Tent or Car?
>>
>>2833615
Both. There are many places a car can not go.
>>
>>2833615
Covid was when you faggots decided “car camping” meant literally sleeping in your car.
>>
Neither
>>
>>2833745
Don't you get fucked up by insects?
>>
>>2833615
Car camping is good if you are just passing through somewhere. Tent camping if you are getting comfy for a few days

Tent is more comfy than a car and you can camp everywhere
>>
>>2833750
As long as you dont set right next to an anthill, nope. I accept that I have probably had spiders walk across me. I will use a tent for the height of mosquito season in the mountains though
>>
car for super long distances and when i'm in bear country (i have bear paranoia when sleeping)

tent when i want to explore areas for an extended period of time
>>
Sleeping on an actual mattress is unbeatable, as is all the luxury items like chainsaws or fresh food.
I did a 5-day car camping trip a few years back and went from a backwoods campsite all by myself to a national park and stopped by town for real food then back to camp every day. Minimal setup required. Could sit in a proper chair, shoot guns, etc.
Backpacking is nice in other ways.

Truck. I've done tent, which is ok, for years. Did wagon a few times, very comfy. Now I camp in the back of my truck. Anywhere I want to go my truck can go and it's max comfy. I can't go back to a tent anymore.
>>
>>2835928
How is the dust in the topper?
>>
>>2835929
Before I put a seal between the bed and the tailgate, it got a little dusty. With the seal between the tailgate and bed, I haven't seen any dust getting in. It runs down one side of the back of the bed, along the bottom, then up the other side. The canopy itself has its own seal that has always worked well. The only problem I've had was it leaked when I first got it when it rained. I have a rack on the top of it. A tube of calk fixed that.
>>

I've done tents and hammocks for years now. Getting tired of the setup. Moving forward, I think I'm just going to set up a cot in my truck's bed with a simple tarp over top if even needed. When you think about it, if you're driving anywhere and will be posted up near your car, why even bother setting up a tent or hammock? Keep those for when you're hiking a few miles out.
>>

and also, there's nothing like waking up in the back of Falkor (that's my nickname for my trucky truck) long after the sun has risen and it's become a Hanoi sweatbox in there. Even white fibreglass man, it can roast if you don't get those windas open
>>
>>2833747
It does when you put that tent in a car.
>>
>>2833616
Wrong. With a car, you can go wherever you want.
>>
>>2833774

>>
>>2833615
car if you can get there with car, tent if you need to hike, roof top tent if car suck to sleep in.
>>
>>2836566

>>
I've been trying to find a small that will either come off the side or back of the SUV that I can detach from and leave for the day. Or just a good tent for storage and changing in.
>>
The idea of camping out of a truck is actually making me consider buying a truck. Do any of you guys use your trucks for hauling, because I'm curious how easy / hard going back and forth between uses is, or if you have to consider one or the other.
>>
>>2833615
if I have my car with me at the campsite I don't see why I wouldn't sleep in it. I only use my tent to sleep, if I can do it in the car instead it's one less thing I need to bring there and set up
>>
>>2835621
Back of the truck is so fucking comfy in shitty weather
>>
>>2833627
why not? it's the same thing except one gives the comfort of being surrounded by 2 tons of steel and the other is some flimsy fabric that needs to be set up and packed away every night.
>>
>>2837491
oh hell yes. one night I got caught in a deluge that flooded the whole area, it was so cold out I could see my breath and the water was rising all around me. released the tarp and hoppped in the back with my beers and blankets, not another soul around and just fucking chilled away for hours with my candle lantern while the rain thundered on the roof like a waterfall. got nervous as the water ended up about halfway up my tires at one point, but it all ended well either way.
>>
I currently have a Honda CR-V. I'm debating getting a Tacoma or similar truck. I can't decide, should I get a truck, if I should get a 5ft bed or a 6 ft bed? Even though I don't transport people, should I get double cab since I carry a lot of shit with me? I definitely want a cap, and originally, I was thinking of a 6ft bed so that I could sleep in it, but since I camp so little, maybe, a 5 ft bed and a tent would suffice. Additionally, I want to be able to haul a kayak. Will a 5 ft bed with a bed extender work well?
>>
>>2833627
Car camping is for lazy people who want a compromise between the comforts of a sticks-n-bricks and the freedom of being out in nature. You don't pay to sleep, but you still get to sleep on a nice cushy bed that you can climb out of in the morning and be on your way in five minutes.
>>2835490
Other way around. There's no way you can fit a 6" mattress in a backpack, but it fits in a minivan just fine.
>>
>>2836274
That's one thing I appreciate about car camping, that it can potentially be a very comfortable bed but most of the year you're not going to oversleep because it heats up pretty quick after sunrise.
When I used to do solo cross-country road trips, there was something so comfy about stopping at a gas station that evening for a sandwich and a six-pack, then finding a rough Forest Service or BLM road to drive a few miles down and park for the night.
>>
When I road trip alone, I either rent a 4 door pickup truck, or a minivan and sleep inside.
With a car you can sleep in comfort anywhere, drive, pull over, sleep, wake up, piss out the door, and leave.

