Car camp or backpacking?
if car camping you can bring basically whatever you want, just depends on what you want to do

To be comfortablr you want a foam pad for the ground. If no tent or hammock you want a tarp for the ground too. You want a sleeping bag, quilt or blanket.
You can have a tent or tarp to put up and shelter you from rain. I'd bring one. Being soaked sucks even more than just crashing in some meadow and finiding you're full of dew in the morning.
You want a flashlight but your phone might do.
Bring toilet paper or wipes of some sort.
Bring drinking water, 2 liters maybe.
I recommend you have sleep clothes and a pair of sandals for camp.
Bring strong insect reppelent that you can apply on your skin.
That really is about it there's not much to do. Ofc if you want to eat every day bring a sandwich, if you want to read bring a book, wear appropiate clothes and shoes.
You dont NEED meme shit to sleep outside, like fire, cooking, knives, guns, maps, fompasses, survival mental illness and what not. Not in france.

i'd like to piggy back off this thread and ask for some advice for my first time camping too. me and a friend were thinking of going camping in the chiricahua mountains in mid october. average high is 74 degrees and average low is about 48. we were thinking of just sleeping in tents on sleeping bags for one night and then heading home just to see if were even cut out for this. it is an area with black bears so i was gonna bring a .357 ruger and my friend was gonna bring his 1911. i know its basically the bare minimum when it comes to protection but we arent really planning on staying long or bringing anything that would attract bears. we arent looking for the most luxurious sleep so any recommendations on cheap and dependable equipment that we will need would be appreciated. any advice or concerns or just pointing out any retardation in my plans would be greatly appreciated.

You need a hammock or a tent from amazon. That's it

You need a sleeping pad. Sleeping bags do not work for the ground. You can buy cheap blue CCF pads at walmart or whatever you have there. Stack 2-3 for those temperatures.
That is retarded enough to ruin your trip, you're welcome.
Guns are totally pointless but fun, so you do you. If you want to do plinking, make sure you have a proper backstop. I hate retards that target practice and fail to realize that their bullets hit rocks and fragment/ricochet out towards whoever is hiking nearby. Proper backstop is soft ground that's several feet higher than what you're shooting at and directly behind it, like a soil slope.

You don’t need all this crap but it’s a comprehensive list.

Do you want to drive up to a campsite or walk to it? If you haven’t done either I recommend car camping first. But if you want to backpack buy backpacking gear. That way you can test out your backpacking stuff. Then when you check off what you actually use all the time car camping, and keep it under 30 lbs you can graduate to backpacking.

Get the cheap zlite closed foam or equivalent at least for a sleeping pad. It’s a good investment and lasts forever comparatively. For discount gear try steap and cheap or gear trade for a cheap sleeping bag in the 20 degree range. Get one in that range because the # you see is for survivability not comfort usually. Now I’m older I use that and a blow up. One because it’s super comfy. 2 because my s2s etherlite is great but if I spring a leak and can’t gear tape it at least I have something. And 3 closed foam makes a good sit pad. Finally look up how to deal with black bears on YouTube. For the most part black bears are like dogs or raccoons, usually pretty use to humans and more opportunistic, so food away from camp. But they still can fuck your shit up if you meet one on a bad day.

Water. That's basically it but depending on weather and temperatures I'd also take clothing and a blanket.
>>
I will also piggy back off this thread and ask what medical stuff should be taken for backpacking? Just some bandaids and some ibuprofen or more?
