your cob if you smoke it too fast and hot.

The go-to suggestion is Captain Black, but imo it's very aromatic to the point that personally I don't like it that much. I've been enjoying MATCH Carter Hall lately, which is very cheap, actually tastes like tobacco, and also has some little sweet chocolatey notes in it. I would say it's a pretty "standard" pipe tobacco to start on, for both a prior smoker and someone who has no experience, because if you haven't smoked before, it will give you an experience that is lightly flavored while still tasting like tobacco, and if you have smoked before, you'll get actual tobacco with a little flavor. I liked MATCH Prince Albert more, but that seems to no longer be available. Besides, that, maybe just order a few 1oz samplers if you can afford it or things that sound good or that you think you might like. I myself really like Perique and Burley, but I've been laying off the heavier blends while it's 100 degrees outside.

You should eventually try to figure out how much you like Virginia, Burley, Perique, and Latakia (and Deertongue) so that you can approximate whether or not you might like a blend based on its components.

What it tastes like really depends on the tobacco. If everything seems like its lit, you're doing it right. If everything is mostly staying lit, you're doing it right, though this can also vary depending on the tobacco. If the pipe bowl is getting warm to the touch, you're doing it right, but maybe consider slowing down; non-aromatic tobaccos, I tend to smoke a bit hot but I find that a pipe will never get as hot with a non-aromatic as it will with an aromatic, and I tend to smoke aromatics a bit cooler because if you smoke them faster everything turns into hot air rather than flavor, so you kinda need to smoke them cool, but the pipe still might get hot even while smoking them cool depending on the pipe. If you are smoking an aromatic and all you taste is "warm air", you're smoking too fast.

I've always just used a paper towel dampened with distilled water. I use a large bottle cap (Like from a milk jug) to make sure it doesn't come into direct contact with the tobacco and seal it up in the jar for a few days.

Posted in here several weeks ago about my taste buds getting burned out on dark-fired blends and occasional strong cigars over the winter. Due to the oppressive heat and work schedule (8-10 hours a day without AC) I haven't smoked anything for going on three weeks now. This seems to have reset my palate, because I'm smoking Elizabethan now and it's so nice.
I find a little break from smoking now and then during the year really helps me appreciate all my favorite blends more than ever.

In the "breath method", to put it very plainly, you basically just stick the pipe in your mouth, you do not purposely draw from the stem, and you just let your idle breathing pull smoke into your mouth, and if you do this, kinda naturally the smoke will also be pushed back out through the pipe stem (slowly, not to blow everything everywhere or upset the tobacco at all). Mechanically what is happening, and you can choose to smoke this way if you want, is that basically your tongue is acting as a diaphragm and is creating a vacuum that "smokes" the pipe for you without you needing to actually draw from the stem. You then very, very, very gently "massage" the smoke back out through the pipe, mouth closed, and you do this slowly, and this is the "breath method" or smoking. The benefits of it is that you probably wont really need to worry about relights until maybe the very end of the bowl, and also generally going this slowly allows you to taste the tobacco better.

Personally i mix a bag og captain black with nicotiana rustica ordered whole leaf mix to preferred taste. Tastes good and doubles as an insect reppelent being 9× higher in nicotene.

I've got an Italian Gepetto smooth finish briar pipe (not pic related) that I bought for my dad back in the 1980s in an effort to get him to stop smoking (didn't work) and while I like the smell and taste, pipe smoking takes too long and eventually burns my mouth.

Lately I've been cutting back on cigarettes and I'm thinking of getting a pipe. Why does a smooth Peterson cost more than my acoustic guitar? Are you just paying for the brand or is their briar wood superior?

You're paying for the name and its associated craftsmanship, aspects of the pipe (spigot, etc), the "System" pipes and the "P-lip" if it has one, the quality of the wood sure, and also the 1-year guarantee.

You can get a corncob Missouri Meerschaum for $10-15, or see if there is a pipe shop near you and get a "basket briar" there for $25-50. Basically just a no name cheapo briar. Or try to find something on ebay or at estate sales near you. The OP recommends a corncob (or a cheap briar) to new pipe smokers for a reason. Also, if you can find one either on ebay or at an estate sale, a cheap or used meerschaum (~$25-50, like a basket briar) is an option as well, but if you don't know what you're looking for, it's possible a newbie might unwittingly purchase one of those "fake" pressed meerschaum flake pipes rather than a "real" block meerschaum. A clay pipe is also another possible thing you could get for relatively cheap (~$25)

Cool! ive had mixed results when ordering "replica" lighters, i am a bit of a lighter nerd, personally i dont really give a shit about anything that takes gas, but still on some of the fluid lighters ive had issues, just gotta scout around a bit to find something that is not pure chinisium.