Namadgi National Park. It's lovely when the weather is nice, but in the mountains even during summer it gets feckin cold and blustery at night. 12 of hours of rain creates lots of concerns. They actually have a forced park closure in bad weather so I was supposed to have left in the afternoon but I stayed all night. The roads were almost entirely washed out but luckily in Falkor I was able to get out in the morning

>>

I tried one of those once and returned it. Feels like a gimmick: severely limits where you can put your tent, adds additional setup and breakdown time to attach it to your car, and doesn’t really add anything since you’ve either got to be set up to sleep in the car or sleep in the tent.
I’ve got a rooftop tent which is pretty comfortable and you can set it up quickly, but I used to do a lot of tent camping before I had it.

My gf squirts an attrocious amount, literally a stream, until the walls and roof are dripping squirt. The blankets are more like sponges, just to keep from sleeping in literal puddles. On a cold morning, the windows are frosted in condensed pussy juice and it's like sleeping in an eskimo womb. Kinds cozy inder the damp blankets. We've literally had icicles of frozen dripping squirt hanging from the roof like stelagmites. Have you ever eaten an icicle of frozen pussy juice in the morning? Tastes great and a nice way to stir your coffee.
>>
I don't know how to deal with the paranoia of people being able to look in my windows while I'm sleeping

Truck always with camper shell but with or without tent (>>2841576 >>2839472) depending on weather.
I got a 7th gen Hilux double cab. Means even if the tailgate is down the bed is only about 5'7" or 1.7m so I gotta keep it open when sleeping.
So when it might be raining I cover everything with a tent. I also use the tent when I camp in places where other people might be so I can shit in peace in the morning.

these must be designed by someone who think the point is to have your camp attatched to your car and thats not the case for most of us who use various car camping methods, its quick and easy set up/down in shit weather and conditions, you arrive in the evening leave in the morning. a roof top tent you are tucked in withing 3 minutes if you have to and you dont have to care about ground contitions. a van or truck topper even faster. ground tent meh needs better ground but can be done in less than 10 min, down to 5. thoose are "fuck this weather im bunkin in no mather what" conditions. no way you can do that with this setup unless your car is so big you can sleep without setting it up and then one may ask; why bring it in the first place?
>>
>>2841958
They are cuter, and for that reason women and men who are in relationships with women will continue to buy them. Same reason people buy teardrop trailers.

i want to try this once im so stuck in my own practicality, what is cute comfy camping like?

It sounds like you should stick with an SUV, maybe something with more bulk like a 4Runner (doesn't have to be this.) They're just overall better for transporting kayaks, cab space, really all of the needs you're describing. If you really needed a truck, you wouldn't be thinking twice about getting the bigger bed.

That's cool. I had a 2008 Koleos, but I didn't know they had a tent for it. I don't have that car anymore; I traded it in for a Duster, and sleeping in it is uncomfortable. So it's either a tent or nothing.

I like sleeping in the back of my truck too with my wife and dog. It's comfy waking up in the morning and just looking out over a cool view. Plus we can get to a campsite late at night after driving all day and not worry about needing to set up a tent or any of that.

>>2837418
I use my truck for work (carpenter) most of the time and then I take out all of my tools and use it for camping. For storage i have a plywood platform and then drawers that slide out. They hold my tools or they hold all the camping gear and we can sleep on top. I'll post an image in a second.

Truck with a cap actually makes a bit more sense than inside a car. Mostly because the bed of a truck gives you room to full stretch out as most are over 6 feet.