Orientals, for me, have offered a sort of tangy flavor, maybe going even into something like cardamom. Not smoky at all. Latakia is that typical smoky thing, which I kind of liken to a barbecue pit, though for me the taste of Latakia can veer even into something like a warm clothes dryer. Dark Fired Kentucky is another smoky flavor, which for me is more like a "campfire" type of smoky.

Latakia is not my favorite, and I did not like it at all at first, but I've sort of come around to it lately. I haven't tried many blends with it, but I do like Epiphany. The rest have been kinda meh. A nice flavor to add to the rotation. Comparatively, I liked "orientals" the first time I tried it, just like I like perique the first time I tried it. They are very different, but maybe you could consider them 2 sides of the same coin, where perique might be a more bold or harsh or peppery spicy "condiment", orientals would be softer or more mellow or a more cardamom type spicy. At least in my experience that's how its been.

My first pipe (as well as the waxed leather pipe pouch I also got) finally arrived and I'm happy to have them.
I frankly don't know jack about tobacco pipe, but I'll visit a nice tobacco shop next week where the owner supposedly is a veteran pipe smoker and has a good variety in his shop, so maybe he'll give me some good suggestions. What should I get as a first time smoker? What should I look for, and what to avoid?

I also can't wait to get this thing out on an adventure and smoke by a lake or chilling in the woods.

Secondly as far as pipe tobacco goes i'd start with one English blend and one Virginia blend, just to give yourself a baseline idea of what you enjoy. I'd suggest Peterson My Mixture 965 for the English, and maybe something like Rattray's Old Gowrie for the Virginia, but there are tons of choices and i'm sure if your local shop is run by a pipe smoker he'll get you set up.

You probably want to get an aromatic, a non aromatic (burley perique or Virginia perique, though maybe try no perique if you don't like peppery spice, I think perique is like hot sauce for tobacco), and then maybe a latakia if the smell does not immediately turn you off. You can work your way out from there. Its also worth trying something with deertongue in it at some point (natural non-tobacco plant used as a condiment sometimes, has a vanilla/mint/tea flavor)

Just a friendly reminder that most Meerschaum pipe makers don't make good smoking pipes as the makers aren't pipe smokers but just artisans who make pipes to sell because there is a market for it and their pipes usually smoke like shit. Most Meers I smoked were completely not enjoyable , the draw was off and the internals were cheaply made. The bowls weren't thick enough to withstand heat so they would smoke like cheap ceramic and clay pipes. Also don't buy African block meerschaum as African Meers are not as porous as Turkish meerschaum and dont absorb a lot of the tar and they don't color nicely and evenly, but they are more resistant to wear and tear since they are harder. Based off smoking a variety of different meers since 2012 I can conclude that you should not waste your time on no named Meers, Muhsin's , Yanik's, Hussein COR's( even tho his work is beautiful) any vintage peterson meers, vintage gmb's. The best smoking meers for me come from either IMP or Black Meerschaum with black meerschaum coming out ahead.
Also I love the design of Barling Meerschaum but unfortunately they only use African Meerschaum since Turkey banned the selling of raw Meerschaum outside the country.

I was kind of harsh on h.cor there. His pipes are top of the line quality and workmanship is top tier but from the pipe I owned from him the bowl would always get really hot even though I wasn't smoking hard and my tobacco was dry. Everything else was perfect and everyone i know who has one of his pipes loves them and didn't have the same problem as me, so ill take him out of the shit list and put him in the pass list since his pipe really had only one negative.

Wessex gold flake ( tastes like a good quality brightleaf virginia, has a lot of nicotine compared to other virginias)
Solani 633( one of the best virginias but really hard to find. Watch City Cigar just had a big drop ; )
Sam Gawith Full Virginia flake ( might not be the best for beginnners as the flake comes moist but its one of the best. Make sure to dry it out and smoke slow)
C&D Opening Night ( beautiful red virginias, Tastes bready and sweet a nice contemplative smoke)

If you're enjoying your pipe then thats great and keep with it, It's just small nitpicky things you pick up after smoking from so many different pipes over the years you tend to learn what you like more and like less. There is a certain airflow, feel, construction and materials I tend to prefer more and find that at my point in time and can't go back to the other pipes as they just don't smoke the same for me. Honestly if I stuck with my first meerschaum pipe I would have been content with it as I never experienced higher quality builds. Say for example my Canadian shaped Black meerschaum pipe I posted under my main post doesn't have the screwed in fittings that cheaper pipes have, its internals are constructed like a good briar pipe, the airflow is perfectly calibrated so my cadence while smoking is far more enjoyable than my starting pipes, the Meerschaum material is very light for such a large pipe meaning they are using top grade Meerschaum as the more dense meerschaum is of lesser grade, curing for the meerschaum material is spot on not too hard not too soft and it absorbs all moisture when I smoke and it always remains a cool smoke. Bowl never gets hot and most of all the tobacco always tastes good and never had a bad bowl. Now compare that to my Ahmet Govem meerschaum which looks nice on the exterior but internally the build was questionable ,Bowls of tobacco were not as enjoyable, If I smoked too fast it always ran hot, airflow was beyond restrictive and was just not as enjoyable. In turkey when they mine the Meerschaum they assign a grade to the meerschaum and sell it based off that grade. The difference in some pipes are drastic and I wish pipe makers would disclose what grade the meerschaum is so people knew what they are buying. There is no way in hell Black and Ahmet Govem are using the same grade of meerschaum. The density and feel of them are very different.

It's been over two years since I last smoked a pipe, due to enjoying the convenience of cigars, but I've been meaning to get back to pipes since reading this thread. I've got a bunch of tobaccos I've got jarred in my room for years now, and a tin of Mixture 652 I've yet to crack. I've regrettable had to throw out a most of my cobs because of mold that grew on them, and it was painful to realize how I neglected them. I've got a few left in pristine condition along with a cool looking briar I smoked once, in fantastic condition too. Just ordered a jar of Carter Hall. Any thoughts on best techniques? I've always over-thought the process of smoking, but maybe just stuffing a cob with some Carter and chilling is the best way to go.

if you don't yet have a lighter chosen, i absolutely recommend a Helplights Clipper shell
its easier to use than a standard lighter as they light the tobacco more reliably
they're also lower in temp too, so the tobacco burns & tastes way better
no overheating burning off excess moisture & all the nice volatiles you want, making the tobacco unevenly burnt & giving tongue bite

i'm typing this just after finishing a bowl, and midway through i ran out of wick on my lighter after a few months of using it
i can very easily tell the difference between the hemp's temperature & the butane's temperature, and the butane's has much less taste besides ash, while also feeling like i'm going to damage my cob from how hot it is

i'd also recommend getting an 8deco Bamboo tamper & a Savinelli tamper
the 8deco is dirt cheap & fits a wide variety of pipes very well, and the Savinelli has a 9mm head thats good for small pipes, also good for travel too

I used to use a zippo with the pipe insert with a cob, and I recall getting decent to good flavor out of Carter Hall, but yeah I'm sure the taste is probably different than a wick flame because the zippo fluid might change the flavor. I've already got a czech tool, and I'll check those other tampers too.

On a side note, I bought a 1.5oz tin of Frog Morton On the Town back in 2019, and I realized the date of sealing on the bottom of the tin is a faded 2017 on it. Never smoked Frog Morton's, so I'm content with what I'm missed out on.

zippos are good, but the ones that use liquid fuel dry out, and the ones that use butane don't have a very large capacity
matches are great, but if you're somewhere humid, the strike surface is gonna shit out over time (they're also not as high quality as they used to be)
gas station cheapo lighters are actually a pretty solid choice, but they're on par with just about any other butane lighter
bic lighters are good, but most aren't refillable, so they're quite wasteful

clipper lighters are the best imho though
they're actually made specifically for pipes, and increase in flow when turned upside down
they're also user serviceable too, so you can fill them up or replace the flint
i prefer the form factor, its light & fits the pocket easy

Thanks for the link anon. I've used hemp cord that I weaved into "matches" so I can light them with a lighter to use for pipes. This seems a helluva lot more convenient.

It's a very early production Universal M1 carbine. The later guns they produced have a bad rep because they were made very cheaply, and deviated significantly from the original design. The early ones are actually pretty nice and were made (Mostly) to milspec with proper forged receivers and barrels, and a lot of leftover surplus M1 carbine parts. Mine has USGI bolt, slide, rear sight, barrel band/bayonet mount, mag release/safety, and some other odds and ends.

its also been almost 2 years since i've had any alcohol at all, so its nice to savor (stopped for health reasons, gotta watch out for built up forever-chemicals damaging the liver when combined with alcohol)

eh, i barely even felt the absinthe, i used to drink a lot so i got a high tolerance
also a high metabolism too, so everything is processed really quickly, one of the reasons i don't feel much out of nicotine; so as a result, i truly do this out of taste

i actually don't know the blend, got it from a cigar shop that had some pipe stuff, its really good though
i should go back there, they didn't have much, but they would get shipments from a pipe-restorer, really good pipes at that

Finally had my first smoking session ever this morning. It was really, really nice. I followed the indications on how to fill up the pipe from the OP and was surprised how much this thing can fit in.
I even managed to keep the tobacco burning after I got the hang of it bc I had to keep lighting it over and over at the start.

I have, at different times, smoked a cob, a briar, and a meerschaum each for over 1 month consecutively, usually twice per day, and nothing bad ever happened to those pipes. I think meerschaum or clay is the "correct" answer to your question, but you can just smoke pipes and they'll be fine with it. Maybe if you're one of those old guys who has a pipe in his mouth 24/7 you maybe should rest a pipe, but for me 1 or 2 bowls per days has been fine.

Yes, that shit is strong. Not much flavor to it, the only benefit is a super high nicotine punch. Its meant to be smoked quickly, each bowl only lasts a few draws.

Peterson has two lines of 'System' pipes. The Standard and Deluxe systems. Personally I actually prefer the standards because they use traditional stems, whereas the deluxe uses what they call the 'p-lip' stem which directs the smoke upwards towards the roof of your mouth to supposedly prevent tongue bite. I have a deluxe with this stem and it's not bad, but it's not my personal preference.
Cleaning them involves an extra step over a normal pipe but it's really pretty quick. Just remove the stem and swab out the moisture chamber with a twisted up tissue/fluffy pipe cleaner/whatever you prefer.

I have a theory that those blends were named in a time when it was socially acceptable to drink constantly, so it made sense that you start the day with a lighter blend (EMP), and want something heavier in the evening when you've had a few or more (Nightcap is literally called "Nightcap")

Now it's reversed because most people only drink occasionally, but are accustomed to starting their day with something like a strong coffee, so you'll want a heavier blend to go with that.

I bought a Savinelli and I am just wondering how often I should change it.
I also have a BBB with a metal filter, I thought they were permanent as long as you clean it but I saw a 10 pack listing of metal filters and now I am thinking whether it has to be replaced.

I personally don't smoke filtered pipes.

I bought a butane pipe insert for my new zippo and while it does look nice, the damn thing can barely hold any fuel.
It takes 4 smoke sessions before it needs to be refilled.
Feels a lot less than a normal lighter.

For a while I was buying lots of cheaper estate pipes on eBay. I'd get like 5 for $15 and clean them up. Even if only one or two of them were good smokers it was worth the risk. As a side effect I have about a dozen pipes that aren't good for much except sitting on my pipe rack, but some of my good ones I got for basically nothing. I've invested in a few expensive Savinelli and Peterson pipes, but I always go back to the Georg Jensen straight briar I paid less than $30 for.

OHM tobacco or American Club are my most liked tobaccos. Ofc I like anything in a tin but you can't smoke that as much as ryo. Carter Hall is great but I've since found it to be a rather mellow experience... Meant to be smoked at a glacial pace for the full experience.
...I've been nicotine dependent for many years so if I'm not getting the vitamin n i puff back into the pipe and puff again. I've gone through periods where I smoke the same pipe all day long could go many years doing that before it goes out.so if you're feeling it's goung to damage the pipe do it and notice how the pipe reacts over the course of a few weeks, if it's soggy you gotta slow down a bit more.
Also my pipe experience got better when I stopped drinking alcohol

Not all pipes come with filters, though if you bought a cob as recommended, it probably does have a paper filter in it. Some pipes come with "stingers" which are a metal thing, and others come with nothing, no filter at all.

I smoked a jungle pipe for 2 or 3 years before ever buying a real pipe. I gave the cob 1 maiden smoke with the filter in before removing it before the next smoke. If you do not use a filter, you might get "scooby snacks" occasionally, but that's it. Don't worry about it. If you aren't cleaning your pipes at least somewhat regularly, you might also get a nasty tar loogie, especially if you smoke goopy stuff like some aromatics, but if you're cleaning your pipes you wont get that either.

If you *want* to use a filter, there are paper filters, balsawood filters, and even meerschaum filters (that I'm aware of, there could be more) that you can search for and buy. You could even just do it the ghetto way and take a business card or something and tear a section of it and turn it into a sort of "W" shape and attempt to replicate what the pipe came with that way, if you really want one but don't want to buy any.

i'll use a filter on the first smokes on a pipe, especially on a cob, since they'll leave a bunch of soot from charring
for the pipes that "need" filters, theres little fittings that just take up the space of a filter so nothing gets damaged; its just a plastic dowel the same size of a filter is all
